Spoiler:

Soon "I read it for the articles" will be more believable.

The iconic men's magazine Playboy said Monday that it is planning to drop fully nude female photography from its pages.

The news, first reported by The New York Times, is bound to send shock waves through the magazine industry, since Playboy has been a part of American popular culture since its debut in 1953.

The magazine's redesign, which will reportedly take place next March, appears to be a reaction to the ever-growing accessibility of online pornography.

"You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free," Playboy's chief executive Scott Flanders told The Times. "It's just passé at this juncture."

Playboy executives did not immediately respond to CNNMoney requests for further comment.

The revolutionary publication, which was founded by Hugh Hefner, told The Times that "Playboy will still feature women in provocative poses" but no longer fully nude.

Social media pointed out that the removal of nude photography may help boost the magazine's other known elements.

"The Playboy Interview has long been one of the greatest columns in the magazine world," Politico media reporter Alex Weprin tweeted. "In some ways the rest of the magazine held it back."

As for young men going through puberty everywhere, they will now have to actually read Playboy for the articles.

"Don't get me wrong, 12-year-old me is very disappointed in current me," Cory Jones, Playboy's top editor explained to the paper.

CNNMoney (New York) October 12, 2015: 10:10 PM ET

Huh...I suppose with so much porn on the internet, it isn't really needed, but still seems like a strange change of things.

I do like Mr. Jones' last line on the article though.

Eh, what's the difference? They doctor the images so much now with Photoshop and editing it wasn't like you were seeing the real girl nude anyways.

And besides, playful lingerie and stuff matches up with the image Playboy sets up for itself anyways.

Call me old-fashioned but I actually like the Playboy style of nude photography which is more cheesecake or pinup than pornographic.

I would have thought there is space for the artistic presentation of the nude female form, between the 'lad mag' style and the hard-on porn style.

I am old enough to remember the headlines when Playboy did its first full frontal nude, which was in 1972.

All that being said I don't think I have bought a copy for at least 10 years, so I shall miss it only from a theoretical angle.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I sense a coming void on my barber shops magazine rack. Sure people can look at dirtier stuff on iphones while they wait but there's a certain timeless quality about magazines and papers at the barbershop. Going there is old school and it's like stepping into a living time capsule from the 50's.

Also I don't think I could trust a car mechanic that didn't chain smoke in a dingy little shop and have at least one decade old pin up on his tool box or locker. A clean well lit shop with right out of college age techs, that's madness.

It makes sense I suppose, porn is free online and as such they need move more towards a "male romance novel" type of magazine to stand out. It would probably be better if they re-branded completely into that market, but I guess they want to preserve the name which has some clout.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

Having browsed some 60s era Playboys not that long ago, the articles are the highlight, more than the semi-nude cuties.

The articles, and some of the short stories in the earlier days, were always the highlight of any Playboy magazine.

Americans seem to overlook the debt they owe to Hugh Hefner. The man has been a champion for defending 1st amendment rights for decades.

It's called Erotica (though Erotica and Porn are typically treated interchangeably online... so I hear ). Unfortunately, Playboy might find that that too is very readily accessible on the internet (Again, so i hear ).

I can understand the change. I used to buy the magazine, oh, about ten to fifteen years ago. Sure, the first thing I looked at was the nudie pics, but I spent far more time reading the jokes, the comics, and the articles.

Will Playboy be able to retake its old position as a quality mag that interviews major celebrities and publishes original fiction from authors like Ray Bradbury? We'll see.

It's not like it was ever very raunchy. An old mate bought Playboys second-hand so he could practice drawing nude women and the shop owner was just surprised. Why would a young man buy a mag full of mostly pinups when he could have a stack of other mags where they show everything?

What's funny is that, as much as "reading it for the articles" is something of a joke, there is a surprising number of famous journalists and writers who have been published in Playboy over the years.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Some of the articles in the 70's were seriously good. I remember 14 year old me reading quite a few pieces of quality journalism post fap and being pleasantly surprised.

Playboy was always very different than the other skin-mags. The articles were actually usually very good and it had interesting comics.

But the main difference was always the way the nudity was portrayed. Hustler and Co will always be the go-to when you want penetration and women with wide open legs spreading their goods and using whatever toys in whatever way you desire. It leaves nothing to the imagination and it always seemed less concerned about "art" and more focused on just getting that money shot.

Playboy was always more artful, less explicit, and that is really what set it apart IMO. It's why more celebrities are inclined to do an "art" shoot for Playboy instead of spreading it wide open for any of the other magazines.

It's an end of an era, that's for sure.

Should the day come that I bear my fruits, and that child comes of the age to have such a conversation, I look forward to the facial expressions when I tell him or her that before the rise of the internet, if you wanted to see naughty stuff, you'd have to go into a shop, pick a magazine off the shelf for all to see, then go over to a judgemental human being and give them money for it.

As a 90's baby I can't really say that this is much of a loss to me- I discovered free internet porn when I was 12 and never looked back.

I often wonder how magazines manage to stay in business with the advent of smart-phones and the computer, though. The book industry has been tanking for awhile now, but I haven't read a magazine in literally years.

Y'know, I don't think I've ever really read or looked at an actual Playboy magazine other than a couple my older cousin showed me when I was, like, 7 or 8 years old (he was only 11 himself and probably looted them from my grandfather's stash). What I have looked at was a collection of all the centerfold pictures (from 1953-2003). Some sweet-looking women in there, and the pics were a tasteful display of the nude female form rather than just a way to get a teenager to shoot his load all over the page (although some did, I'm certain ). Kind of a pity to see that kind of art go, but I suppose with the internet actual printed nude pics are obsolete.
