Yeah 1 million planets but the population on average per planet is what is in dispute really.
ForgeWorlds have upwards of 20 billion
Hive Worlds have upwards of 200 billion
There are loads of agri and backwater worlds with about a billion each
Being conservative let's say on average, an Imperial Planet has 10 billion people, that would mean with the Imperium's 1 million worlds that the Population of Humanity is around 10 Quadrillion people.

No, it's millions of worlds and less than one space marine per world.

Only in the last 70 years. Small gap in the big picture of things, and don't forget the Cold War, where the allies and soviets passively aggressively fought one another in proxy wars.

Cut to some convenience store where a giant man, glowing with blinding light, shoves groceries into a cheap plastic bag.
The Tyranids are not anywhere close to our galaxy. They were attracted by the astronomicon, which won't be fired up for another 28,000 years. Even then, it takes ~9000 years for the hive fleets to reach the galaxy.

You're forgetting all sorts of worlds with minuscule populations:
Mining worlds with conditions to harsh for large populations
Prison worlds with just a prison and little else
Feral worlds with just a few hundred thousand living like paleolithic people
Research worlds with just a research outpost
Forbidden worlds with just a security team
It is very difficult to get an accurate estimate of Imperial numbers.

The fact remains, the "canon" claim is one million worlds in the Imperium.
If you use the map posted a few times in this thread, you'll note that the yellow dot is the size of a sub-sector. Put a dozen of those together, you've got a sector. Put half a dozen of those together, you have a segmentum. There's, what, six Segmentums in the Imperium? That leaves a fethload of space that Mankind has never, ever visited.

On the side, I do laugh a little - that the masses insist on the fiction that the galaxy is full of habitable worlds. I'm all for the idea of a frontier, and exploration but it is silly when looking at just the improbability of those variables required to sustain life.
Of course 'terra forming' is the band aid, but that's sort of marginalizing the big big variables to alter especially since many seem to be without sustained artificial augmentation to the atmosphere. /shrug
Something you need to realise about 40k: The "galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man" contains roughly one million worlds.
Compared to the number of worlds in the milky way? That's practically nothing at all. That's a statistical blip. Less than one percent of one percent of the planets in the 40k galaxy are inhabited.
Not to mention taking into account the number of those planets that aren't human-habitable but are home to non-humans. Necrons primarily inhabit dead or at the very least inhospitable worlds. Eldar don't live on planets at all*. Orks, who claim the most planets, can survive on worlds whose gravity or atmosphere make them uninhabitable to humans - heck, an Ork population could act as terraformers since they breed their own ecosystem - one that is not reliant on piddling things like a high-oxygen atmosphere or an existing biosphere.
All that taken into account, the Eldar are not the 'dominant race in the galaxy'. The Eldar Empire is the size of the Eye of Terror, with a few outlying colonies that form what are now called Exodite Worlds.
The dominant race in the galaxy is, as it has been since the end of the War in Heaven, the Orks. Of all the races in the galaxy, they are the most adaptable to hostile environments, the most expansionist, and the fastest-breeding.
Edit: * OK, Exodites, but you get the point.
Depends on the source, other numbers for the total of Imperial planets has gone into the billions. Although that's still incredibly tiny.
I've never seen it said the Imperium has billions of worlds. It's always "a million". IIRC in some of the HH books they said 2 million, implying that due to the Heresy and 10,000 years of war 50% of Imperial worlds have been destroyed.

Isn't that 1million number based on fancy wording, not actual "there are 1 million planets in the imperium"? I don't think it was ever meant as a way to say how many planets they control, more to say that SMs are very rare.

Wait, wait. So Orks might be responsible for there being a larger number of habitable worlds out there for mankind to attempt to claim. Interesting idea. Looking at the 3rd Edition rulebook fluff section on page 113 The Dominion of Man "The human galaxy is a complex society of countless billions of people and more than a million worlds... Despite the development of warp travel many worlds lie years or decades from their neighbours."
Inside front cover of the 6th Edition Rulebook "For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods and the master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies."

Maps of the galaxy aside, if the Eldar really existed their Farseers would probably know of our existence, location and our role in the Eldar future. If they considered us a threat they would have exterminated us. If they considered us useful they would probably have visited us in an effort to shape our development to their liking.
With the Eldar at the height of their Empire in 2015 they might well consider us not worth worrying about. At this point, as I recall, they're more involved with their inward-looking culture and increasing decadence.
Orks would attack if they jumped into our system, but with the Eldar at the peak of power the pointy-ears would slap down any sizable Greenskin Waaagh as soon as they detected it. Preferably before it got close to Eldar space. If the Orks did come to call in decent numbers Earth would be done, of course.
I agree with your assumptions about Tau and Necrons. Tyranids are probably on the way, what with their slower-than-Imperial interstellar travel and the huge distance between galaxies, but you're right, we've for about 30+ millennia before their vanguard arrives.
My two cents.

Don't the Eldar Farseers develop among the Craftworld Eldar later on when the Eldar Empire is doomed and they've left it to try and break from the path of decadence? I thought that was part of why the Craftworld Eldar had all the psychic powers and the Dark Eldar did not.
