Like the title says, what's your favorite army/faction (lotr or hobbit) and why?

I have a hard time picking as I absolutely love a plethora of models from the range, from every faction. The balrog and smaug models almost tip me to those factions, however, I think my favorite good and evil factions are the following (based on the lore, background, style, models, etc):

Good: rohan, love the setting and characters
evil: angmar... dark, evil, trolls, the dead, and the witch king!

For the good guys, I'm a Gondor man through and through. Great heroes, competent troops, emphasis on rigid formation fighting and a 'thin steel line' where Rohan are more skirmishy, and just so much choice, especially when paired with the Fiefdoms. They're the jack of all trades, really, and I like that.

For the evil side, it's a bit more complicated, as when building armies I tend to see Mordor, Rhun, Umbar and Harad and Khand all as one big army as they are presented in RotK. Soooo much choice and variety, so many ways to build a different army that I almost never go for 'pure' factions when playing Evil. Even if my army is mostly Mordor Orcs I'll be bringing some Easterling pikes or Haradrim archers or Corsairs or Khandish horsemen. If I were forced to pick one and just one, then Mordor as they have the most variety, but I always use a Grand Alliance of Evil when I can.

Well for me it's hard to say as I enjoy using a multitude of armies and factions. For the good side I would have to say my last alliance. Mounted Gil-Galad and Elendil is just a potent mix !

For evil it has to be mordor it's got everything I could want, dragons, spectres, black numenorean, trolls, even siege equipment ! What more could I possibly want haha

Mounted Gil-Galad? That sounds like an awesome conversion... any pics? Which models did you use for the conversion?

good: Gondor... Osgiliath! Osgiliath Veterans are so awesome, and I love Boromir and Faramir and rangers and whatnot. I plan on building Osgiliath soon, I have like 7 sets of the plastic kit and several hundred styrofoam bricks to build ruins with!

evil: Isengard, my first love! everything about Uruk Hai. followed by Harad! Suladan, a ton of Serpent Guard and Riders, the Golden King and the Abrakhan Guard.

Its hard to say. I like variety and there's something to be said for most of the factions. I guess if I had to pick two...

GOOD - Gondor. I was tempted to say Rohan, as I like them a lot, but Gondor has a bit more variety and some cool characters.

EVIL - If we break it down into sub-factions, I'd say Easterlings. I just love the look of them, they have some good characters and their own Ringwraith.

Having never really played the game, but being a fan of the LotR books and movies and a collector of the minis, I would say I like:

Good: Dwarves. They may be short in stature, but they are tough angry little guys with axes, and that is awesome!

Evil: Easterlings. Their armor is so cool, man was I disappointed that they only appeared in the movies in one scene.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

re Easterlings; technically you see them during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields (you see regiments of them with their pikes), and you definitely see them smash through the gate of Minas Tirith:

Hmmmm.

I really like a lot of the factions in LOTR!

LOTR dwarves are to me, PROPER dwarves, no silly firearms or steampunk, just tough bastards with axes.

LOTR elves, likewise, are proper elves, and the only ones I'd consider collecting.

The Dwellers Beneath are such a cool concept, the hordes of maggot folk storming the surface to take what they need, and I really like the combination of horde troops with various weird monsters and beasts.

On the other hand, Mordor is the classic evil army of baddies, and it looks fantastic on the field. Trolls, armoured orcs and the usual rabble, lead by a ringwraith on a flying monster... awesome!

The fallen realms are the business too, with lots of really characterful human infantry and lovely models.

Rohan are my favourite Good Human faction, I think the designs are just the business.

I guess the only ones I don't really like are Gondor, because I don't much like the armour design (not dark ages enough for me) and I'm not super fond of Hobbits as a military force - they shouldn't really be a horde army, which is what they end up being. It's easier for me to pick my least favourites than my favourites, but if I had to choose...

Evil: The Dwellers Beneath
Good: Rohan

Good - I always defaulted Rohan for some reason, maybe for the Riders of Rohan. Theoden is kind of, "meh," but he's fun to use. The Fiefdoms looks pretty tempting to try out though.

Evil - Isengard. Lurtz has seen many a battle, and the Uruk-Hai infantry have quite the impressive statline. Easterlings would be the runner-up because... well... they look so cool! That, and Dragon Knights.

Faithful... Enlightened... Ambitious... Brethren... WE NEED A NEW DRIVER! THIS ONE IS DEAD!
