Late night trailer browsing brought me to this:

Looks interesting, if just for the visuals. Could easily just turn into a CGI porn film with crap. The screenplay was picked up by Fox a few weeks ago was written by Jim Uhls, and has been described as a mix between Dune and Moby Dick. Uhls is most known for being the screenwriter for Fight Club, but the last time he worked with Fox was on Jumper so that that how you may.

Personally I'm not looking for a Godfather-esq type of film, but at least having a competent plot and acting in between what should be absolutely breathtaking action sequences would be nice. I'd prefer this not to be another Pacific Rim where the action is the only draw.

1. My guess is "weather" (it did dive down into apparent thunderheads/thunderstorm)
2. Umm yeah... it's patented hollywood magic, all "dragons" are sentient... and that one is a greedy git, like many other dragon legends.

1. Probably because of the electrical interference from the clouds? There's a ton of lighting in the cloud things.

2. Probably.

I find it bizarre that something that big can fly in an Atmosphere that sees humans wearing very thin looking, rubberised suits.

Visuals look good but I'm not sold on the premise.

Anything up to four times normal atmospheric pressure doesn't even require decompression, anything up to seven times normal atmospheric pressure can be done with normal air, and with the right gas mixture you can do anything up to thirty-four times normal atmospheric pressure. Only beyond that pressure is a hardsuit actually essential.

You shall not speak of that abomination of a film, and that "Well they tried polite disappointing clap of a miniseries."

Now I have to try and sear the memory of that film from my mind.

If you need to harvest sky whales for FTL, how did humans get to that planet?

Looks like a perfect summer beer flick.

Consider me interested as I've also heard Simon Kinberg (X-Men) and Neill Blomkamp (District 9) are attached.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

Yup, I'm down with the pretty visuals. Plot wise I didn't see much of it, but it does say this is only a proof of concept trailer. If anything it'll look cool and yeah, that could be enough. Saying that I'd be interested in what they do with the story, even if it is just a rehash of Moby Dick (in space!). ...Just as long as they leave out that bit about making an apron out of a Wale's dick.

So... you give "involuntary labor" (which I read as "prisoners") a ship with weapons capable of taking down a sky whale that takes an explosion to the face with not a care.

Right...

Cheesy sci-fy flick held together with duct tape, handwavium, and cool visuals? I’ll put it in the netflix queue. The cost of beer at the theater would be prohibitive, but I’d probably enjoy it.

Right...

It might not, IT could very well be threats of violence against family or other forms of coercion. Maybe addiction.

Thats the rub, its not slow at all. It's moving damn fast.

"By the early 22nd century mankind had settled many worlds".

So in 100 years we need to expand into space, build massive extraplantetary infrastructure, slowboat, find space whales, kill space whales and find out they have biotech, develop the new slowboated system sufficiently in system to process space whales and research high end tech, develop FTL from the biotech, build FTYL ships, return to earth, build a whaling fleet and a colony fleet.

Emphasis in bold on those parts that are not easy to handwave away.

Not sold on the "100 years from now Mankind must send slave-labor sky-whaling fleets to harvest eggs that hold the secret to FTL travel" plot, but it looks pretty.

Funny how often in film that a thing bites human tech, usually resulting in a massive explosion inside it's mouth, but then proceeds to not give a feth.

Oh well, looks like some mindless fun, despite the inevitible greenpeace message that will be thrust into our faces at every oppertunity once we've been conned into seeing it with a fancy trailer.

Advanced sensors unnecessary. As soon as the craft stopped, I knew exactly where it was. I guess they have the disadvantage of not knowing they are in a terrible movie.

It could be they're not there for the space whales, they're just hunting them to protect other interests in the system.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Maybe the secret to FTL travel is really really reeeeeeaaaalllly high octane fuel?? and perhaps this space whale's fluids are just such a high octane fuel source

Who says they are using our calendar still? Maybe they use the Islamic Calendar. That'd give them quite a few extra centuries.
