Quantum Shielding
A vehicle equipped with active quantum shielding counts all of its Front and Side Armour Values as 13.
A vehicle's quantum shielding is active until it suffers a penetrating hit, at which point it immediately deactivates.

For the remainder of the battle after a vehicle's quantum shielding deactivates, all subsequent hits against that vehicle (including hits made from subsequent shooting attacks in the same phase - either from a different weapon or a different unit - or hits made at a lower Initiative step in close combat) are treated as though the vehicle was not equipped with quantum shielding.

Does the quoted statement imply that:
if the quantum shielding takes a penetrating hit that it deactivates
or
if the vehicle takes a penetrating hit that it deactivates

If it is the quantum shielding that needs to take the hit for the shield to deactivate, does that mean that a penetrating hit on the unshielded rear armor would not cause the shield to deactivate

Thoughts?

It refers to the quantum shielding since we're told in the same sentence that it takes a penetrating hit and it deactivates. The vehicle can't deactivate, so 'it' must be the quantum shielding. Strictly speaking, quantum shielding can't take a penetrating hit... only the vehicle can.

We play it that if the vehicle takes a penetrating hit on the front or side arcs that the shielding deactivates. If the vehicle takes a penetrating hit on the rear arc (where there is no shielding), the shielding stays up.

You could easily argue that a rear penetrating hit would strip the shielding. The wording is ambiguous. Sloppy writing since 'it' may very well refer to two different things in a single sentence.

The subject of the sentence, the vehicle, is unchanged throughout the sentence.

The subject is the quantum shielding. Is the vehicle active, or is the quantum shielding active?

But as stated, the rules don't ever allow for the quantum shielding to take a penetrating hit. Only the vehicle can take a penetrating hit.

This might be the best interpretation, and is how most people seem to play it...

"A vehicle's quantum shielding is active until it (the vehicle) suffers a penetrating hit, at which point it (the quantum shielding) immediately deactivates."

Wouldn't the subject of the sentence be the vehicles "Quantum Shielding"?

A vehicle's quantum shielding is active until it suffers a penetrating hit, at which point it immediately deactivates.

What does "it" refer to?
It must refer to something that can suffer a penetrating Hit. Can the quantum shielding suffer a penetrating Hit? (Like the Void shield?)

The answer is "the vehicle". If "the vehicle"suffers a penetrating hit, the shield deactivates. Which, by RaW, would mean that a shot through the back would indeed deactivate the shield.
But i would say that the intention of it was that you have to penetrate through the shield first, just like Void shields. Unfortunately, RaW tends to have this issue.....

You are also correct, as such, by a very very bad language writing, my guess would be this by RaW:

*A vehicle's quantum shielding is active until it [vehicle] suffers a penetrating hit, at which point it [quantum shielding] immediately deactivates.*

I agree with everyone's interpretation of the literal meaning of the language, from a grammatical standpoint. Is there any fluff on the Quantum shielding within the same book that might offer some support spirit-wise for either interpretation?
