I have decided to share some of my new larger scale 40k stuff, after years and years of painting only 6mm/epic. So I'm very slow (It took me three nights to paint my first grot!)
I have been 'pushed' into having find something to not only be passionate about, but also has more common ground with other people than my other hobbies, and I thought what better than trying 40k again.
I am just a few weeks away from moving countries, and if from what I can tell GW are about to open a brand new store just a few miles down the road from me, so what better way to reach out to people, and do something I still really enjoy.

So I am painting up some greenies, with the hope of starting a 'as-all-or-as-many-grot-as-I-can-muster' ork army. I don't see myself as a competitive player, this army is for as much fun as I can conjure, which means more modeling than anything else.
Though I may be tempted to enlarge my chaos rats in to the 40k scale later on down the line.

But I am so outdated on the 40k scene, I am happy to accept all criticism, especially on equipment, as its almost like a new concept for me now (at 6mm no one seems to care if it looks like a zap gun, a kill kannon or a twig shover! they all work the same!)

My 'test' grot. I love these 'new' grots. The heads mix perfectly with a lot of the goblin range, and they are a lot like the old gorkamorka snots (which I am lucky enough to still have!) I doubt I will have it in me to base the whole army like this, as It takes me so long to get done! but I thought It would look nice, and contrast with his cartoony bright skin. His hair highlights seem to disappear under day-lights, and the yellow shading is pretty horrendous, but at least he turned out neat.

various companions, trying to find a comfortable way to speed up painting my greens.

My cyber-wolf banner waver. I have some green stuff pipe work drying, which needs to be added to finish off the wolfs' enhancements. The banner pole needs to be replaced with some brass, as plastic is too weak to hold that giant bad moon banner!
I need to also source a space marine helmet for the pole top, as I think it needs a little something to add some blue, as the flag is going to be all yellow with the black moon glyph.

Cyber wolf is a big win from me too!

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Wow, you have talent in painting. Though, that banner seems a bit big to be carried like that by that little grot, weight wise. I also really like the wolf too, where is it from?

Sorry for the late reply. I moved counties and I got crazy behind with this project.

The wolf is just a bog standard WFB wolf that I hacked apart and added some gubbinz too. Got dismantled for a third time to be packed up for the move. Poor little bugger keeps almost getting finished but every time ends up back in his box! Next time I get him out I will chain myself down and finish him!

Been painting tons of AoS grots so when I come back to this project I should be able to pick up any painting slack and really get something finished!

The base for the cyber wolf is really clever. And you have some serious talent with that first Grot

Nothing to see here, move along mortal.

Thanks. Terrible photography skills hide the problems and mistakes I have with painting so there is that!

After some bad hobby experiences in the last few weeks left me feeling pretty down and out, Some good advice from other dakka members put me more on the straight, and I felt a bit better about continuing with 40k for the time being. Which left me free to work on this space mushroom all day yesterday, and I was even able to push past the 'he looks rubbish, I'm going to bin him' phase that comes around the the 2nd or 3rd layer of paint. Again, my bad photography hides a multitude of sins, but I don't think he turned out too bad, I have kind of just rolled with the bright cartoony colours, as that seems to be the only way I can paint.

Not sure what I am going to do for basing. I'm a thinking of using a 40mm base and adding some huge left over bits of my terrain (probably a flooring section from one of the kits), as the 25mm is too weedy for him, and I don't have any 32mm bases at all. I don't think I have the patience to base the whole lot the same as I did the grots as it takes forever, might go for more and more rubble, and just do the tiles on the grots.

Still need to paint his blue energy jam jars- though I'm not sure how. I did them as spirals on 6mm stuff, but its easier to do at small scale as they are not so noticeable, and doesn't matter if they are neat, and there are one or two bits I have missed, the cable on his head the glyph on his arm. I kinda skipped over them as not colour seems to be right for them (the cable especially- used a lot of red and blue on the head already but if I do it yellow it takes away from his shoulder pad, which is right next to it when glued on) and I didnt really want to add yet another colour.

Forced myself to sit down and finally finish my Mek, He was finally starting to creep me out, his headless body and his cold dead eyes staring at me from across the workbench!

I've started work on the first of his killer Kans, which was undercoated over a year ago and then packed away to move.

I'm trying to force myself to get a few more Orks done Asap, as I'm getting a lot of new projects in over the next few weeks. Especially looking forward to finally getting a stompa, which I put off buying knowing I'd have to move it when we left the UK.

Thanks! Its really easy, but a real pain to do!

Only 3 Colours! Dark angels green (citadel), Light Green (Vallejo), biel tan green wash (citadel).

  • Dark angels green

  • 50/50 Dark angels green/light green

  • Light Green

  • biel tan green wash

  • Light Green highlights

  • Now the GW paints are easy to work with, but that vallejo light green is the problem. Lovely colour, but does not behave well. Thins down way too easily, but thin it too much it gets really watery and bubbles all over the miniatures- which you have to pop or they dry. Don't thin it down at all and you end up with a detail-less blob. I tend to mix it with vallejo thinner (which is more of a retarder than a thinner) and then just slightly less water than you need to thin it- then paint it on with a wet brush, that way it doesn't get over thin, and the retarder stops it dry out in one brush stroke. I'd use something else except its a fantastic colour.

I tend to do a 50/50 dark angels/Light green mix as the 2nd coat now- I used to just do light green on top of the dark, but it takes so many thin layers, it too time consuming. I do have a pot of the old knarloc green, which it goes over perfect, but I've been saving that for painting my AoS goblins, as I have so many more to do than I do orks.

After highlighting the skin, I do sometimes go back over with a light green mixed with a little bleached bone, but this tends to be for the smaller minis (like night goblins) which don't have the skin on show enough for loads of thin green layers. Very light, I tend to stick to doing this on goblin noses and the like.

    WiP:
Cracked on with the first of the killer kans. Got most of the basic colours down, and did one shoulder pad. Need to Get the cabling done, then fill in some of the missing detail. The yellow seemed to take a darker/more orange tone once I had glazed it, I didn't want to go mad with the brightest yellow highlight, but I will see if it evens out once the other one is done. I made a start tonight on the second shoulder pad, but using a slightly different yellow base coat, to see if that makes a difference. I had to go back over him a second time, and add some more brass and bronze sections and pipes as there was too much silver, I will probably go back over a third time once the shoulders are done and add some more, where ever colour is missing/laking

I asked my girlfriend to name him something orky for me:

    Snodbolt the Kan!

I'm quite pleased him so far. I think this is the biggest mini I have worked on to date (excluding terrain).
