Warhammer: 40,000: Eternal Crusade has come up with a theme for the Chaos Space Marines. The composers behind the themes in the game explained, that while the other factions (bar Eldar) have a theme that most of the fans can agree to (Marines have knightly and epic music, Orks have drums and traditional instruments), most Chaos Space Marine fans wanted something heavy metal. This, as the composer explained, wouldn't fit with the theme of the game, and decided to go a different route. Their version of the Chaos theme has a focus on warped instruments and dissonance:

To me, that's better than any heavy metal soundtrack you could ever come up with. When I listen to that, I think of Chaos Marines, of unholy legions of supersoldiers and evil forces, something now heavy metal song has ever done to me before. Furthermore, this theme fits far better with the general tone of the setting and the game, I feel.

How do you feel about it? Would you've wanted something different?

I think you could class that as symphonic metal.
Which was my inspiration to finally starting a metal noise marine force.(Technically it was symphonic death metal.)

Love it. I think it fits them perfectly. Plus I've never been much of a fan of "metal for chaos" sounds.

Agreed. While I appreciate the 80s roots that 40k has (some of the old art is still my favorite) I think it's grown a little past metal as the best genre to represent it.

Completely agree with you guys. I feel the setting has grown too much to be the quirky 80'ies setting it once was - It is a deep and vast setting now, with a lot of feel to it, and this theme really enunsuate that!

Metal does not work in building atmosphere. Like films - horror films with a metal soundtrack are the wurst.

This is much better. Though does sound like a videogame score.

ITT: People saying "I hate when Chaos uses Metal for their soundtrack" while upvoting a Symphonic Doom Metal track representing Chaos.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I think the fact that I have no idea what that is indicative enough to most that clearly my definition of "metal" and the genre I'm referring to are quite different than what you just said.

I honestly have no idea what "Symphonic Doom Metal" is, nor do I really care to. That's not the metal I'm referring to, and to me, the sound of the OP's video is not metal. I understand that I could be technically incorrect in saying whatever this sound is is not metal, but to me it's not.

Hey the soundtrack to the new Mad Max was pretty good.

Fit the atmosphere perfectly, whatever it was...

I'm glad they didn't fall into the 'wargamer = metalhead' mentality that I've seen in pretty much every FLGS I've ever visited.

It is metal though, though its understandable that you didn't realise it was as its from a quite niche subgenre.
I think people just need to realise that metal is quite broad, and by saying that it wouldn't suit something based on one style is basically stereotyping.

I was always partial to the DoW 1 Chaos theme for the overwhelming sense of despair it gave but this is pretty good too.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Give this man a goddamn cookie - despair. I don't understand why that aspect of the Chaos Marines is lost in so many cases, because it's simply one of the most important and most thematically cool parts of the Chaos Marine lore. They're goddamn mortal servants of Chutulhu and Friends, legions of ealous cultists dedicated to Hell itself - There's a lot of creepy gak in the 40k universe, but I were a citizen of the Imperium, I would fear a Traitor Legion invasion the most. Not only are they warped and fethed up beyond belief, they've also got it out for me, specifically, simply for being loyal. I imagine Chaos fleets could win entire wars by simply making it known that they are coming, as the panic and despair that would create would soften up whatever world they decend upon.

None of you guys have listened or heard a Good Metal theme then.

Lots of Metal soundtrack can build up Atmosphere, lots of metal Soundtrack fit perfectly the theme of unholy supersoldiers of Doom.

Lots of Metal Bands songs are about 40k, just like Bolt Thrower was in the 80's, like Death Dealer nowadays and many others.

Disturbed-Warrior track is wonderfull for a WE/Khorne warrior theme.

The track they did for Chaos is nice, if they had added guitar shreds and some heavy base, it would be classed as Symphonic/Doom Metal and contraty to believe its a genre that is well appriciated.

It doesn't change the fact that many of us doesn't like good Metal either. This symphonic... Whatever is much more thematically interesting than metal to us non-metal lovers.

It's not even that. War gamers for some reason generally are very gung ho about forcing metal into some things. I just don't think it fits as well. It's a personal taste.

I actually enjoy metal. My first concert I ever went to was an Iron Maiden / Dream Theatre one. It's not my favorite genre of music (I'm a country boy) but I enjoy listening to Pantera and old metal bands. I enjoy listening to new age metal bands as well. But I don't like it in the 40k context and I think this Sympho whatever stuff fits pretty darn well.

In short, I'm an ignorant metal traditionalist who only recognizes what I grew up with metal to be as actually being metal.

I honestly do not feel this theme goes far enough. There are far darker examples of music (non-metal even) in existence than this, and if there was ever a time to use it a chaos theme is it.

Example: Laibach Nova Akropola (album)

Laibach is... not as dark as people make them out to be, since they're extremely, heavily, insanely satirical.

Though, by God, the *right* Laibach track would be incredible for various factions in 40k. Laibach tracks could cover everyone everywhere!

Yeah, I get that they are largely satire. Their early work is a far cry from the tongue in cheek later work however. Nova Akropola as an album is not exactly lighthearted.

Ultimately though all music is subjective, this stuff is what the grimdark future sounds like to me.
