i have done this on a few occasions....
1. huge undead army in fantasy I spent years building. I had it on display on a shelf. My roommate at the time decided he wanted that shelf for his army. So he too a carboard box and arm swept my army into it breaking practically every model. I didnt have the heart to even try to rebuild so gave it away.
2. i had piecemealed an eldar army over a year or so and was paying someone to paint it for me. When the time came to pick it up, I had to practically go to their home and get it by force. I had to resort to threats as it was. Never did get it all back and what I did get was not all painted, parts broken and the stuff that was painted was NOT in the colors I had directed and of a super poor quality. There was no way I was even going to try to fix/redo it so I sold it off at a huge loss.
3. my 40k chaos army I had spent decades building. My paint jobs werent the greatest but I had gone in a different direction with my guard and fluff and wanted to go with it instead knowing I had no plans of going back and that if I ever did, it would be fresh with all new models and paints.

This. GW went from something very close to a meaningful, solid ruleset to the hot mess of 6E and into the random driven, "do what you want", Forge Narratives Harder mess of 7E just two years of 6E while fixing almost nothing, breaking more things, and raising the price.

As a premise and setting, 40k is awesome. As a game, its terrible as is the company creating it. I sold off entirely once 7E was confirmed in content and cost save my collection of rare pieces I want to paint and my entirely converted (and now unbound) Grey Knights army.

My hope is GW tanks and a company like FFG makes rules while outsourcing model creation.

Well put.

I voted other, shelved my DA not because they were getting nerfed but because most of the newer codexes were creeping ahead in competitiveness. Whilst the SM army I was building got halted since I was unhappy how 7th edition failed to fix any real problems with 6th and I decided to look at better rulesets by different manufacturers instead.

I started getting rid of armies from 6th to 7th due to GW rules writing, 2+/++ rerollable, Imperial Knights, and forcing Apocalypse into the game.

I was down to 2 armies, my GK and my Farsight. I was waiting for GW to continue their much more balanced albeit bland codex trend. With the exception of Necron they were doing well. And then Eldar happened. There is currently a bid on ebay for my GK and I'm sorely tempted to get out of the game with entirely or just keep my Tau for Beer and Pretzels... maybe something like NOVA or a GT if they are smart with restrictions and bad crap like the Wraithknight.

I've been driven almost completely out of the game twice before after getting too disgusted by GW rules writing... then something would get me back in for a bit.... and I'd buy more.... then sell... and now I'm looking at getting completely out.

Part of me is hoping that they completely break the Tau codex making Crisis amazing and Riptides Strength D GMCs so I can get a pretty penny for my Farsight and be out for good! And part of me hopes they'll someday fix the damned game!

the rule set never was perfect. Not even in rogue trader or 5th or any other. often, much better than others on the market. This has always been purely a matter of opinion. I can see why people may prefer one set over another depending on personal preferences.
I have liked and disliked them all for one reason or another. None of them have been "bad enough" in my opinion to make me quit the game or an army. I'm more worried about having fun with my buddies than I am counting beans in a book.
But like I said, a change in playing preferences combined with improving painting skills or disgust at the prospect of having to redo an entire army at one will make me quit an "army".

Never sold or traded any army but my nids havnt come off and the shelf since 4th as terrible rules aside, it would be crazy expensive to buy all the new models required to play.

My chaos has been shelved since the beginnings of 6th once I realized the codex was just not competitive at any level. I have so much chaos though that if the next book fixes their power level I'll bring them back.

currently, my tau, GKs, and vanilla space marines all suffer from the fact that I only get so many games in (one a month is a good month) that my necrons are just too fun to switch it up.

I shelved my IG after the most recent codex. I just feel like they've become something too far detached from the army I used to play. I suppose this mostly has to do with the newer imagery and some new units, combined with me becoming increasingly bored with the IG's play style.

Has anything ever happened to your army that made you want to or actually had you get rid of it?

The stories I know of people quitting armies are a black templar player being shuffled into marines, an ork player saying he got nerfed too hard (not sure which codex he was talking about), and now an eldar player shelfing half his army because he feels bad using wraiths.

EDIT: changed to multiple answers

6th made me want to. 7th made me actually do it. Terribly over-complicated rules that became even worse when you started needing 5 codexes to play an army and a further 5 to figure out what your opponent was doing. A bit of hyperbole, but not too far from the truth.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I haven't ever sold models, and I probably never will (except for some nicely painted used last chancers, some day those will go on ebay). I quit the game and got back in once before, I might do it again. And if I have to buy new models, it will be twice as expensive.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I'm technically shelving around 12 armies right now, mostly for friends.

I guess I wanted to say, beyond changes to Codexes, is just the rulesets and the prices of models. It just feels like GW is asking too much of players these days and it comes at the expense of having fun.

It would take getting enough money to start up a new army for me to stop collecting and painting my models. I only get money to buy a unit every few months and I collect to play.

If I could have enough money to start a new competitive army, I would shelve my orks.

Or GW could follow the advice in the made-up orks romours thread and get me to shelve it.

Still waiting for Godot.

Lack of interest or fun units would make me sell or shelve an army. Also, lack of people playing it would make me quit.

I voted other; I would sell an army or even an unit if I was no longer attach to it.

When I got into 40k coming over from fantasy, I needed some fund and even more important, space. I sold my smallest army at that time, wood elves. started tau. sold most of my vampire counts, started IG, sold most of my dogs of war, partially dark elves and some brets. My IG force grew, its no longer just IG, more like imperium of man. added orks, then dark eldar.

Other: a stupidly large amount of money. I've put way too much time and effort into my army, including collecting a lot of rare OOP stuff, to get rid of it just because I don't like something about the game. Even if I hate the game it's going to sit on my display shelf unless someone shows up with one of those suitcases full of money.

99% of GW models don't hold their value, so best off keeping anything that's got some personal value and dumping what doesn't. I rarely rarely play any GW now, but still got my demons, wolves, harlequins and undead as I've had them all for over 20 years each. Everything else? Charity shop or ebayed.

So what if they don't hold their value, I'm keeping them because I've invested way too much time in building and painting them to sell for anything less than a giant suitcase full of money. I'd rather have them sitting on my display shelf looking awesome than a token amount of money that doesn't even come close to their value to me.

(And most of my stuff will hold its value. FW models sell for close to retail price, and I've got a lot of OOP stuff that is only going to go up in value. Some of that is the "maybe if you're lucky you'll see one on ebay once every year or two" kind of OOP.)

Don't remember all armies I had so I'll just list those I had after my hiatus:

Dropped Necrons in 5ed because of boredom and a monobuild playstyle.
Dropped Orks in 6ed because of boredom and "no-dex-in-sight" syndrome.
Dropped CSM in 6ed because of needing the extra funds.
Dropped Tyranids in 6ed because I didn't like the direction they were going after their new codex hit.
Started Necrons again for 7th and dropped them after 1 year because of the "feelbaditis" when playing them (also because transporting an army overseas is a chore).

Now in 7th I only have my Skitarii as I started them up just to build and paint and maybe, just maybe, to someday play a game or two.

Like peregrine, the effort me and the wife have put so much effort into our armies that selling them for anything short of enough money to pay for my kids' college (which is years off still), a new house, and enough left over to invest money into something to make me set for life is out of the question.

Some of these models in my collection haven't been in production this entire millenium; no way I'm parting with them.

I dropped Orks because just collecting models from the table isn't fun, and the new codex was a huge disappointment, especially the new units.

Not terribly satisfied with Imperial Guard, either. Meanwhile Deathwing Terminators at least do something, even while their cost is exorbitant.
