what is the best variant of the different inquisitors (zenos, hereticus, malleus).
I can see the different variants all being quite good, but overall, what is the best variant, especially for supporting a large blob of guardsmen.
happy wargaming,
-Mikey

Xenos Inquisitor probably has some of the most game changing wargear between their rad + psychotropic grenades and the plasma syphon. Throw one into a melee powerhouse unit and watch them tear apart the enemy.

GK player here just recently been adding in some Inquisitors for fun.
I've been enjoying my Ordos Xenos Inquisitor. Though I run him with my frontline usually with a Force Sword, Needle Pistol (love this gun.) 3 Servo skulls and psycocculum. Stick him in with my Purifier squads and either fly them in on a Vendetta or roll them forward in a rhino. I also usually give him power armor.
I also like to bring Coteaz. He's got a lot of nice special rules that help out a tonne. I could see some of them being particularly helpful in a guard blob. Re-rolling or forcing a re-roll for seize is nice and he also allows you to fire on targets arriving from reserves within range as many times as possible.
I'm looking into getting some Crusaders and Deathcult Assassins to help my GK with first turn deep strike plasma/grav. (I need a unit that can hang out near a comms relay)

Uh, not to be a stick in the mud, but that can't happen. Xenos Inquisitors cannot take psyocculums. Check the codex.

All flavours of inquisitor can work.
If supporting a big combined squad for a Guard Infantry Platoon.....hmm.
Any inquisitor grants Stubborn Ld10 for a pittance of points - although you could have a Ministorum Priest (giving actual Fearless) for the same, so that's more a welcome bonus than something to build the army around.
Inquisitors do have access to a good mix of support powers. It depends if you're after making the blob shooty (heavy weapons and front rank fire!) or assaulty (flamers, power axes and meltabombs).
For a shooty unit, an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor is a good call. Take a Psyocculum - because BS10 and Night Vision are awesome, and you'll have a viable target with a psyker in it more often than you'd think. Consider pairing with a Divination Psyker - if your opponent has psykers, Psyocculum makes the unit awesome. If they don't (or once you've shot them!), then they won't be able to deny prescience, which also makes the unit awesome.
For an assaulty unit, an Ordo Xenos inquisitor is good. Rad Grenades give the enemy -1T for a turn, which is awesome for a S3 army. You could take a divination psyker, but that's a bit of a waste as guard can get rerolls to hit easily and reliably with a priest (Zealot) - taking Sanctic Daemonology and hoping for Hammerhand might be worth it - after all, even if you don't get a useful power, you still get a force axe or force staff out of the deal.
The relics can be nice, too. The Grimoire of True Names is very target-specific (although daemons are more common these days with Malefic daemonology) but it's the Liber and the Tome that really do the business.
Liber Heresius is best for an assaulty blob- if only for the pretty reliable chance of scout, to give you an extra turn's movement.
Tome of Vethric is better for a shooty force - night vision versus dark eldar, tank hunter versus necrons, monster hunter versus tyranids. All suitable for shooting people down from a safe distance. Counterattack on orks is also good if someone breaks through, as the blob is still going to be your front line ahead of fragile fire support squads and command sections. Also - facing tyranids you get a double benefit; many synapse creatures are psykers (Psyocculum) and monstrous creatures (monster hunter). The Inquisitor is providing something like a 350% increase in firepower against such targets!

I use Coteaz and a Xenos in a guard blob to hilarious results.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

Inquisitors are great. I have used an inquisitor hereticus as a grenade hero with the liber hereticus to great effect.
Put the liber hereticus inquisitor in a Land Raider Crusader with either assault terminators or a Crusader Squad. Scout the landraider 12" before the game begins. Also make sure to bring the servo skulls to deny someone from deep striking right next to your land raider with meltaguns on first turn.
Another thing you can do is bring the psyocculum for BS10 against psykers and stick with any unit that has an orbital bombardment attack. BS10 orbital bombardment aint nothin to fool with.
But I love the inquisition codex. So many cool toys to use and play with, it's just too bad the model range isn't really there to support it. I mean you can find the models, but alot of them are metal and order-only.

Ordos Xenos Inquisitor for Conversion Beamer --- throwing him on top of my FOR is fun, beaming down on enemies from atop his tower.
The Inq codex is very fun though.
10 bodies with storm bolters for 70pts is my fav unit from it.

Servo-Skulls only restrict enemy Scout Moves and Infiltrate Deployments - they wont do anything to stop a Deep Strike on the 1st Turn. Still very useful to prevent enemy units scouting/infiltrating up into range of course, and the added bonus of scattering 1D6 less on your own Blasts/Deep Strikes can be real nice if you can use it.

Oops lol, you're absolutely right. What I meant was the ulumeanthi Plasma Syphon - it's pretty helpful against plasma centric armies. Thanks for catching that!
