Please tell me you aren't one of those nutjobs who thinks Iraq was about oil? Because that is just not true.

Given that we haven't gained oil out of it, I'd say its 100% false.

It was about WMDs, removing a horrible dictator from power, maybe daddy issues, but whatever it was about it was certainly not about oil.

The U.S. surpassed the Middle East in oil production, getting the Saudis panties all bunched up. This is why we have such cheap oil right now, with the Saudis trying to flood the market and squeeze out the U.S.

No, he's an impressionable college kid that changes his opinions relatively regularly based on the reading/lecture du jour at his university.
As others have said, you've seemed to confuse Memorial Day with Veteran's Day.
Paying your respect to people that didn't make it home by cherishing and spending time with your family that you get to see is a bad thing?

Lots of well named Democrats pushing to go in. So why does Bush bear all the blame?
Do you think the US is smuggling Iraqi oil in and pretending it's coming out of the Bakken?
The US has grown exponentially as an oil producer because of rapid advances in fracking and directional drilling, nothing to do with the war in Iraq.
I work for the military keeping their healthcare up to date two weekends each month, year round. I do my part. If I want to relax on Memorial Day and have a beer (or orange cream soda, in this case) and a burger, then I'll be damned if somebody tells me I'm in the wrong.

Not telling me anything I don't know. I've been in the oil business 22 years. Just curious, though where your smuggling comment came out of.

That doesn't mean Oil wasn't a factor. It just means if it was a factor, we failed spectacularly.
Personally, I think 1 day a year called Veteran's Day is enough for celebrating our military; past, present, and future. Especially in the US when really the only few wars we had that actually were a existential threat to the Nation's existence were the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The rest were pretty much wars of choice and policy.
Honestly, I'm getting a get a bit tired of the fetishization of the military that has occurred since 9/11. However, since I am not a veteran or active duty I'm sure my opinion doesn't carry much water. I'm just a citizen, voter, and tax payer.

You left out WW2 from the list where we were threatened as a country. This is a balls out speech from President Roosevelt the year before we got hauled into it.

And plenty of other citizen, tax payers, and voters believe differently. I don't think it's too much to ask that we take two days of the entire year to devote to honoring those that serve our country (and in the case of Memorial Day, did so with all that they could give).

I think the point is that plenty of people serve the country but only one class of servant gets special treatment.
Where's the national day of remembrance for IRS employees god damnit! (I'm being silly, I understand why soldiers get a day of commemoration, though I don't really see the need for it either.)

WWII was still a war of choice. The Japanese or the Germans would not have been able to destroy the US with the weapons available at the time. They could attack and hurt us, but not destroy us.

Well, it tastes like freedom! We have a soda company in CT that only uses cane sugar, no HFCS crap. So orange cream for the win.

Without our intervention they would have eventually.
The Germans were rapidly inventing new weapons, including working towards atomic bombs. They would have gotten them eventually, and other things too. They also would have not hesitated to put them in V2 rockets either. That gives them ICBMs while any nuclear weapons the allies have would be limited to being dropped from planes.
Japan would have consolidated their gains in the pacific and soon had a new generation of soldiers and resources from the new territory. Granted, it would be a while before either Germany or Japan could launch an invasion of the US with any hope of success, but it would still be a question of when, not if.
If we hesitated in WW2 to get involved, the Cold War would have been between the US and Germany/Japan. And both those empires would likely still be around today.
This is assuming Germany was smart and didn't poke the Russian bear till they could actually take it on.

Speculative history is fun! Thankfully we choose to go to war with them before they had all that stuff then, huh! Hence a war of choice since when we went to war with them, they couldn't threaten us with national destruction. FACT!
Sure, the Japanese could peel off some Pacific territory and attack the Alaskan (Aleution) Islands... and that equals existential national threat? Okay then.
Perhaps the case could be made for the War of 1812... but I'm not familiar enough with the specifics of the war. The burning of Washington (among other things) seemed punitive and retaliatory and not an actual attempt to destroy/absorb the US back into the Empire.

With the resources of Europe they could have moved in on South America a country at a time and worked their way north. WW 2 was definitely not a war of choice.
I just want to put some of my opinions into perspective.
I understand that some people cant give or help out in.
But the reason I give to this foundations when I can(which is sadly little now) and feel the way I do is because i have some friend who where injured in several different wars. Being the the military took alot of things from them. They lost their family because the stress of a military career was too much. They lost their mobility. Or lost even their children because PTSD made them unfit parents.
And I feel that people who just post on facebook about "Repost this if you want to honor the troops" and I feel doing these kind of things ignores the problems vets actually face. I know it sounds stupid, but this is how i feel
Well at least your argument is gradually improving I guess.
You've dropped everyone who tries to enjoy the day off your list of people doing nothing good, now we just need to work on helping you understand that people sometimes want the thought to be seen as well as had. I don't feel that way, but plenty of people want others to know that they have thought of the vets, even if only for the moment it took to hit like. This means they've done just as much thinking of the vets as the person who went to a barbie and thought for a second "damn I'm lucky, good on you guys who came before/are serving now". And I think we'd managed to reach the point that you understood those people weren't doing something terrible by it. Or even, shock horror, someone may hit like BEFORE going to a barbie and enjoying their holiday.
I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...
One thing I can't understand is how the military, (or more likely the political talking heads), maintain this huge air of secrecy about honouring your returning war dead & repatriation of their remains...
We're not war hungry by any means, but I know for a fact that the relatives of our fallen heroes take great solace in seeing how so many ordinary citizens show their appreciation & respect for the sacrifices made by their loved ones overseas, or sadly now, even here at home.
I think if the US military & political brains would allow a similar public you guys would see that a lot more people do care than what it currently seems.
