how are they 10x larger? Word Bearers were the 2nd largest legion at the heresy.(all they did was build build build, very infrequent battle.)

Nurgle/Death guard - love the look but find they feel more like a force of nature rather than evil (is a plague evil?)
Black Legion - Abbaddon seems to have failed too many times, no?
Crimson Slaughter - love the fluff in the codex, colors are a bit too bright red I find (alot like blood angels)
Word Bearers - love the fluff (dark apostle books) seem the most evil to me (cultists, sacrifices....lots of sacrifices), hate though that the dark apostle rules suck
Thousand Sunz - not too fond of the hollowed - out space marine armor or the blue look, I find blue is not an evil color...but Egyptian theme stuff is pretty cool looking. Also don't find them evil as much as tragic (from the Horus heresy stories)
World Eaters/Khorne Warbands - love the look, fluff is a bit dry though because its always kinda the same thing - murdering psychopaths - but some of the Vraks fluff is pretty cool
Emperor's Children - lots of cool fluff here, but you gotta be a fan of having a purple/pink army to likem
Alpha Legion - really cool fluff, mysterious, I find the blue/green colors a bit odd looking

Actually Crimson Slaughter are Mephiston Red, which is pretty much the default Red, kinda like Blood Ravens. The Blood Angels and World Eaters are eyesoringly Blood Red / Evil Sunz Scarlet

And the Sons of Horus were 3rd largest. There is a mass of fluff on how the Black Legion recruits/acquires new warriors. Google it if you're interested I'm not going to derail the thread. The 10x larger than Word Bearers bit actually comes from a Word Bearer novel. One of the ones with Marduk in it.

I really like the Night Lords, but unfortunately, I don't think they have any unique units to attract people to them (plus the bat wings on their heads are kind of silly).

Yeah, Konrad is my favorite Primarch but they are kind silly looking and lack anything at all unique at least Thousand sons have the Aspiring Sorcerers

Night Lords without bat wings are the best Legion, fluff-wise and aesthetically.
Alpha Legion used to be the best when they were angry, bitter snake-eating types skulking around the galaxy fomenting rebellion because they hubristically chose the wrong side in the Heresy. When they turned into the Scooby Doo Marines, their fluff was ruined and they became the worst Chaos faction.
I do like the Iron Warriors to an extent because they're somewhat no-nonsense. Black Legion can fall under that category too. 2K Sons have a fairly tragic story, but they lack a lot fo character because most of their Marines are empty suits. I like my Chaos Marines as tragic figures who really stuck with the original fluff for Chaos Marines. Being the angry, bitter remnants of a once-great force that carries on their eternal war against the Imperium because they don't have any choice and they are eternally damned. The Chaos Marines are supposed to be all about the futility of their existence, but their inability to come to terms with that. That's part of their charm.

I feel like Chaos fluff as a whole has dropped a lot in quality. Slaanesh is every awful HipHop song ever, Khorne is a lame meathead without the sense to use a fething bolter, Nurgle is.... ok well gross but that's about all he is, and GW just doesn't seem to know what to with Tzeenetch.

I dunno. I think they're shifting away, some, from the Gods-Heavy focus they had. I don't have a problem with that, myself. I think your antagonists can have more personality when they aren't overshadowed by the Gods they worship. Ahriman is a more interesting concept to me than Kharn. A schemer trying to scheme the schemer's counter scheme while scheming... uh... I forgot where I was in the grand scheme of things. Point is, that he's his own character, instead of a living embodiment of endless rage. No matter how the books try to portray him, Kharn's a mindless Khorne-like murder-beast in most people's eyes. Which is fine, I suppose, but not something that draws me in. But I am curious Raven, has anyone's input pushed you towards any Legion over the others?

Yes, but the characters need to be compelling aside from Ahriman they really aren't. I'm kinda stuck between Alpha, and Nurgle with Thousand Sons as a distant second. So I think what I'll do is play a couple proxy games with each and let the tabletop be the deciding factor.

Lulz... I can save you some time and say that Alpha / Nurgle will beat the bloody intestines out of KSons... if they had innards to spill. I misread what you wrote. Alpha would probably be the way to go. Use Huron Blackheart as "Counts-As" Alpha General, and you'll be laughing.

1K Sons/Pink Horrors Daemon Summoning Factory can be pretty wicked. I hope, and can only imagine, there's gonna be a Daemonkin book for Tzeentch, and hopefully they will throw 1K Sons a bone or two.

It's rumored to be after the Eldar release and basically the only reason I'm considering the KSons.

I am ok with that. With bikers and/or spawn (eww) Typhus zombie lists have more than enough speed. In fact, I see zombies as nearly a straight upgrade on Cultists what with free feel no pain and remaining 4ppm.

Well, if your main interest is between alpha and deathguard, I would look into renegades and heretics , i.e. IA13.
In a fluffy alpha list you easily see a population/army turned traitor, which would give you a whole second army to play with.
I suppose they would work equally well for deathguard.
Model wise, deathguard will probably look more impressive though. And they're much better represented rules wise than alpha legion. Automatically Appended Next Post: Though if tzeentch daemonkin happens and gets the eldar treatment, than just forget there are any other csm releases.
Although you're probably more likely to meet Santa.

I'm a big fan of Thousand Sons and their backstory. Also out of all the Chaos powers and their daemons I prefer Tzeentch. Game mechanics 1k Sons might not be too impressive by themselves. It's expensive in models but bring them to summon and summon and summon some more while your Inferno Bolters protect your Sorcerors then I believe the rest of the 1k stuff has to do with Tzeentch marked vehicles to round things out both fluffy and mechanically.
