It makes no sense breaks the 40k fluff and just LOOKS WRONG.
Tyranids firing the Icarus Lascannon? Wtf?
Eldar using human entrenchments and trench lines? WTF - NEVER in their fluff would they ever do this.
Necrons? Even Orks and Tau that could plausibly deploy trench tactics don't use the same weapons like lascannons so they shouldn't be able to.
Xenos players should not be allowed to take Imperium/Chaos Human entrenchments or fortifications. This is just WRONG.

I've been hearing a lot of things lately that just make no sense with this game :(
I haven't picked up an issue of WD for some time, but I think I recall Battle reports being removed from them some time ago and I wonder if this isn't partly causing the huge detachment GW has with their armies and rules since they aren't effectively "play testing" them anymore.

Because GW is far too lazy to make Xenos fortifications.

That Tyranid entrenchment is awesome but fine model your own Xenos terrain but you still can't use a human Icarus Lascannon.
Come on! They should FAQ in some alternative Xenos weapons if they are using the ADL.

Sadly, Tyranids don't really have a lascannon equivalent in their army.
Although a twinlinked Rupture cannon would be amusing as an anti-air weapon.

Why, what does it matter?
Just say it's a Tyranid Phlegm Cannon.
"oh, what stats does that have?"
"exactly the same as an Icarus Lascannon."
"How fortunate!"

There are some third party compaines making IMO decent alternative ADLs for Xenos. I got the one below from MicroArt Studios, IIRC.
A friend of mine converted an Eldar ADL out of Easter Eggs, which might sound cheesy, but it actually looks very cool.

ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Xenos terrain and lack thereof has been a constant bugbear of mine over the years with GW.
Obviously they feel it wouldnt sell very well or would take up too much of the production line to make but I'd wager even a few good kits would sell like hotcakes.
The old spore chimneys from FW were fantastic.

all races can take them... just model them t match your army.
While it would be cool to have all variants for each race, i get why they dont do it for cost reasons. Making that many models just would be crazy. And most of them are easy to make your own variation.
its easier to just have them all with the same statline.
Void shield generator is now a Bubble Field generator etc etc... just happen to have the same stats so no need to read another book.

I think those are remarkably well done interpretations of the same item for different armies!
I would love to see the egg-shell elder one
I've been contemplating scratch-building my own ADL as I really don't like the look all that much of the one GW sells, but I don't know it's dimensions to make mine accurate.

They need to make certain unfluffy armies not able to take Aegis Defence lines.
Namely: Tyranids, Dark Eldar, and Harlequins. None of those 3 can justify having static emplacements because they are space-bound and rarely spend time on planets except to raid/eat/consume.
The rest can have defence lines but they shouldn't be allowed to equip imperial weapons.
This applies to all the forts/bunkers too. Imagine Tyranids firing auto-cannons from a imperial wall of marytrer's bunker.
This isn't rouge trader anymore. It is just wrong. GW should ban Tyranid's from taking Aegis Defence Lines and shooting lascannons.

Since tyranids are a purely biological race, using bioweapons and ships, I don't see how they couldn't have some bug accompany them down to a planet that could hoark up a pile of organic goo that hardens into a wall...

it seems you are personally facing some list that is troubling you. Our DE and nids players would never take those as the points are much better used elsewhere. However in a pinch battle propping up junk or biomass would be the equivalent of an ADL. What is to prevent them from using Actual imperial fortifications they have taken over? In Theory orks do that all the time albeit as bs2 so they still suck. I have never found any of the fortifications to be remotely unbalanced for any army.

"Aegis Defense Lines" and "Bastions" were intially added into the game to serve as a generic statline and a basic footprint for all races to use and to be able to field scratch-built fortifications.
It wasn't until we got the Honored Imperium and other stuff that idea went belly-up.

Genestealer Cults make sense. Humaniod Genestealers and infected humans should be able to fire the ADL lascannon.
Just keep it fluffy and its all good.

If Xenos players want to take an Aegis and make it look fluffy, there is a simple solution - turn it around. Then they aren't using it for themselves, but taking it away from the defenders.

Are you telling me my Harlies never take over an IoM position before the battle, just to shoot you with your own gun?
That seems exactly like what Harlequins would do.
In fact, I think that'd be more fluffy than converting an ADL for them.
(My CWE or Tau I'd need to convert up a line for if I wanted one. But bringing my own fortifications doesn't feel right.)

They could have been there the whole time ya know.... requisitioned from an earlier battle fought in the same warzone maybe centuries ago.
That's how I justify my CSM and Orks using Imperial defense lines. They took the enemy base and dug in.
ADL are the most justifiable, but I also have Vengeance Weapons Batteries, that I kept simple and didn't attatch all the extra Bling to, painted them rusted and antiqued, and are just ancient cannons that have been at the battle site forever.
This is 40k, you can justify anything with a little background story.

To answer the original question, fortifications don't have to represent something you brought with you. They can represent a strategic asset that you captured before the fight began. This makes sense for the Tau, at least.

As has been mentioned it could easily be a captured position. Also if the people who make them have no idea how it works why should those who capture them need to?
