So I haven't played much 40K since the switchover to 6th and 7th edition. Buying new units is too damn expensive, and I feel the rules could be more competently written by a trio of 5 year olds with access to 3 tons of Pixie Stixs and a 2 hour deadline.

I have a Tyranid army and a Grey Knight army. I have no intention of getting an new army of any kind.

So why should I finish painting these armies and play again? Or should I just sell off my stuff to the first mediocre bid I can get and cut my losses?

I don't play in any tournaments, I don't even play at my FLGS. I played with a small group of people in my basement. The local scene consists mostly of people I'd rather not play with, but I haven't checked in a while, since I don't even have the lateest rules or codices.

Take a look at your local game scene.
Do you want to be part of the 40k gaming?
Only you can answer that.
If you throw the gauntlet to convince you, my motivation is what?
Better question: what is yours?

Rules are easily available very cheaply, pick up some bargains or do some googling...if you know what I mean.

You have the units already, so no need to splurge on anything new.

Then if you still find you aren't enjoying things, put your stuff in the attic until such a time as you may want to play with little plastic soldiers again, or you need to make a quick buck and sell them.

On moon miranda.

This isn't something others can really choose for you.

That said, from my perspective, 40k is clearly in crisis.

This is the perfect description of what's happening

From my own perspective, games are increasingly harder to find, and often much more one-sided than in previous editions, with games effectively being "over" by turn 3 than they would have been in the past. Tournament attendance at local events is down significantly from 5E, and local events in general often just much rarer, with pickup games being often impossible to get.

And GW's financials support this. They've been on a declining Real (inflation adjusted) revenue slide since 2004, and coupled with MUCH higher prices, it means they're moving significantly less product, and that means fewer players.

So, TL;DR, if you've got a close group of friends with a basement or game room to play in pretty routinely, then go ahead and get back in. Otherwise, games are likely to be more difficult to find than they have in the past and they're likely to be more one-sided.

Do what you want. Don't go by what others say or you will regret it. Now that being said, ironic I am going to say something and see if you will listen to me.

Take a break. DON'T SELL or get rid of your stuff. Put them in the closet, under your bed or in the basement or where ever.

Trust me, you will get the "itch" and may want to model/paint a bit or start again and wish you never got rid/sell anything.

So take a break if you lost the passion. Hell I have taken lots of breaks. I am coming back from another long break. So glad I never got rid of my stuff.

So I say keep what you have. Take a break if you don't want to play but the "itch" will come back eventually. It can be next year or 2 years from now. You will be drawn back one day.

playing tyranids is like playing a NPC for other armies to trash. In addition to being severely overcosted, the units themselves are pretty mediocre, and certain armies like eldar are practically unbeatable even if you had unlimited points.

The only viable list to date is 6 flyrants, and even then, they'll whinge and cry if you use it, because they just want to trash NPCs, and not be challenged.

3,000 points of tyranids will still easily lose to 1,000 points of D-spam and scatterbikes. Let that sink it. We're overcosted by more than 3 times.

Also, given the cruddace will be the next codex writer, expect that ratio to go up to 4, or even 5 times more overcosted.

If you like the look of tyranids, just keep collecting. If not, smash everything up with a hammer and vaccum up the dust. Don't even bother consider playing them.

Post a Craigslist add asking the best price you think your army deserves. Ignore all lowball offers and only take best offers you are comfortable with. Time is not against you. Keep fishing for best offers. Do not stress.

I on the other hand have been trying to sell my army and i keep getting jerked around and I ran out of time and my metal bitz can not be exchanged nor my 2 cans of propellant for the spray gun, and paint pots. I also cant seem to break even with the $80 of 20 blood letter painted professionally. donkey-caves see them and want to only give $15.

You might want to add the option to wait until you get a 7th ed codex, with decurions and all. Which I'm assuming at least nids will get.

It doesn't make the other armies less powerful but it makes yours fluffier and levels the playing field if you don't get roflstomped in the first turn.

You could always keep painting and wait for the sun to shine through the darkness that is GW. Or hopefully GW will remove its head from their rears. Or you could wait for GW to have to sell the IP but that might be another 15+ years from now.

Whatever you do, don't sell.
Too many people have sold their army only to really regret it later.
If you decide to quit, just store your stuff away somewhere in case you ever feel like playing 40k again.

Whether you should stop or not only you can decide. Ask yourself if you are still getting fun out of it.

I don't understand the idea of selling your army. Unless you absolutely loath it and its very existence is an eyesore, it's a work of art you put a lot of love into. I'd never sell what meager amount of models that I have (and am slowly increasing), as well, I painted or intend to paint them. No way am I doubling back on hours spent trying to make them look purty just to sell them at a loss for my time, and neither should you OP.

Break out of your comfort zone.
Check out the local scene again, adapt, evolve, play...

I say Tyranids! Marines rules may come and go, but everybody has to EAT sometime!

I was sort of in the same position, out of the game for (mumbly-mumblety)... decided to do something instead of just sit around looking at all the little plastic elephants in the room.

Came back to the hobby, was able to start a new army which I'm slowly building soldier by soldier at my local GW.

I've met some grognards and some youtz... learning a bit from both and enjoying myself in the process.

Try it, if it doesn't work... then get out.

Sounds like you don't enjoy it anymore but are reluctant to admit defeat after so much time and money spent.

I say count that money as having been spent buying many years of good times with friends, sell your crap, and move on to something you're more fired up about.

Sounds like you are burned out. Take a break. Only sell your models if you need the money. GW prices are only increasing, so if you do sell and then decide you want back into the hobby, you're not going to have a good time.

I had a similar experience with PC gaming. One day I decided I was done and haven't played in a couple years. I didn't sell my PC though. Tangentially, this is how I got back into 40k. Thankfully I didn't sell all my 40k hobby stuff from ages ago!

Also, you could always use your models for an RPG campaign. Get some friends, meet in the man cave, use your GK models for Dark Heresy.

Sell them if you don't want to restart again down the track. If you think you might want to play again, don't sell them. Simple really. If you don't want to play ever again, sell the models.

Don't sell the models if you need money though. It's a waste because miniatures are worth bugger all compared to the amount of time and effort you put in to them. If money is the reason for selling, I'd put some more effort in to saving money instead of selling models as it's only going to be a VERY temporary solution.

Tyranids are actually fairly competitive, and not just the pentyrant lists. Have a look in the tyranid tactics thread, which is huge and full of excellent advice.
You will of course lose to a tournament Eldar list, but that's one faction, and it's part of the newly powered cycle of codexes. I expect the next tyranid codex will have the new models and new formations in, and I anticipate it being on a par with the three 'new' codexes (necrons, eldar, space marines).

you forgot to mention that robin "bona fide" cruddace will be writing the codex. Wings will be 100pts a pop, and just let MCs travel 12" instead of give them flying. All other costs will be doubled.

call me negative, but it has already happened twice, pretty sure it'll happen again.

I'll be laughing then, when you can take 1,000 points of elves and scythe down 3,000 points of tyranids...oh wait, they can already easily do that!

There are so many amazing games out there. Go to your local store and see what they are playing. I cant recommend Infinity, Malifaux, and Warmachine enough. Basically, if they're playing anything else, play that.

Given the extremely poor attitude you display in your first two sentences, I think you should quit. I know I wouldn't want to play a game against another player with such a hostile outlook on the game. The hobby is about having fun, it's clear that you're not.

Well, you clearly don't like the rules and feel the hobby is too expensive (which has always been the case BTW. Contrary to popular belief, 40K did not just suddenly become expensive with 7th edition), its pretty clear you should cut and run. Wait to sell your Nids until their 7th edition codex comes out, so you can get top dollar.

You just put into words what I've been trying to say for months. If you don't want to play Necrons, Eldar, or some flavor of loyalist Space Marines/Ad Mech, you're going to be treated like an NPC.
