Hello, so I am recently coming back into the hobby after being taunted by my past collection of units. My question is, why are there so many Codex's / Armys? When I played, you had 1 army. Now, from what I see, people play multiple different armies in conjunction? In addition, on GW's site, there are codex's for things like Harlequins and Khorne. Werent these just part of Eldar/CSM? Or are they individual armies now?

It's basically DLC. They'll purposely keep things out of a book to sell you a supplement at the same price later, or similar nonsense. or in the case of Tyranids, make the Codex garbage and sell three (albeit fairly cheap) dataslates to fix it.

Basic concept, but not entirely true. There are also more units than ever available in the game. More units require more books, though GW does tend to stretch some of the books pretty thin to make "standalone codex's".

Let's see...battle-bots, tracked-bots, HQ dude, and flail priests. So 4.

Skitarii has four different infantry selections, two different strider things, and the mecha-crab. So 7 total. I'm also being generous with the strider things, as they're functionally a weapon swap.

All together, between the two books, they can't even break 12. I get that Ad Mech is cool and all, and many are excited, but what a fething joke that is on GW's behalf. Its almost as bad as the Militarum Tempestus book.

Instead of giving us a nice new Ad mech army, they release one hardback 30 pound Ad mech book with 4 units in it every 3 months.

Bottom line: you need to spend more than what the main rulebook costs to have all the rules materials necessary to field ONE of your armies with all options available. Extreme example: Grey Knights, who got half their unit roster stripped and sold separately as digital-only now.

Also another interesting little thing OP is that some hardback codexes have a shelf life of 2 years now. Like the 2013 Codex Eldar.

Or even better - hardbacks with a shelf life of one year, like the Imperial Knights. Fun times indeed.

Not everybody will ally. My entire group will stick to one army. The only exception maybe is to include forgeworld units. We don't even consider allies. It's not a house rule, we're just not interested in doing it. Not even when playing sisters. And I've never missed allies.

I really, really wish they had just charged twice as much for the book, and made it 1 fat book with all the models together, that could be fielded together in a single detachment.

Um... let's see:

- Space Marines, Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids, Craftworld Eldar, Dark Eldar, Space Wolves, Orks, Necrons, Tau Empire, Grey Knights, Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) and Chaos Daemons -> These books contain all the rules necessary to field their titular armies.

- Militarum Tempestus: (aka Stormtroopers) Standalone Imperial Guard sub-faction. Some miniatures and rules overlap with Imperial Guard, but otherwise contains unique rules.

- Imperial Knights: Superheavy walkers-only army. A codex in its own right, Imperial Knights can also be deployed as a plug-in for Imperial armies.

- Inquisition: Formerly part of Codex: Grey Knights. Can be fielded as an independent army or as a plugin for Imperial armies.

- Adepta Sororitas: Rules for fielding Sisters of Battle. Available through digital download only.

- Khorne Daemonkin: Joint Khorne-themed CSM and Chaos Daemons army, independent of Codex: Chaos Space Marines.

- Adeptus Mechanicus: Skitarii. Part I of the AdMech faction. Provides rules and miniatures for the military branch of the Mechanicus.

- Adeptus Mechanicus: Cult Mechanicus (tba): Part II of the AdMech faction. Provides rules for the religious troops of the Adeptus.

- Sentinels of Terra, Clan Raukaan, Black Legion, Crimson Slaughter, Waaagh! Ghazghkull, Farsight Enclaves, Champions of Fenris, Haemonculus Covens: Supplements. Provide rules for themed sub-factions. Require the main Codex to play.

- Leviathan Rising (Tyranid Vanguard, Tyranid Invasion, Tyranid Onlsaught), Tau Firebase Cadre, Tyrannic War Veterans, Reclusiam Squad, The Unrelenting Hunt, Kranon's Hellguard, Helbrutes, Strike Force Ultra, Adeptus Astartes Stormwing, Khârn's Butcherhorde: Dataslates. Provide formations (groupings of units with special rules attached) for armies. Requires the main faction codex to play.

- Cypher, Be'lakor, Officio Assassinorum: Dataslates. Provide units that can be used under various armies.

- The Red Waaagh!, Hour of the Wolf, Shield of Baal: Campaign books. Narrative campaigns with missions and additional rules for two or more armies.

Yay, it's as complicated as it sounds.

You should turn away, and RUN. Don't get back into 40K. Spend some quality time with your family, read a good book, go serve food to the homeless, get a second job, go back to school... just don't get back into 40K.
