Cant copy/paste from phone for some reason, but TL;DR - Asshat Marines accuse Vietnam Vet of stolen valor, turn out to be very wrong. I hope the fetishization of exposing frauds ends soon, this gak is getting out of hand.

Copy & Paste:

66-year-old Jack Hughes was returning home from a Veterans Day event in St Louis, when he was assaulted by a group of Marines upon landing at Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport on Sunday.

Hughes says a man started walking towards him yelling: “Your ribbons are crooked … you’re a phony.” He called him a fraud and accused him of impersonating a veteran, while taking a swipe at his Purple Hearts — which Hughes received from battle in Vietnam.

The Vietnam vet showed local news media a picture of an officer presenting one of the medals to him in a hospital bed, as well as the telegrams informing his parents he’d been wounded in battle.

Still visibly shaken from the incident, Hughes said one of the men ripped the buttons right off his jacket. The attack on his credibility was expected in the 60’s when he recalls returning home from war and people throwing rotten eggs at his uniform.

But that was then. “I can’t believe one veteran would do that to someone else,” Hughes said about the recent incident at the airport. They were recording the whole thing while taunting him in front of a crowd of people.

In tears he re-lived the encounter during an interview with WSOC-TV and said he showed the men everything he had in his possession at the time– to prove that he was not a fraud.

He showed the group his VA health care card but apparently that wasn’t enough to convince them. While police finally intervened and made the group apologize to Hughes – he says that’s not enough. He doesn’t want this to happen to another veteran.

What they did was considered simple assault, a misdemeanor, and police did not make any arrests.

At this point it isn't even about exposing Stolen Valor anymore I think, it's just about proving to themselves about hardcore and "real" they can be and more "look at me exposing a fraud" and less "look at the fraud".

TIL simple assault is apparently not worth making an arrest over, because i don't even fething know reasons.

The cop did force them to say there were sorry, like the children they are.

But you know that the only thing worse than attacking a veteran is arresting a soldier.

That's not true, military members get arrested all the time. Had a buddy doing 2 years in a Japanese prison for being a sailor. I was arrested as well, had to pay my own bail then had the charges dropped in court.

At the least pay any medical bills or damage caused to uniform etc. A hit to the wallet might make them think.

Cause veterans are considered above reproach. This means that they can do no wrong.

He's not wrong though. The US has such a hard on for hero worshiping soldiers that it often makes any criticism directed at soldiers be received with "You hate soldiers/America" or "You're un-American"

Either you are missing some facts or you are leaving some out, possibly both, but something about that doesn't pass the smell test.

well it was fishy, as that's what they mainly fed him, and ya I skimmed on quite a few facts.

He stole a car, went on a drunk joy ride and caused 2 accidents and fled both of them. You know, being a sailor

I was arrested later in a totally unrelated event.

Service members get arrested all the time for various things. In san diego just to be dicks, they put a red light camera right in front of the naval stations main gate.

I remember that episode of House and it was quite good.

I understood it also. Even if the cops don't do anything I hope they're command does.

One of my guys went to a location and took a man's hospitality as a chance to try to have sex with his 15 year old daughter and cause some damage to the guys boat.

My marine came back and told me about it. I wasn't happy. Me and another squad leader took him back to make him pay for it and apologize but the man was gone. I made him pay for it at the base. For a long time.

Because, as one article pointed out, the Vet in question went so far as to pull out his VA Medical ID to prove that he wasn't just wearing some gak he bought on surplus. Also, if the pictures that go along with these articles are accurate, he was merely wearing a sport jacket with some of his medals on (as I've seen NUMEROUS old timer vets do)

Thing is, the numbnuts' that do this kind of gak are completely irrational beings, there is no reasoning with this kind of idiocy. I will echo what others have said: I hope these jarheads' command do some serious damage to these clowns, either in UCMJ or even a nice chapter packet.

They were jackass macho idiots impressing each other. Nothing the Vietnam vet did was going to dissuade them, and he shouldn't have had to prove anything in the first place. I hope they are able to be disciplined, like has been mentioned above.

Accurate as well. I know quite a few people who have seen real combat (I was only IDFed so that hardly counts) and they all seem to be uncomfortable with the 'hero' label.

Well the truth of the matter is that military service doesnt automatically makw you a hero, its what you do during that service that matters.

Thats obviously not an answer as they were victimising a veteran and the police present saw this.

No the answer is more likely along the lines of, this is high spirited and malicious, but no real harm is done yet, so diffuse the situation. Veterans are not of themselves a protected class, they weren't called the v-word or any other equivalent taboo which would cause an immediate arrest.
All in all it sounds like the police officers did their job, and a real veteran show his value by defending his legitimacy rather than demanding compensation.

I do think the 'stolen valor' hyped nonsense needs to be placed back in its pram and rocked to sleep though. It's getting embarrassingly childish now.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

While they should certainly be disciplined, a Dishonorable discharge is way too severe for what they did.

I can assure you that military personnel get arrested on a regular basis. I also recommend educating yourself prior to making posts that are clearly false and add nothing to the discussion, other than to bear witness to everyone present that you have no idea what you are talking about.

And I'm not saying this to be mean. I actually want you to learn. So please get to it.
