Don't know what's this all about, but whatever: https://doctorwhotimevortex.com/products/the-return-of-doctor-mysterio

Warlord are delighted to announce our next Doctor Who release based on characters from the upcoming BBC 2016 Christmas special, The Return Of Doctor Mysterio...

The first new episode in twelve months sees the Doctor and the previously decapitated Nardole (Matt Lucas taking on the companion role, now thankfully with his head reattached) arrive in present day New York. They team up with reporter Lucy Fletcher and the mysterious superhero the Ghost to fight aliens with a fondness for brain-swapping.

These two beautifully sculpted pewter figures feature the Ghost as portrayed by Justin Chatwin, and Dr Sim, played by Aleksandar Jovanovic.

This set will be shipped late January 2017 - Pre-Order Today!

Watch the episode on Christmas Day at 5:45pm on BBC One.

I'm not much for a miniatures game based on Dr. Who (despite loving the show, except for the latest doctor), but I feel the need for an army of Jadoon, Daleks and Cybermen.

DOCTOR WHO INTO THE TIME VORTEX: AN INTERVIEW WITH PAUL SAWYER (PART 1)
December 21, 2016 -
By Alan Huntung

Last week I met with our head of product design, Paul, for a chat about the Doctor Who range and posed him some questions. Here are his responses:
Q. Tell us a bit about the history of warlord games and what led you to secure the who licence?
Warlord Games was established by myself and John Stallard in 2007. We had both previously worked for Games Workshop before being made redundant, so we set up the company (Warlord Games) together and our first release were 28mm plastic Romans, a legionaries boxed set. No one had really made historical figures in plastic before! We actually made our own enquiries about obtaining the Doctor Who licence, and after a lot of time had passed, we were granted it. We have the licence to cover all 50+ years of the series so possibilities are endless.

Q. Can you talk about the process of producing a figure, from initial choice getting the figures approved to the design/ manufacture process?
Our Doctor Who figures are all designed and manufactured here in Nottingham. In terms of figure choice, we are trying to put out a range which encompasses all eras of Doctor Who. Figures have to be approved by the BBC and sometimes this takes a long time! By approval, we mean the likeness has to be approved by the original actor and if that actor is no longer with us, often their estate has to approve it. Billie Piper had her figurine in her possession for months before she approved it, and Kylie Minogue has had her Astrid figure for a while now. Busy actors mean we have to wait longer to manufacture them!
The likeness has to be approved by the original actor and if that actor is no longer with us, often their estate has to approve it.
At the moment, we have dozens of figures awaiting approval, some are approved far quicker than others. In terms of design, with the forthcoming cybermen boxed set, to take an example, the same sculptor has designed all ten figures in the box, which makes the figures consistent in design.

Q. Would you consider producing a scenery/terrain/battleground range to go with the collection e.g. a scale TARDIS or console room set?
For now we are concentrating on releasing as many boxed sets of figures as we can, and our first game release. We have been talking about a TARDIS, however, so that will be produced sooner rather than later. I like the idea of limited edition dioramas, like Mickey Smith being sucked into the Auton bin. (At this point, I suggest to Paul it has a burping sound chip included!)

Q. Any forthcoming figures you can talk about?
The Tetraps are coming next, followed by the Cybermen set. We have a Papal Mainframe set in the pipeline, and the Sea Devils look fantastic, based on the original 1970’s designs. Plastic Daleks and 2013 style Cybermen in their own boxes. The 9th Doctor and Companions release will include 9, Rose (Different sculpt to the 10th Doctor set), Jackie, Mickey and Captain Jack as he appeared in The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances. The 11th Doctor and Companions set will include The 11th Doctor, Amy and Rory based on their first episode costumes (My eyes widen at the thought of the police woman costume adorning Amy) and of course River.

Q. Do you have any advice for collectors who have never tried out war gaming but want to get into the hobby?
Buy the forthcoming game! Our Dalek and Cyberman figures are in and they look fantastic. The cards look amazing and the game is having another play test soon (This Friday, look out for pictures soon after) and the final box design is being worked on.

That's a shame, both the Heresy and Crooked Dice ones seem to be gone. Instead we have these Warlord ones which are quite poor. The 10th Doctor and Wilf are horribly 2D, like they were cast in the 90s. The posing of the Wilf looks especially awkward. The plastic Daleks look good but I'd prefer original series ones, and the Harlequin ones were pretty poor.

The Tetraps look ok, and no one has done them before.

No box of Cybus style Cybermen yet? Damn. I guess I'll make due with the Nightmare in Silver style, but I really hope we get more than just that one Cybus style one that's in the big 10 figure box.

If that Mysterio set is as Good as the renders suggest then it is a vast improvement over the previous two Doctor sets, I guess we will wait and see. I just hope that the future Tennant's and Calpaldi's are a lot better.

The actor approval thing is odd, if I were them most of those sculpts would have been dismissed out of hand. That said there is presidence in that the 5 inch action figure line is often pretty terrible as well.

I'm actually quite happy with my Tenth Doctor and Companions set that I purchased to paint for my girlfriend as her birthday present. The Tennant model wasn't as bad as the pics make him look and all of the other models were recognizable as who they were intended to be.

Are they amazing sculpts? Maybe not. There are some not-Doctor Who models out there which are better. That said, there are a whole lot of non-licensed models out there that look a lot worse.

Wasn't sure if this should warrant it's own topic or not but the Doctor Who miniatures game "Exterminate!" is being released next month (limited availability at Salute this weekend).

Contents Images spoiler'd -

Spoiler:

Starter if £35 or £37 (I thought was £35 but they charged me £2 more). The game contains cards for all the previously released characters and monsters. Forthcoming boxes will contain the required cards instead.

Then coming next month (not at Salute) there are two more expansion sets -

And the two metal models from those sets -

For me the face doesn't look quite right and the pose is slightly off. I remember a promotional image from when that episode first aired showing her in that pose so I think they directly based the model on that. Some of the previous dodgy looking models have looked significantly better with different paint jobs.

They are working on a Master box set which will contain a model of every version of the Master from the show (excluding the 8th Doctor TV movie which they don't have the rights to), so hopefully that sculpt is better.

I find that they have done a good job on the aliens / monster sculpts, it's just the humans that are not quite right. The studios paint jobs are also not helping as some of the humans actually look pretty good with different paint jobs.

Just got an email with the pre-orders for the new Doctor Who game and a couple things struck me.

- The core game does not come with a Doctor figure?

- What happened to the Eleventh Doctor and his companions?

- Its 38mm!?

- Some of the figures are...

From what I have been reading up -

The base game was meant to come with a metal 12th Doctor but they decided not to include him due to Capaldi leaving and to keep the cost down.

11th Doctor is coming. The current plans for Doctor releases seem to be a 9th doctor box with Rose, Mikey, Jack and Rose' Mum. A 11th a doctor set with Amy and Rory from first appearance. A 10th Doctor Christmas special box with 10th Doctor in a tux, Astrid and heavenly host figures. A 8th Doctor box in his 50th mini episode costume and will also come with other models including War Doctor and sister hood of Kharn. A Doctor box set with every Doctor. Think they also mentioned a box set for the 6th Doctor.

Plastic troop box wise they have mentioned Unit and Sontaran boxes planned.

From a scale standpoint I saw a photo of them next to Batman miniature game models and the scale matches exactly. I am not certain why they went for the bigger scale.

Some of the models are exceptional, others are lacking to say the least.

I think the Daleks and Davros look good, and depending upon the game itself £35 seems like a decent entry level price. But will this get dropped like their Terminator game did?

Unlike that Terminator movie, which was supposed to kick off a big arc and more movies or something but didn't, this isn't a gak franchise to work with for Warlord, plus a whole lot safer as this will sell regardless.

Fair point, just a shame that a fair few of the sculpts have not been up to snuff. I also assume that this is a very expensive licence so there is more reason to get behind it and try and make it a continued success.

It will be sink or swim for Warlord, as the BBC can always look elsewhere if its too gakky. Pity really, as Crooked Dice had some excellent sculpts.

Dear BBC, if you are reading this, please look into them when you're done with Warlord.

The art and production design for the non miniature components of this game look awful; very bland and very un-doctor who like - wheres the fun and eccentricity. Was looking forward to this but am disappointed with the shoddiness.
