I am honestly at a loss for words here.

I have no problems with this.

No different from Ayer's Rock changing to Uluru years ago. If they had support from across the state, shouldn't they be allowed to change the name of their mountain, no matter if Ohio is kicking up a stink? I mean if Ohio was renaming something that was named for an Alaskan should they have to stop because Alaska complained, if there was support from Senators and the Governor (the assumption is made that they represent the people alright)?

If Obama gets agreement and support from the two republican Senators and the non partisan (with Republican leanings) govern I can't see how this is an issue at all. Alaska can do what they want with their mountain.

And it's still your favourite mountain, it's still got the name the locals gave it a long time ago, and quite frankly this all seems to be an excuse to blame Obama for something.

I have no issue with this since it's something Alaska has wanted since 1975. I'm surprised it took this long to do it.

does it change your mind that the mountain wasn't originally named in honor of him?

It was named McKinley after he received the nomination for president, by a gold miner who favored the gold standard championed by McKinely, as opposed to the Silver Standard platform of William Jennings Bryan.

You can also argue that it's a bit rude to rename a mountain that had a name for centuries. It's not like Obama is calling it Barack's Rock or something, he's restoring the original name.

Why did we name a mountain in Alaska after him?

Ohio can rename one of their landmarks to McKinley if it's such a big friggin' deal.

Isn't everything all around us renamed though and we all go on about our lives not caring how rude it is? I am on the cusp here...part of me can feel for the Alaskans right to do what they wish with their mountain but part of me just can't stand the message it sends to the rest of the world - that America is weak and doesn't even care for it's own heritage.

As an outsider, it's not Obama who is making people in the USA look bad in this situation.


Sure is lucky that your respective houses have passed so many jobs bills, fixed your economy, medical services, the situation in the Middle East etc etc so effectively that they can waste time by strutting around commenting on things like this.

Or maybe it's that we really care about our heratige and want to to be named what it was originally?

And, let's face it, I'm sure quite a lot of Americans didn't even know the mountain was named after a president until they heard/read about this now.

Presumably as soon as this gets milked on AM radio and Daily Breit Limbaugh until the cow is dry, the right wing can go back to their lobbying efforts to stick Reagan's name on every airport, post office, outhouse, and loose dime in sight.

The phrase "making a mountain out of a molehill" has never seemed more apt at any outrage over this. That said, this thread has given me the word 'poutrage' which I will happily use henceforth.

There are very few things that Obama does that I agree with. This is one of those few.

I betcha most Americans knew what and where Mt. McKinley was even if they didn't know who he was. Oh well - it seems I'm the only one here has a problem with this.

I suspect the average American could not name more than 3 mountains, total.
