I recently had a dicussion with a guy that told me that the carnifex isnt good anymore. As a tyranid player myself, I think he's wrong... So here is what came to my mind; What is your top 3 units of our codex, based on the cost vs the impact on the game?

My Top 3

1-Flyrant TLD + Electro grubs ( deadly, take cares of tanks, move quickly, hard to take down, synapse and psyker )
2-Exocrine ( especially if you run the LAN, deadly, the only ranged ap 2 weapon ( except some from the bio-titans ) and doesnt cost too much )
3-Carnifex TLD ( doesnt cost much, are quite tank, have lots of shots, take cares of the tanks and they have a nice hammer of wrath )

Here is my list, what about your?

Forge World allowed:

Flyrants
Malanthrope
Tyrannocyte

Of course with Forge World not allowed, I simply throw a Venomthrope in there instead of the Mal. As to the OP, I would say that Carnifex are "good" but I wouldn't say they're top 3 honestly.

My top 3 are:

1. Flyrant. Best all-around unit in the codex and one of the Top 10 best units in the entire game as well.

2. Malanthrope. Best force-multiplier unit (FMU) not in the codex .

3. Mawloc. Most bang-for-the-buck MC on a cost-per-wounds basis. Great mobility.

The dakkfafex is really good. However, it needs to buddy up with a tyrannocyte to address its lack of mobility, and that would then be 2 units.

I'm seeing the Mawloc a lot on here, but I am just not getting those results. Maybe it's just me, but in a recent RTT where I took two of them, I killed a total of 4 models in 3 games. Before that, I took one to an RTT and killed 3 models in 3 games. They are just too situational for me honestly. They are our cheapest MCs, and perhaps they'd be useful in a Progressive Objective mission, but I just can't justify them in my lists right now.

Did they just get shot off the board? They are a definite shooting priority, 'course you have to wait until they've emerged and eaten a unit or two of guys...

One of them killed one jetbike, mishapped, and got misplaced right in front of a Seer council, got shrieked and died, the other scattered off and got shrieked by another farseer, both died Eldar turn 2. The second game, both came in and killed two Thundercav between them, as I hit the ones without shields. They then both left the table, came back in and targetted a GK terminator squad, both scattered off and got assaulted. but killed one. Game 3 vs Nid flying circus, I tried to stay off with Comms relay, failed. One got shot by encroaching Flyrants and died, the other burrowed back, targetted Rippers and scattered 10" off, he never caught them in assault as he chased them for the rest of the game.

280 points that didn't get me a single objective and killed 4 models total... I'm going to pass on that. To be fair though, I also do not use any Lictors in my lists (not a fan of them).

I wouldn't say that. Usually a Flyrant list can get first blood turn 1, before the Mawlocs have even come in. Even then, they have to mishap and also roll a 1 without killing a unit, which is unlikely. I'm not a fan of Mawlocs, but that's not really my big concern with them.

Performance-wise, yeah, they are very situational. I've had bad games with them. I've also had games where my mawloc almost single-handedly destroyed my opponent's Farsight-bomb deathstar or where someone used it against me and almost wiped out my centurionstar after I gated with them. If you want dependable offense, look to the flyrant. The mawloc definitely isn't it.

Now the main reason why I rate the mawlocs so highly is this. It plays to objectives extremely well.

1. It is great in Maelstrom objectives with it's ability to "teleport" from objective to objective every other turn.

2. It is great in Eternal War missions with its ability to come up on objectives at the end of the game (assuming it survives til then and that it doesn't scatter too far off course).

3. With Maelstrom kill-a-unit objectives, it can threaten MSU units that our other units might have problems getting to.

4. It is a 6W T6 MC and so normal units will have problems killing it, which helps its suvivability in Maelstrom objectives.

5. It is a fire-magnet and will draw enemy fire away from your other units. It is also cheap enough such that if it dies, the Tyranid army isn't affected too much.

6. It is one of our best "solutions" to enemy deathstar armies. It ignores Invisibility and can even hurt you if you are locked in combat. It becomes especially deadly if you are also running multiple lictors in the army.

7. You can't tie it up in combat due to Hit-&-Run.

Overall, I really like the mawloc but not so much for its offense, which is sometimes hit-or-miss. Rather I like it because it plays to the mission objectives really well with its mobility and the fact that it is a really cost-effective MC. And if it should kill a few units in the game, then that is just an added bonus.

Odds are extremely good that your opponent has never seen any of these on the table.

Non FW

1: Fly-Tyrants
2: Dakkafex
3: Tyrannocyte This unit made so many ok units good. Even competitive.

Also in the camp that puts the 15pts troops as highly valuable!

1 - Flyrant (does everything I want it to and then more)
2 - Dakkafex (pew pew infantry and HoW armor, great dual purpose, always has something it can hurt)
3 - Venomthrope (throws a wrench in opponent's target priority and makes my hormagaunt screen last a bit longer)

Would say malanthrope because it is packed with so many rules it's almost a joke, but I do not own one nor do I use FW models.

Can I nominate the flyrant 3 times??
Serious note though, I don't play FW and the other two units that I see being used are dakkafexes and venomthrope.
