Has anyone ever accidentally used too many points in a game? If so, why and how many? Recently I was so happy to see that Assault Marines in the newest Space Marines codex were only 14 points base. It was only after playing 1 or 2 games with my 10 man unit did I see that I somehow neglected the 3 points per model upgrade cost to bring the jump packs ... I feel bad because I won. It was only 30 points or so, but that makes a difference sometimes.

I've had a few minor issues because of errors in Battlescribe data. But they've never been serious, and most often rectified quickly, on their part.
I have also had experience with people 'accidentally' bringing more points to a game. Once played a drop-pod list loaded with Death Wind missile launchers that he hadn't paid for.

If it's an accident, who cares? Either you win against the odds, or you can joke that you only won because you outnumbered the opponent.
If it's deliberate, then I won't play that person again.

I did once inadvertently play with a unit of bloodletters that I had taken out of my list prior to the game. Just unpacked them and set them up on autopilot...
It wasn't a competitive game though - just a friendly against my mate.

As a question, if you realised afterwards that you'd been over the limit in points, would you actually tell your opponent?
Or, would you just quietly amend your next list?

I did once forget to pay the points for 2 drones. I realised that mid-game and removed them, my opponent was all chill and even said I can leave them if want to.
I had people "forgetting" to pay the points for some stuff against me but I never really cared. I was once told after a game the guy I played with brought 800pts of necrons into a 500pts game, but he soon became known for that in the shop. I'm one of the few people who still play with him and yeah he still does bring surplus stuff lol.
I would certainly tell my opponent any mistakes I made had I realized them later.

I played against a sisters of battle player who accidentally thought we were playing a 2k point game when we agreed on a 1500 point game. He immediately apologized after that, good guy just made a mistake.
I once played a game where I last minute changed my list and when I went to the game I brought out my older stuff from the other list and proceeded to table my opponent. I think it gave me about 100-200pt advantage on him, I told him the next time we played he could bring that advantage on me to make it even.
If your honest about little mistakes you should be good to go, if your hiding them then people will think your TFG and not want to play with you. In gaming, honesty is everything.

My brother and I were playing a 4k game. It took about 3-3.5 hours in total. Well I lost by 1 VP or so. I had a stompa left and some other random ork units scattered here and there against his blood angels. He had an objective I couldn't quite reach guarded by a tac squad. He also had some other left over units as well. We called the game and it was close.
I did think that something didn't feel right. After totaling up his points in battlescribe I believe he was playing with 5100 or 5300 something like that. After showing him he immediately was like yeah you won that game my bad. I almost won with that level of point difference so he was not pressed to argue my victory

I played with 30 pts more than I wanted to a few weeks ago due to an error on Battlescribe. I realized later that week that Battlescribe has CSM Aspiring Champs cost of a power sword at 0 pts. I told the dude I played next time I saw him - " hey dude, I cheated by 30 pts last game because I had 2 powerswords I didn't pay for"-Then I just explained that Battlescribe had the wrong point cost and I hadn't realized.
It was no big deal and I told him I triple checked the point cost on my current list.

I'd let them know, I take a lot away from the outcome of games towards what my list may be lacking and what my opponents are capable of doing - I'm sure everyone knows their own race better than the other ones right. It would be nice to let your opponent know the reality of the situation just so he isn't trying to tweak his list in a way he shouldn't be at that points value.
Other than that I probably wouldn't dwell on it. If they are the type of person that you're worried might flip out about such an accident or even just dislike you over it/give you a bad rep, then they don't really deserve the time it would take to inform them anyway.

I once built two 750pt demo armies to intro a friend to the game and accidentally shorted his army by 30 points.
I also gave him 2+ units and myself grav-bikes. despite trying to keep the game balanced, I just crushed him to the point he could barely play. I had to switch the armies and reset the game to keep him interested.

Honest mistakes happen, and if you playv enough games they will occur.
Messed up communication, mathematical error, a wrong app or such. It's all pretty easy mistakes to make. People make mistakes, it how you deal with them.
I once forgot to add the combined weapons price properly, but that was honest and no problem, my friend was over the game before by mistake too as I had removed somthing as I'd got the forgeworld org abit out and forgotten to amend the number.

Yeah, I would want to tell. When I get a chance I'll tell my opponent of that last game. For what I'm aware of, I'v eonly done this one other time and I actually brought 200 - 250 extra points of Space Marines (I think it was a Land Raider that didn't count due to an error in how I set up my Excel Spreadsheet) against my CSM opponent for a friendly pick up game. However, he still won and beat me, so we had a good laugh about his generalship when he found out he won against the odds.

Honestly I end up forgetting models more often than playing with too much. The few times that it happened its usually from placing too many boyz in a unit (say 25 instead of 22) but rarely has that made much of a difference. Nobody really seemed to care all that much about the little mistakes and they happen so rarely than its not much of an issue.

Ive had incidents with my opponents where one of us may have 4 points extra, so we just add a body to a squad somewhere. Rules for allowing 10 models in an Xport dont apply if we end up having issues like that. but we always try to make it even.
Several times we've come across inconsistencies in unit prices, so we just on the fly add or subtract models to even out the points (Usually adding models)

This is where I draw the line. Accidents happen, but if it's constantly happening you need to change your method or I'm going to stop playing you and wasting my time. Put a little bit of time into preparing your list, double checking the points tallies should only take a minute or two and if its a mistake you are often making its something you need to start doing. 40k games can take like 3 hrs, cmon man just put in a little bit of effort to doing it right
