As a few of you incorrectly call soccer "football" I thought I'd open this thread up to handle comments or discussions on women's football to avoid multiple threads on the topic. Mods please wack if unnecessary.
And to start it off: America Hurr!
U.S. Women Beat Australia 3-1 In Teams' Opening Match Of World Cup
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/06/08/412866916/u-s-womens-world-cup-opens-tonight-against-australia
Evidently we had to have A-10s providing air cover to protect the team from errant drop bears. The Navy will neither confirm nor deny the reactivated New Jersey and Missouri were firing full on broadsides to keep back the killer crocodiles, flying great white sharks of death, and terribly poisonous spider and ant hordes from carrying off the players. Australia reported a light day with only 27,000 people being eaten by the local flora and fauna.

I was all ready too dismiss the Women's World Cup. Not because women can't play football, on a technical level it's just as good as the Men's game, but because it's got massive gulfs in quality between the teams. This makes most games pointless to watch as you know who's going to win. Let me give you an example, Germany 10- Ivory Coast 0... In the men's game this match up would have been a lot closer, as are most games in the Men's World Cup. But because the women's game is massively underfunded by most countries, it makes tournaments such as these practically pointless.
I watch the World Cup to be surprised and entertained. Not to be bored to death..

I caught the last half of the game last night. Im not an avid fan of Soccer but I was stunned at some of the terrible plays that were made by both teams. Im guessing a lot of it has to do with the fact that woman aren't paid to play soccer professional like men are so their is a gulf between skill levels due to financial concerns.

I think that in large part that is due to Title IX, combined with a lack of "lesbian perception" with the sport, unlike say, softball.

I dunno my high school soccer team had some pretty masculine women on the team almost as many as the softball team. It was also met with about as much interest as women's basketball.

Hence why I said perception.... The women's soccer team pictured in my mom's high school year books looks so similar to the cheer-leading squad that they could be identical.
What I'm saying is, that at the beginning of Title IX, when women's sports were just starting out and just forming, many parents of the young ladies who participated, viewed soccer as acceptable and "lady-like", as there was already the perception that women who played softball were butch lesbians and were more like men, based off of... I dont know, beer league softball??
I think that US women's soccer in particular, does well on the international level, because we seem to be on a level playing field with the "typical" soccer countries. I could be wrong, but I think that the US Women's team formed around the same time as countries like England and Germany, so we're on basically the same playing field as far as technical skills, tactics and the like go.

I think that some of the perception/discomfort of HS aged boys towards the girls on softball/soccer/basket ball is because they are athletic which gives them a bit of a masculine vibe and that can be intimidating to boys and younger men.
The girls on our soccer team were a lot like the girls who ran track, they had some really powerful legs and tended not to be as busty due to all the running, making them seem a bit less "woman-like" I dated a girl on the soccer team and I heard a lot of complaints from her friends about how the guys treated them differently and joked about how they were all lesbians. The girls on the basketball team were usually pretty tall and if they had big hands or an athletic build guys would tend to be intimidated by them too. I think it's probably a reflection of the insecurity most guys have at that age.

Amazingly, there has yet to be a single game played in a mild snowfall... I'm honestly absolutely disappointed in how this is working out. I at least expected Winterpeg & Edmonton to showcase a proper Canadian 'late Spring'.
Oh well, we've at least had some lightning delays, and apparently very strong winds out in Moncton. Meanwhile, the roof is still (for now) intact at Montreal's old Olympic Stadium! (hooray!)
Too bad team Canada has look abysmal thus far. If they manage to make out of group play, they'll likely go down in their first elimination match.
On a completely out there note, I used to play hockey with Diana Matheson, (she scored Canada's bronze medal winning goal at the London games), and hopefully she'll make it back onto the field for Canada soon!

US gives Germany Two Heaping Teaspoons of Freedom!
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/06/30/418725724/womens-soccer-game-tonight-features-the-worlds-top-2-teams
In a battle between a fantastic attack and a fantastic defense, the latter prevailed, as two penalty kicks — one made, one whiffed — and a late insurance goal gave the U.S. a 2-0 win over Germany and a berth in the Women's World Cup final.
Alexandra Popp of Germany is checked by teammate Simone Laudehr after she and U.S. midfielder Morgan Brian knocked heads during Tuesday night's Women's World Cup semifinal in Montreal.
i
After American forward Alex Morgan tumbled over a German defender — a foul that appeared to occur outside of the box — forward Carli Lloyd got a penalty shot past Germany's Nadine Angerer, whom the U.S. had kept busy all night.
Thirteen minutes earlier, defender Julie Johnston pulled down star German striker Alexandra Popp inside the box, but Celia Sasic sent her penalty kick feet left of the goal.
The U.S. defense has not allowed a goal in five games, since its first game of the tournament against Australia.
America's attackers continued their tournament-long trouble finishing, but kept constant pressure on the top-ranked Germans through the winning goal in 69th minute, then limited Germany's opportunities through the rest of the match.
In the 84th minute, substitute forward Kelley O'Hara knocked home a Carli Lloyd ball across the goal to give the Americans and their stalwart defense a comfortable cushion.
The U.S., which hasn't won a World Cup since 1999, will play for the title on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET, facing either fourth-ranked Japan or sixth-ranked England.

The German one? That should have been a red card ha. And the US's was debatable whether it was in or out of the box. Rough game for Germany, they should be filthy with themselves a) for missing it and b) for giving the 2nd goal. And a little grumpy at the ref as well for the 1st

It was on in the background last night because it was England, the only reason I had any interest whatsoever, football means nothing to me.
I was hoping England did well because it would put the simian mens team into proper perpective. We had expectations partly met by seeing that England ladies could actually take a penalty without bottling it.
Home goal at the end was a dumb blonde moment, at worst she should have allowed Japan a late corner and fought back of it, the Japanese were rattled in the second half England may well have scored and in play goal. You just don't make a goalie pass like that. Well she did, and....
Pity, the home goal robbed the England ladies of much of their leverage, it would have been nice o seen them in the final , USA would have trounced them though.
The regular football morons have been chanting of their fifty years of hurt, while idiot overpaid, hystrionic, chav, pampered prima donna, intellect impoverished male footballers jump from failure to failure.
Damn ladies, you robbed us of some valuable social commentary by not defeating Japan. Semi-finalist is a realistic goal for the mens team, though they normally go out in the round before.
