Subject: Ghostkeel battlesuit. 1 or 3? Is it worth the buy?

Since I will be mainly playing Tau now, as I work on my wolves, and was wondering if this new battlesuit is worth purchasing both money/points? Recently picked up the storm surge so the wallet is a little thin... I personally think the rules are neat and potentially has a decent amount to offer. How would one implement him, is it better to run the three or is one enough? Do I need to build my list around them?

I'd get none of them as the new codex is just a copy-paste of the old one + new units/forms.

Feel free to ignore rowboat, there is no evidence that the new codex is a copy+paste, in fact only evidence against it.
(devilfish turned into FA, classic FW changed a bit, etc)
In any case, the ghoust is a bit of an unknown so far, as there is an army wide rule called "fire team" he has, and we know nothing about. (another proof of not a copypaste, none of the other new units has it, so its in some of the existing ones)
Overall, its a healthy source of S7Ap4 shots. hard to take out and mobile, but lacks the raw spam value of the broadside (who might be changed)
Its unclear to how he will fit into new armies, especially when you consider there is supposedly new formations AND a new FoC, so there is no telling how a new tau army will look, but if you like the suit, it seems solid enough to be multiplied.
Personally, I'd think 3 is a bit of an overkill, but that's assumptions, and may be proved wrong.

Have heard there are two formations specific to the Ghostkeel. One is a Stormsurge/ghost formation and one is ghost/stealth related. As to what they do, no idea. I will likely field a squad of three in the role of AT hunting.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.

The Ghostkeel doesn't seem to have much of a purpose apart from as a big distraction.
Small blast fusion blaster? Not much different to a normal fusion blaster, you'll still probably only hit one target.
6 AP4 shots at BS3 might put a dint in a GEQ squad if you're lucky.
Doesn't have scout or infiltrate so has to foot slog across the board.
It MUST take 2 drones and if one dies that's a leadership check.
If i was gonna take a unit, i'd take 2, so that's 6 models meaning leadership checks shouldn't be an issue, can also use the snap fire thing twice which is nice. Still a lot of points for not a lot of output though.

Maybe it's better if you Deep Strike it. With the Stealth Suit formation, Ghostkeel really becomes a beast

Yeah but i could have a squad of 3 crisis suits with 6 fusion blasters for about the same price Vector Strike wrote:Taffy17 wrote:Doesn't have scout or infiltrate so has to foot slog across the board.

Maybe deep striking is the way to go but i'm still not sure what its purpose is once its on the board, also with a nice big base it has a good chance to mishap. I'm keen to see the stealth suit formation, i've seen the bundle on GW's website and assume it'll have rules, have the rules been leaked yet?

indeed. if the suits are at 6" of the keel, everyone get ignores cover, +1BS and always shoot at the back of vehicles.

Found the rules, that looks like a pretty good reason to take one. 6 S7 shots on the rear armour is gonna hurt a lot, and BS4 and ignores cover without spending a markerlight rocks. Guessing he only needs to be in 6" of one of the stealth teams to get it, not both?

Honestly, at first i would want a trio. But seeing the stealth cadre, now i doubt i'd ever want more than 2. Coupled with the stealth suits you dont really need multiple ghostkeels, but more is of course not going to be frowned upon.
I have 2, but i bought them before i found about the formation. Heavily debating the 3rd one i was planning to get (but forgot to tell my FLGS i was getting 3 lol, they only had 2)

No massively pressing need to Deep Strike with standard deployment- Average board has 24 inches between deployment zones. Infiltration within 18 inches, if directly across from the opponent rather than trying to be super sneaky about it, lets the Stealth Suits deploy right in front of the Ghostkeel unit. Take into acount JSJ moves and you can catch up in one turn.

For 225 points your have a Monstrous creature that has an 2+ cover, 4+ invuln, FNP, and two weapons (usually Raker+ TL Fusion). Three of them is a decent chunk of points, but I would not feel bad about putting them in CC. They have 3 attacks each and thanks to smash hit at AP2.
They are very capable of blowing a transport open and charging whatever is left inside or weathering a charge.

I could see deepstriking if you didnt use the formation, but even without it you really dont need it. You dont want to be TOO far from the rest of your army.
Also, personally i dont think i'll be paying for both a shield gen and stims. I kinda cant believe they have the same price a Stormsurge/Riptide does for those pieces of gear. That comes dangerously close to doubling his cost, and more often than not you wont need the 4++ unless you wanna melee.

Its not large blast. Its blast. Also the raker is the better choice. Str 7 and no range restrictions for full effect. Couple that with burst cannons and the formation and you take out a leman Russ in one round with him regardless of facing, at 24 inches, then you can hop away even farther for safety.

Besides new units it's copy and paste and the removal of some fluff. The codex is supposed to be the worst of the one from Necrons on in actually quality not strength of units
However I'd definitely get one to play. It may not end up being the most competitive option... I'm not sure but it definitely woon't be bad. I'd want three but I aldo want three SS and I probably will only get a combination of three total

Largeblast can almost never hit more than just the vehicle they aim at without scattering well because the way the rules say you have to put it as much over the vehicle as possible. I'd count on never being able to with the small blast they come with. I don't generally like to play anything around chance.

yeah stimms are WAY too expensive for this unit. If you take a unit of three you can put stimms on the front runner though

Yeah the melta blast isnt very good. If it was 2-3 shots instead of a blast it would be amazing.
Meltas are rarely good for taking out models, its usually an overkill for the price vs shots.

If using the Optimized Stealth Cadre, a Squad of 3 Ghostkeels seems like an AWESOME unit.
For 135 points each, you are getting a WS2, BS5, S6, T5, W4, I2, A3, LD9, 3+ AS unit that has a 2+ cover save in the open, 2 drones each to soak up wounds, can make 3 different enemies snap fire all their weapons at the unit (when taking 3), Ignores cover with all weapons, always hits the rear of enemy vehicles, firing 6, str7 AP4 shots along with 4 str5 AP5 shots. Take 2 target locks and all 3 can shoot at different targets. Oh, and they can all Jump, Shoot, Jump.

Looking at the Storm Surge, you definitely need to build around it. You have to protect it from ultra fast types who could quickly mire it in unending close combats. I think one is probably the most Im looking to use. I see the fun in fielding three, but do I really want to be seen like people see players whi bring triple Wraith Knights? Nah.

Or you do like me and leave it out by itself with a broadside team and riptide a little ways away to provide support and act as more bait, and force the opponent to come to it then in turn 2 the retaliation cadre and the stealth cadre start dropping in behind everyone. If they don't take the bait they get shot up by everyone.
Im still thinking fusion blaster on the ghostkeels. Some extra AT. I see their main weapon as more as a general purpose gun and I have BCs and str 5 ap 5 weapons all over the place so the Ion/FB mix gives me good utility.

I've never considered doing anything else. The Fusion weapon can scatter, and I hate scatter, although if you run three ghostkeels in an OSC they should all be BS5 all the time. The flamer and BC are too weak and the Ion Raker fulfills the same role. Honestly, I'd rather bring a Ta'unar to the table instead of three Stormsurges. It's about $150 more but about half the points.

If you give the ghostkeel VT, the collider can't be fired at fliers. The raker can, and it'll ignore cover too, so no jinking!
