Subject: How messed up is the Emperor really?
|
 |

In some fluff he's described as living in constant agony, barely holding on, and unable to communicate with the world other than in the vaguest manner through Tarot cards, which is even then uncomfirmed.
In other fluff he's been known to be able to pause time locally and have a normal (telepathic) conversation with a visitor.
So, is the Emperor actually in better shape than is normally let on?
I'm not doubting he's trapped on the Throne, and his body is ruined, but is he still playing an active role in affairs, but just from the shadows? It so, that makes him possibly complicit in the Imperial Cult by not speaking against it, which despite going against the Imperial Creed, has ironically been a major part of what's kept the Imperium functioning and Chaos at bay.

His soul was severed from his body. In that sense, he is already dead. The reason he instructed Dorn to rig the Golden Throne up as life support is because his body still acts as a powerful conduit for his power in the material realm.

That's not what I'm asking though. My main question is how able is he to dictate affairs and communicate with the material realm in an explicit fashion, rather than through Tarot cards and such?
Is he genuinely able to have conversations with anyone who turns up to the Golden Throne, and manifest his powers locally, or is he genuinely severed from mortal affairs and living a life of agony and unrelenting work keeping Daemons at bay and the Astronomican running?
I have a theory that he's not as compromised as thought, and the notion of him being essentially severed from the mortal world is something that's convenient to him for others to think. He's possibly got more covert control over the Imperium than people think.

If you're referring to Jaq Draco's conversation that was not a normal conversation. It actually implied he had split personalities at least partially as a result of having to focus on so many different things whilst on the Golden Throne.
He may be imbuing certain followers (like some Living Saints and the Legion of the Damned) with special powers but as far as I know it's ambiguous.

That thing, ugh.
The Emperor was wounded, severely but not beyond the power of medical technology at the time. He was enshrined in the Golden Throne to hold the webway rift under the palace shut rather than to preserve his life specifically, although it did perform that role until the surgeons were ready to operate on him.
Then the three remaining Terran Councillors decided that actually, they were probably better off without the Emperor running the show, and called off the medical operation to get him back on his feet. They renamed themselves the High Lords of Terra and declared that it was the Emperor's will that they rule.

Whether retconned or not, you gotta remember that every point of view in the 40k universe is unreliable. In the Grimdark of the future there is no objective truth. Only points of view with agendas.
This is most likely a deliberate choice by the creative guys to allow you to identify with whatever faction you like. Ambiguity creates a loophole for you to like any contender, even ones so obviously foul as Chaos and Tyranids. (And spend money!!!)
For example, 'the whole fething mess is so dysfunctional that I wanna play bugs. The sooner we can devour the whole mess the better... So I love me some bugs!"
My two cents.

The better source is the Thorian Sourcebook. Four individuals, 'trusted servants of the Emperor' gathered to discuss what was to be done with the Big E. Promeus and Moriana argue for the Emperor's revival and the other two argue that He had ascended and should not be interfered with. Promeus and Moriana go off to find ways to achieve their aim, the other two, with the backing of the Primarchs, form the first iteration of the Inquisition with the aim of stopping the schemes of Promeus and Moriana.
According to the Realm of Chaos books then the Emperor's physical body is dead, save for a handful of cells which are kept alive and tether the Emperor's soul to the mortal realm. It is also said that, via the might of his psychic will, the Emperor was able to speak normally for a short while after he was placed within the Golden Throne before falling silent forever. The manner in which the Emperor communicates after this is generally via the Tarot.

Ok, I know I'm brand new to the Lore of this stuff. And most of my knowledge comes from here, the wiki and the lexicanum site, with a fair bit from 1d4chan. But genuinely what's wrong with it? It puts parts of the lore (although I know enough to know most of what it says doesn't quite work that way) in a fun and easy way to remember, and has actually had a few laughs from me after watching it since I saw it posted here.

It's incredibly simplistic and one-sided if I recall correctly. Just watched an episode. Also contains wrong information. As for the wiki site, don't use it. It contains a great deal of fan fiction stated as fact. Same with 1d4chan and its incessant exaggeration. Lexicanum is usually okay if the sources are cited though it does have some mistakes from time to time.

Yeah, I heard the wiki was pretty unreliable, but that's the problem with wikis. I tend to try and find an article of the same thing on all 3 and compare which facts and details match up and usually these are ok. Sure, it's no replacement for having read all the books and literature published by the black library, but for now at least it's where the majority of my information is coming from. Especially as some of the sources I've seen cited on lexicanum are old rulebooks/codecies that I would never buy if not for the lore contained within. Also reading as much as I can here.

If it's the Text-to-Speech vid, I stopped watching when the Emperor did not know the GK existed. Which is a case of the writer discarding background in the setting for laughs.

I generally do the same thing, but some people on this site (not naming any names) are so stubborn that they will maintain their position in an argument, despite not citing any sources, and you citing three others and half a dozen threads.

I remember that, i also remember not being particularly surprised. My Inquisitors where always in the "Rez the Big E" camp as he would seriously start slapping people when he woke up.
Back to the OP, it is assumed that the Emperor is simply using his body as a Psychic focus for the material realm so he can screw with stuff. Otherwise he is most likely an extremely powerful Warp Entity bordering on Godhood, he just hasnt figured out how do to all the things the other gods do yet, but when that happens....

He's dead. End of story. I don't think he has any effect on the material world. Only what people think he does.
aka: it's easy to say that today is raining because the Emepror is not happy.
oh I forgot: this is my opinion. No source and whatnot. I may be stupid, but I ALWAYS find that what are wrote in books of 40k is only half true (ok ok, i know it's a work of fiction, but all the fluff I read seem like fiction in a fictional world, if you catch my drift). All the books that talk about the imperium seem written by some inquisition fanatic (and same apply to each respective faction). So for me, when a ''fact'' is stated in a w40k books, you have to take it with a bit of salt, because I feel like it's the way it's suppose to be taken. No universal truth, just a maelstorm of hint that point in random direction so people can create their own fiction in their mind.

Also, the Eldar believe the Legions of the Damned to be Imperial Daemons, and I'm more inclined to believe Eldrad Ulthran than any Imperial records.

Thats freakin sweet. Also there are Imperium people who believe that too, though they dont use the word Daemon, usually its Blessed of the Emperor or something, but the fact that two sources agree on this does lend it some weight.
