Indeed. I'm all for the police having a range of options. If you can include energy efficient, compact choices for roles where intimidation is not required, then that's definitely a positive step, especially if it can be done without picking the pocket of the taxpayer.

Gotta love kneejerk OPs who use a title that has a very heavy, pre-determined conclusion to ram down your throats. How dare the police accept a car that isn't some sort of armored SWAT van? How will they get into explosive chases against ISIS ninjas then?

Seriously, most cop work is about giving parking tickets, patrolling neighborhoods and visiting schools and the like. And for those jobs, this is a better vehicle than a full cruiser. It's not like the old cars are being replaced for roles where their capabilities make sense.

Bicycle, motorcycle and horses fill specific rolls. The BMWs are not designed integrate with "mobile infantry" rolls. They're going to be patrolling the city as is currently one with standard ICE cars. My issue is they're bringing in two door coupes to fill a roll meant for four door sedans. And if you think they're not replacing old sedans with these then you are not paying attention. These cars are expensive and LAPD doesn't have that kind of budget unless if they stop ordering new sedans or other equipment and sell off older cars instead of repairing them.

Now, since it seems people are deliberately misconstruing my position, I am not opposed to buying hybrids or electric cars for a city's police fleet. I am opposed to publicity stunts like LA buying pricey coupes instead of more practical sedans given the roll that cars are meant to play in urban policing. I'm also not saying it is an issue that needs the militia to grab pitchforks and torches. I'm just saying that LA can no brain, they has the dumb.

The initial cost of an electric car is high but running costs are significantly less than conventional vehicles. Also, the LAPD are leasing the cars from BMW, not buying them.

Its not so much the 'green initiative' part or the 'intelligent thinking' part that makes it heavy handed though. Its the 'trumps' in the middle of them.

My issue is the case of how fast the cars can go, how far they can go without re-fueling, etc. Who's to say somebody wouldn't just decide to outrun them or outlast them? I mean it's hard to give somebody a ticket even if they could just speed right by you.

Why do they need to chase somebody? There are other things which the police do. If they see a traffic violation they can get a plate and/or description and radio it to other units to intercept. Also, not sure if it's the same in the US but over here electric charging points for cars are becoming much more common.

It's pretty bad policy to get into a high speed chase for a parking or speeding ticket, and most police departments wisely no longer engage in high speed chases unless it's totally unavoidable.

Although, more progressive type cities like LA, SF and NYC will have more electric charging ports than other places in the US.

Questioning this purchase because the cars can't engage in high speed pursuits is about as sensible as questioning the purchase and deployment of tasers because you wouldn't want to use them against a bank robber with an assault rifle.

This line is a huge strawman to what seems to b the OP's actual position: You can't get perps into/out of two door cars as easily as you can a 4 door car. Therefore it is dumb to buy or lease expensive 2 door cars.

Well... If they get green car, they might as well get larger green car so you can do more things with same car, right? That way you can do work of two cars with one car.
Yay for versatility.

Unless of course that 2 door car is cheaper than a 4 door over its lifetime thanks to less cost in actually running it. And not every police job involves arresting people, as pointed out earlier.

This thread is a perfect example of why this subforum is absolutely terrible and why Yakface really should just shut it.

"lol look at this stupid vehicle, can't even put perps in the back"
"you don't out perps in the back of LAPD golf carts, bikes, motocycles, scooters, segways, or other non-patrol vehicles"
"disregard, repeat"

The idea that these tiny utility vehicles are replacing standard patrol squad cars for frontline policing as far as I can tell was wholly invented by the OP, as I've re-read the article a few times and it's certainly not present there. If you read another article on it, such as this one here, you find out that they're not even all for the police department, for chrissakes - the 160 vehicles are being split among LAPD, LAFD, Department of Water & Power, and General Services departments.

But of course, that doesn't give you the sweet, sweet hit of today's liberal poutrage. I assume the next post is screaming about how you can't put out a 3 alarm fire with one of these either and how the libs are rooking the LAFD for buying them.

Just going off the UKs job info:

1) interviewing witnesses and suspects, preparing crime reports and taking statements (if your job is to just go to X house and interview the owner then 2 doors works)
2) giving evidence in court (ie driving to and from the courtroom)
3) visiting schools to give talks (unless you're expecting to arrest the children/staff?)
4) policing large public events, concerts and demonstrations (you're there to have a presence, any suspects in crimes will be taken away in vans rather than in individual patrol cars to maintain the amount of police at the event)

Again, the OP's point was you can't put perps into a 2 door car easily. Cost of running the car is easily offset by ability to do your job safely (for the cop and the perp). I don't give a damn about 'not every police job involves arresting people'. I just wanted to point out how folks like Sebster (and others) are completely misrepresenting the OPs objection to the 2 door cars.

And if we really want to get into it, electric and hybrid cars don't necessarily have better 'lifetime costs' especially with gas prices less than $4 per gallon. Take away federal subsidies to purchase prices and gas/diesel vehicles do even better.

We all know what OPs point is, which is why we are pointing out that it doesn't matter that you can't fit someone in the back seat because that's not what it will be used for and that there are jobs besides arresting people that the police do, all of which are a good use for a vehicle like that.

If I would start a post talking about "the new F-35 is stupid, it can't even operate underwater and hide out in the arctic with nuclear ballistic missiles" then most (reasonable) people would probably point out that complaining that the F-35 isn't a ballistic submarine is stupid because the Navy already has balistic submarines and that this plane will be used for a different job that a submarine.
