I know it has an inbuilt velocity tracker (meaning skyfire) and it is a Tau Empire tank so it can have longstrike in it (for BS5) but is the turret any good?

Well, are you fighting so many flyers that you need that kind of investment?

The Hammerhead has a relatively steep base cost. You can just as well fit Riptides or Broadsides with Velocity Trackers. It can definately threaten flyers, but Tau can already get great skyfire elsewhere. Why would you need to bring it?

are you talking about the skyray missile defence gunship, son? If so, its a pretty good flyer and MC killer.

No, he is talking about fitting a Hammerhead with twin-linked missile pods as its main gun.

All of the FW Hammerhead turrets are rather lackluster.
Unless you're facing a flying circus or air force list it's a better investment just to use the skyray for air defense, since it's cheaper and often takes less incoming fire thanks to it's one use weapons.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."

"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Makes tyranid flyers, especially flyrants, very unhappy. If it doesn't move it can fire all 6 missles, and the gun of course. After that you can use the gun to mop up troops.

The problem, like all of the FW turret options, is that it's two separate weapons and the idiot that wrote the current codex took away our "may shoot like a fast vehicle" upgrade. So unless you turn your Hammerhead into a static bunker you're only firing half of your turret at full BS (and if you take the dual fusion turret you can't fire the second shot at all). So unless you find an opponent who's willing to house rule away that stupid mistake and fix Tau vehicles it's not worth taking any of the FW turrets.

Broadsides w TL HYMP and TL SMS - 195pts gets you 36" range - 12 Str 7 ap shots and 12 Str 5 AP 5 Shots that ignore cover and don't need line of sight. Most flyers are AV11 or T6 for FMC.

195 pts is without skyfire which would add 20pts to each model in the unit. So you're looking at 255 total to fire at full bs.
if you gave them all their full compliment of missile drones you'd run at 327 points and have 12 more Str 7 ap4 shots.

for 345 pts you'd have 3 sky rays that would provide 3 tanks at bs4, 6 marker lights, 12 Str 5 AP 5 Shots that ignore cover and don't need line of sight, and 18 seeker missiles that are what, Str8 ap 3, 72 inch range, and with markerlight support, have ignore cover, and no line of site at bs5.

both options have their uses...

Hammerheads Have Velocity tracker? I thought only the Skyray has that?

It's a FW turret upgrade that replaces the ion cannon or railgun with two twin-linked missile pods and a velocity tracker. This is the only way to get a velocity tracker on a Hammerhead, even the other FW turret options don't have it.
