I am a new convert to KOW

First game was this past weekend with LOTR figs (Kingdom of Men vs Elves) Liked it, loved it, want some more of it (or so the country song goes)

One of my mates dug into his basement to find his Bretonians and is also working on some beastmen figs he never got around to painting back in the day.

Having sold my Orcs many years ago I went "all in" for the Undead. $300 got me 220+ figs (including heroes) and the shiny new rulebook when it is ready and free shipping to the states. That puts me over 2500pts without magic items and necromancer powers if I don't max the units out.

So who else is digging out old stuff or starting new, and whatcha playing?

p.s. I am putting this in a Mantic thread, so if you found this post you are contemplating KoW or looking to spread some manure on my post. Please refrain from the latter, if you don't like the rules, figs, the logo, the name Mantic or anything else, please refrain from commenting like a big boy or girl.

p.p.s. As full disclosure I am also a Dreadball player but had avoided KoW for fear of liking it and spending more money.

Respectfully,

I started a few months ago, and like you LotR was my first port of call, as I found KoW was far faster/simpler/better balanced than War of the Ring.

Now, though, I am tentatively planning on starting a Mantic undead army suitable for anything from Mordheim to KoW via AoS and any other system that comes along. I've always liked the range, but there's now enough games out there that I can justify the army.

I started playing at the end of 2014. I had just finished a medieval historical army, which I use for Sword & Spear, SAGA and Lion Rampant. So I use that as Kingdoms of Men.

I like it a lot. I never played WHFB so I can't compare, but I play a lot of different games, and KoW is excellent.

A bunch of my gamer buddies are in on the Kickstarter, so we might have quite a crew playing here in San Diego soon.

Here's a pic from one of my games at the KoW tournament at KingdomCon in April http://i.imgur.com/aaYgj3ul.jpg

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Was planning to pick it up for a while.

Have an Abyssal army on the way from the kickstarter. Just ordered an orc and a goblin starter force. Also using a mixture of Reaper Bones and other manufacturers models (including some old bits of GW skeletons) to make an unded army (and also fill in for characters etc for the goblin, orc and abyssal armies).

Also have some Bones beastmen which I will hope to forge into a beastman counts as army once the list is published.

Will be trying to get my gaming group on board using them as loaner armies and to give me a few options when playing

I'm new to KOW just ordered the new rule book. I did play WFB but that was many years ago back in 3rd edition.

I've been picking up a few boxes here and there mostly GW stuff as the models are better apart from the some of the undead.

I'm aiming to start four small armies and build up from there.

So far I have

Wood Elves
Wardancers
Archers
Treeman (very old model)
two characters

Undead
Cavalry
Skeletons
two characters

Human
Elspeth Von Draken on Dragon
Empire Ironsides

Chaos Dwarf
Not picked up any of these yet

i dropped all GW games two years ago and have been looking for a game that I could play my Skaven army. I ordered the kings of war 2 rulebook from my FLGS today and I am looking forward to my first game. I ordered the deluxe version so I could give the soft back cover to my older brother in Cleveland who's group is making the switch to kings of war 2 also.

Reaper Minis. They have loads of skeleton lords. Check out their Bones range (for the bones material (a softer PVC plastic) rather than because it is for undead ).

Well, I've got a bunch of goblins that'll be gathering dust if I don't do SOMETHING with them...there's a few gnoblars, too, and I'm planning to pick up some Mantic gobbos as well. I figure it'll be a good mix for an attention-drawing Rabble unit to run right up at the enemy battle line while the cavalry outflanks...

Speaking of which, anyone know some good forest goblin-like equivalents? Or spider-themed goblins in general? I like my spider riders, but I'm certainly open to different ladz.

I'll be trying KoW for the first time this week.

Haven't played WHFB since 7th edition was released - not because I hated it, I just needed a break but then when 8th hit, the entire local community ragequit and I had nothing to come back to. So I went in on the KoW 2 Kickstarter.

I'll start with my GW Dwarfs and Orcs. Hoping to see a good Tomb Kings list soon.

Coming in from 40k and, for a while at least, Fantasy. We had a surprisingly large fantasy community and AoS seems to be shifting more than a few of them to KoW, so hoping for a tourney scene to come up.

Got Orks, which I will convert to use for both games, Daemons of Khorne which I am looking to use just for KoW, and Dwarves because they're by far the coolest of the 'good guy' armies IMO

I still have my Dark Elves, so planning to use them as Twilight Kin or something. Otherwise I may pick up some Mantic undead and elves.

I've been doing this for a couple of years now, though I haven't played KoW in awhile (lack of time and been waiting for the new rules to be finished).

I used to play WHFB in 3rd/4th but stopped because HeroHammer.

When I found KoW, I dug out my old Ogres and High/Dark Elves to start with (and still working on both of them) and since then have also gotten 2 forces of Basileans running from Rackham prepaints I had sitting around, turned my LotR Minas Tirith guys into a Kingdoms of Men army, and am in the process of doing the same with the Moria Goblins (into Goblins). I also combined some LotR Army of the Dead models with other undead I had sitting around and they turned into an army as well.

I've got lots of other pokers in the fire, but I need to finish some of these existing ones first!

Waiting for next rule book and Lizard rules.

Doing 6mm Fantasy. Exciting stuff. Will have to make rules for monstrously huge creatures when we get to know the rules.

I know there were some groups snapping up Warmaster figs on Ebay to do KoW in 10's, and I know of some doing it in 15's.

I have some of the Ral Partha D&D battlesystems figs in 15's...hmm...may need to dig them out come to think of it. 20 x 15 for troop, 20x20 for regiment, 20x40 for horde 20 x 60 for legion and go with 25mm wide for orcs.

6's though. WOW. would love to see pics.

They have not arrived yet but I look forward to having epic battles with them. Especially the brachiosaurus!

I'm picking up the new book when it gets released. I've been playing WFB on and off since 4th edition. I have zero interest in AoS, so I'm fully onboard with trying to move to KoW.

I signed up for a local tournament so been playing since april...I already bought tons of undead for warhammer quest but then painted and based them...

Now I'm buying up dark ages mini's and making a romano-british looking force for kingdoms of men.

most of my gamer group bit hard and love kow (dwarfs and nature) but about 3 hate kow without playing, moan about AoS and go on about 8th edition warhammer. They got pretty nasty when I organised some of the other warhammer players to play KoW a few weeks back.

To end on a positive about four of us are now going to the national championships

I've got 3 full-ish armies I'm looking to field:

-An Arabian/French Legion-themed KoM army, made from Zvezda models bulked up to the right height on corkboard and focusing heavily on firearms and cannons, with lords on war elephants/scratchbuilt Dune-worms as support. They're painted, but were then boxed, and so need touching up, washing, basing, and sealing/protecting before they're ready to run with.

-I just picked up 120 of Warlord's Persian infantry, and plan on running a horde KoM army focusing with diorama bases to basically recreate Battle of Thermopylae, using the lone Spartan models, likely whatever I can scrounge from my Bones collection, as the "leader" models (Albeit facing the 'wrong' way)

-1500ish points of miscellaneous Undead, between a couple small Bag O' Zombies hordes from my WHFB days and additional Crazy Box skellies/ghouls/zombies. I also grabbed a Bag O' Skeletons a while back, and may end up painting them and running them along with the rest of the miscellaneous undead.

I've also got an itty-bitty 500ish-point Elven and 500-point Dwarven forces from various crazy boxes, which may end up being fielded as allies for a KoM list at some point.

Imagine the feeling when you position your tanks, engines idling, landing gear deployed for a low profile, with firing solutions along a key bottleneck. Then some fether lands a dreadnought behind them in a giant heat shielded coke can.

So I tried the game last night and I quite liked it. I played an opponent who normally loves games as detailed as possible - to the point of wanting Necromunda-level customization for every model in an army scale game - and he asked to play again.

In true WHFB fashion, though, I totally lost the game during deployment.

Haha, the same thing happened to my opponent today! He ran a very 'shooty' dwarf army, and for some reason he deployed expecting me to deploy on a hill diagonal to him - so I just set up in his flank.

There seems to be a fair few here from Warhammer Fantasy and Lord of the Rings. I'm sort of opposite, I've played 40k, but chose Kings of War over Fantasy as I wasn't interested in taking the time to learn ALL those rules - which probably wouldn't turn out to be all that balanced in the end anyway!

So now my brother and I are converting and painting a force of EM4 orcs and dwarves to use for Kings War, and we're enjoying ourselves so far.

Second game yesterday. Pic: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2ndfl1gttuie9r0/kow1.jpg?dl=0

This time I pulled off a surprise victory as my opponent got a lot of his stuff stuck in the forest.

I would say all units are good, and you can *almost* just take random stuff to fill out your list, but obviously having a battleplan is still an advantage.

I have a battle report on my blog where I tested the v1 rules using foam cutouts.

With v2 coming out and a local store having a big sale on their fantasy items, I bought a bunch of Empire stuff to use as KoM in KoW, and for use as humans in any other fantasy based games.

Just a few question from the battle report. You may have done all I mentioned below correctly, but I wanted to mention it as rarely do Dwarves take it in the shorts that badly.

If you guys counted the woods as difficult terrain you cannot move at the double through them (screaming through). Also, the Trolls seemed to have been setup in the woods, they would only have been able to move a normal move not at the double.

The greataxes on the left could also not have moved at the double until they did a normal move to get squared away facing forward.

The Gore riders on the left had to charge through woods, so their charges would have been hindered (-1)

As for tactics:
Near the end, get your king to countercharge the trolls while turning the Ironclads next to him to face the Gore riders charge. Your king should be able to go several rounds with the trolls before one or the other drops, but with 5 pts already on the Ironclads, they were pretty much done (but remember that for next time. A powerful hero can hold up a unit while you take care of other problems.

A weak hero like a standard bearer is just a speadbump and they can keep coming.

I am glad you enjoyed the system.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to remember all of that, as apparently there's some interest in KoW now that WHFB is gone.

Tell me about it! Of course, it was only a 1000 point game, and isn't KoW usually played at twice that?

I prefer 2000 points or larger, yeah! 3000 if you can get an 8x4.
