Has anyone else toyed with ideas that would be completely unexpected when they're writing? Like, I wrote up a scene where Vayden shoots Isos in the back several times, and walked off into the distance, when in reality he was rushing forwards to help him, but I changed how it happened for the fun of it, before switching back to what actually would happen. Does anyone else do something similar?

Well Ryus died... The original fluff for the New Order actually had Sylus go Chaos with the First Company, but the complete opposite just happened.

So in my Knight pitch I mentioned losing all of the older, veteran Knights against CSM, and I was thinking of having one of the warbands present in this Crusade be the one responsible (as I think it could lead to some interesting fluff), would any of the CSM players object to this? If not, would anyone care to claim responsibility and thus start a grudge match against my Knights?

I don't mind, if you run short of volunteers. The Flayed Legion in this campaign is starting off as a secretive, cultist-only presence (with rumors and whispers of the big guys), so the actual CSM won't be along until later. But like I said, if that strikes your fancy or you need a volunteer.

They were approaching the planet, it was time. Grulahk rose from his throne and acknowledged his guard. He turned to his left and walked towards the hangar, he passed Ultarn who followed behind him. Ultarn was the Lord of the Warrior Legions, a formidable warrior in combat and a brilliant on the fly tactician. Grulahk continued towards the hangar through the scarab pits, Numek was soon behind him as well, him and his pet scarab Kephri. Numek was the Cryptek of Lesser Swarms, and creator of the Canoptek Locusts that were guarded on Voor’Han. Finally Grulahk had made it to the command perch in the hangar, Ultarn stepped to his left and Numek stepped to his right. Grulahk looked at his Court with pride before speaking to his gathered legions, “We have arrived at Crion. Kageros sent us with but one command, ‘Bring this planet under OUR influence.’ “ He looked upon his legions and felt good, he liked saying that, ‘His legions.’ “We are not here for the other Necrons, they forsake us and so we forsake them, and we are stronger for it. This is our time for reclamation. This is our time for conquest. This is our time to reach out into the galaxy and show everyone that it is ours by right! If we can not bring it under our control, or into our alliance, then we will burn it, kill it, and strengthen our galaxy.” He shot his arm into the air, and in his hand was Rak’than’s staff. Ultarn raised his arm, then Numek, then the rest of the legions. Grulahk couldn’t have felt more confident of his legions, “No peace but war!” The entirety of the legions replied, “No life but death!” The shout reverberated through Grulahk’s metallic hull and through the ship. Grulahk bellowed, “TOWAR!”
The Legions were assembled...
The Swarms were roused...
The War Engines powered to life...
Grulahk, Second Nemesor of the Kageros Dynasty, Ascendant Warrior, Master of Reclamation...
Marched to war…
Wait, when I asked about what kind of scale I'm working with chazz said "oh, we're trying to keep it balanced so your fort gets 1-3 regiments". I mean, my boys are a hopelessly outclassed bunch of casual scrubs, but with two infantry regiments and another regiment's worth of support plus air support thay should hold against that. Maybe. If the wind is on their side. And they don't gak themselves. And their guns actually work...
Ok, those poor sentient cardboard cutouts won't know what hit them, but your Necrons will have to spend a lot of gauss batteries to kill them all, the Imperium will probably condecorate me.

I mean, you have to get to Crion III first. And THEN you have to find where I am in a forest. Then you have to find the entrance to my tunnel system. Then you have to get through the Derelict Legion

For anyone who didnt see my thread about my forces,a space marine chapter by the name of the Emperor's Hounds. They distrust the inquisition but are not powerful enough or have enough influence to oppose them like the space wolves do, so they curse them under their breath.
As for their paint job I imagined them to be dark purple with a silver trim but I discovered that to be similar to the soul drinkers so I added white on the helmets and other areas. My main worry is that they are too similar to the space wolves in the way I named a few things in the organisation of the chapter. They adhere to the codex mostly with a few changes. Instead of 10 companies they are called packs. Each company is led by a alpha marine. The chapter master is called the great hound and the chapter prefers close combat to ranged.
They have a homeworld in the segmentum tempestus and it is a feudal world, with villages, castles, vassals and limited technology. It pays its tithes to the imperium in terms of food and manpower. The chapter recruits many of its warriors from the population but in an effort to avoid culture shock tries to recruit its serfs in the surrounding worlds. The planet is often targeted by Dark elder raids which strike a village and are generally away with their slaves before the marines can arrive. This has caused a deep hatred to burn in the hearts of every marine for the elder and they don't distinguish between the two types of xenos.
They try and be cooperative to there space marine brother chapters and respect the imperial guardsman,PDF and the imperial citizens as a whole. As a result of their distrust of the inquisition they do not get on with the Exorcists however and see them as lap dogs of the inquisition and they try and stand up for the chapters that are looked at with suspicion such as the Black Dragon.
As for my forces in this crusade, The hounds will be sending the 4th pack under Faolan Gall, an experienced Alpha marine.
Some of the squads are as follows:
Honour Guard Madra
Assault squad onóir
Assault squad Trodaithe
Assualt sqaud Brí
Assault squad Dílse
Tactical sqaud Uirlis
Tactical squad Mara
Tactical squad Fraoch
Devastator squad Neart
Devastator squad Bua
Plus a few odds and ends ie apothecary, chaplin, librarian ect.

Wolf lord + 4 wolf guard
Wolf, iron, rune priest
Yarl Agmar, auxiliary leader
3-4 long fangs
6 grey hunters
5-6 blood claws, swift etc
1-2 thunder wolf cav
5-7 wolf scouts
Land raider Spartan
Custom thunderhawk
Armoury roughly of a over strength battle company + storm fangs, storm wolves etc.
With less than perfect pack sizes, I'm about 160 marines strong.

Been thinking of adding a dreadnought but i have no idea how many of them are typically in a company, i suppose it varies from chapter to chapter but does anyone have a rough number as to how many i should field?

I know I'm pretty high for one company but nearly 1/3 is blood claws so not all veterans so tactical and heavy support fire im the same as a codex company roughly. Just more assult power in my larger close combat complement.
Plus thundereolves but technically there not always on the "official" roster

Well, I finally got round to taking a pic of Acting-Captain Aurelius. Paintjob's acceptable, rather happy with the sword and right shoulder pad, but a little messy and thick in places, especially his left side. A few mould lines on the leg and the backpack, but overall, I'm happy with him as my current commander in game. That said, he looks far far too small on that base.
Incidentally, if you want to use him at home, an Ultramarines Captain with Relic Blade, Shield Eternal and artificer armour represents him well.
Of course, if I were to homebrew him, he'd have something like:
Spoiler:
Acting-Captain Aurelius HQ Choice for any Space Marine army, or may be taken instead of a Captain or Chaplain in any Space Marine Demi-Company - 215 points
Wargear: Paragon Blade, Litura, Aegis of Praetoria, artificer armour, Iron Halo, frag and krak grenades
Paragon Blade: Aurelius was gifted this by Lord Marshall Karak during the Charadon Campaign. Once a relic of the Ultramarines Legion, now back in the Chapter's hands, Aurelius wields it. Although some of it's potential has been lost, it remains a powerful weapon in the Acting-Captain's hands. Range: - S: +1 AP: 2 Type: Melee, Specialist Weapon
Litura: Another gift to Aurelius, Litura was granted by Lord General Zonand to the young Ultramarine. It is represented a master-crafted grav pistol, that may be wielded alongside Aurelius' Paragon Blade and Aegis of Praetoria.
Aegis of Praetoria: The Aegis of Praetoria is a storm shield granted to him on his ascension to Acting-Captain of Strikeforce Praetoria, following the death of the previous Acting-Captain. It has a powerful shield generator, and is also capable of infusing Aurelius with combat drugs if the shield is breached. The Aegis of Praetoria confers a 3++ Invulnerable save, and a 4+ Feel No Pain save. This may be taken even if the wound would cause Instant Death.
Special Rules: Chapter Tactics (Ultramarines), And They Shall Know No Fear, Independent Character, Proving Honour, Hatred (Warboss Skulkrusha), Sorceror's Influence
Proving Honour: The Acting-Captain is desperate to prove himself to his Chapter, and throws himself into challenges heedless of the danger. Aurelius rerolls failed Heroic Intervention rolls, and must issue and accept challenges if able. Look Out Sir! may not be taken on Aurelius, although Heroic Intervention can.
Sorceror's Influence: The psychic imprint of the Remnants Sorcerer has made Aurelius' mind his own personal plaything, making it resistant to all but it's own, and other similar, touches. Aurelius may not attempt to Deny the Witch against Psychic powers from the Telepathy Discipline. However, he receives a +1 Deny the Witch against all other Disciplines.
Warlord Trait: Drop Pod Specialist Aurelius' favoured tactic of close quarters drop pod insertion is passed on to his men, and enhances an already deadly assault.
If Aurelius is your Warlord, all units in the same detachment as Aurelius within 18" of him gain the Counter-attack and Shrouded special rules if they have disembarked from a Drop Pod that turn.
Probably broken as hell.
I'm still working on the writing, three characters are now dead. RIP in peace.

Fantastic model Smudge! Next time I get a chance I'm going to model either Grulahk or Rak'than... Maybe rules for them too, I hadn't thought of that.
Here's an idea for Kegeros:
Warlord Trait: Full Speed Ahead!- Allows all flyers on the board with the Codex:Necrons faction to ram as if they were a tank. When this is done, the ram is resolved at Av13 but is reduced to 1 hull point for the duration of the maneuver. If the Flyer is destroyed while ramming, place Massive Blast marker centered over the flyer. roll for scatter as normal

Spoiler:
"Forward, Arbiters, make them repent!" the cyborg-Astartes bellowed from his mount, a great saurian creature of the desert, wyrm, a flightless dragon. His voice was cold and metallic, much like his demeanor. He waved an eagle-headed staff above his head then pointed it to a domed building in the distance. Between the dragon rider and the building, were thousands of PDF ready to defend their home from the invaders. Little did they know, their valiant leader had doomed them all. Their planet had once been a valued manufacturing planet of the Imperium, but their Governor openly revolted the High Lords of Terra. He demanded their planet be run democratically. Foolish Governor. Now he assembled the rag-tag PDF to halt the Arbiters of Truth, a half-machine, half-Astartes chapter that rose like a phoenix from the smolders of their former chapter, the New Order.
They formed close ties with the Ordo Hereticus, whom demanded they repented their sins with Pentinent Crusades. They formed close ties with the Adeptus Mechanicum and gained enough augmentations and Skitarii to continue their crusades. They shifted from a shifty, scheming force, to a remorseless, merciless killing machine, in the entirety of the term. They trained up Neophytes with such vigour that most did not become full Astartes without receiving mechanical augmentations first. They weren't anything more than machines and all that was left of their humanity was faith in the Emperor and the Omnissiah. They were superstitious at best and obsessed at worst. The Arbiters believed every single action, every bolter jam, every fallen enemy, every augmentation, was because the Emperor and the Omnissiah willed it. They relied on soothsayers and mediums to predict the outcome of their confrontations. Most of their allies refused to fight along side them directly due to an irrational fear, though they would say it was rational.
Their leaders, a mix of a Chaplain, a Techmarine and a Captain, were Judges. Judges determined what the Emperor and the Omnissiah has decreed about whatever predicament was before them. Judges were in charge of morale among their Brother-Arbiters. Judges repaired the equipment and vehicles of the Arbiters. Judges commanded the Skitarii. Judges were the ultimate leaders. Each Judge wears an Adamantium mask sculpted in the likeness of the wearer. Each mask is inscribed with minuscule wards that protected the wearer from the harmful warp projections of witches and xenos alike. They resented the presence of psykers like Librarians, whom the Arbiters had a special hatred for. Ironic as it may be, they never went anywhere without a telepath nearby, as they would be lost without the guidance of the Emperor and the Omnissiah. The highest Judge, what other chapters would call a Chapter Master, was simply called the High Judge.
Accompanying the Arbiters of Truth on their crusades is the Adeta Sororitas Order of the Silent Lotus. The Order of the Silent Lotus originates from the same system the Arbiters do and as such their founding is inconspicuously close to the founding of the New Order, the precursor of the Arbiters of Truth. The Order of the Silent Lotus operates as Sister Hospitallers for the Arbiters of Truth in replace of Apothecaries, should an Arbiter actually receive an injury that does not require bionics.
* * *
Judge Sylus dismounted his drake and surveyed the stretch before them. The PDF were bringing their Leman Russ Tanks to bear against the Arbiter offensive. They would be smashed aside in short order, should the Emperor and the Omnissiah willed it. Sylus turned to his handler, Inquisitor Birminghold, who had brought them to this wayward planet.
"The enemy is before us, Sylus my boy! We must not give them a chance to recover," the Inquisitor shouted. Sylus could have sworn Inquisitor Birminghold was some carnival heckler just from the way the Inquisitor spoke.
"Inquisitor, there must be a full battalion of Leman Russes ahead. I believe we are sorely outmatched," the High Judge spoke, his mask filtering all words into an emotionless monotone.
"Sorely outmatched sounds like a personal best for me!"
"Aye, Inquisitor, but the Arbiters never fail."
"And fail you won't. I have sent the Little Angel to kill the Governor while we attack their front line head on," the Inquisitor murmured, looking over his shoulder to make certain not another being was listening. Sylus would have strangled the Inquisitor if he could. The Angel, a living saint among the Arbiters, was not a petty assassin. The Angel was much more than that.
"We have Hassassin operatives on their way to the Governor's Palace, there was no reason to send Angel," Sylus said, almost as a curse. It was said in such a way, his mask couldn't filter the malign in his voice. Inquisitor Birminghold waved his hand and walked down the trench line to his command tent. Sylus cursed in his native tongue and followed the Inquisitor.

Usually in game, I'd go with the Shield Eternal, as per most builds, but as a special character, he doesn't need it. That said, EW on a two wound model wouldn't do much anyhow, and he's expensive enough as is.
=====Wrath of Faust, The Void===== Pallios contemplated the happenings of the last few months while waiting for his Stormbird to reach the half-shell of the Imperial ship. This sector was broken, but was rebuilding, and would be healed in time. There were still morsels of Xenos and Imperium alike still abound, but that was not why they were here. They had slipped in and started salvaging the broken remnants of whatever was left. This system was shattered and broken, perfect for salvage. The light inside the hull flashed green, heralding the arrival of the ship. Pallios stood and looked over to Lord Ogun and Lord Camalus and nodded. The 20 marines they had brought with them unloaded and began to look for what they could take. Pallios started his way to the bridge to see what he could get for his reliquary. It was 30 minutes later when he heard the deep grumbling voice of Ogun, “Pallios, you might want to see this.” “What is it Ogun?” “You’ll have to see for yourself.” “On my Way.” He took a second glance around the Captain’s Quarters. Nothing of note, he turned and began walking towards Ogun’s location. When he arrived, Ogun, Camalus, and a couple marines stood in a circle and looked at the floor. Pallios didn’t see it until it was right in front of him, a contorted metal corpse. Pallios' comms beeped again, this time it was from Lord Arawn, "Pallios, I bear good news. There is fresh conflict arising in the nearby sub-sector of Crion." Pallios turned to the others, "Bring it aboard, take what we have and return to the fleet. Get ready for war." He entered the Stormbird, "Arawn, set course for Crion, we will have prime pickings for the salvage." Ogun spoke, "Pallios what should we do with this," nodding to the corpse in his hands, "It is an odd salvage indeed." "Take it to the reliquary, we have more pressing matters." =====Bridge, Ethereal Guard===== Pallios thought of how to go about this, he did not want full scale conflict, but he would not be driven away. He looked to a servitor manning the console to his left, "Send word to the fleet, our primary scavenging elements are to remain hear and collect what they can. Leave the Al-chemical, Reaver, and Naga's coven here. The rest will come with us."

Nicely done TS. I'm going to have to up my game with my Knight and Eldar intro. First part of my Eldar intro involves Gruhlak getting his arm shot off by a Ranger (who some may recognize the name of if they gave enough of a gak to read my mediocre writings)
TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
