There's a 2.5 mile deep gold mine in south Africa. Great secondary income for them, space is waste, fill it with nuclear waste.

What can go wrong?

This might be a good use of large-scale magnetic accelerators (a.k.a. railguns). You don't need a rocket then, and there's less likelihood of the material falling back to Earth. Of course, such things are many years away yet, but dreaming of new tech eventually leads to its development in real life (just look at some of the tech from Star Trek that already exists today!). Fusion reactors are probably going to be a similar story.

Behind you

Interesting parallels about how Fukashima happened. The biggest earthquake in Japanese history didn't phase the reactor, it was the tsunami, and the fact that the builder failed to account for a tsunami the size of the one that actually occurred.

Chernobyl was a massive human failure, and was also controlled with vastly inferior understanding of the fission process, vastly inferior science and technology of the age.

The amount of radiation you get during an x-ray or MRI is vastly more than you'd get living next to a nuclear power plant for your whole life.

thats not even counting the technology behind thorium proton-beam reeactors (Essentially, unable to meltdown)

The whole point of a fusion powerplant is that its safer than fission power. We've had three or four major incidents with nuclear power plants in their history. How many worldwide affecting accidents regarding coal power, or oil power have there been. A lot more. Rig fires with massive losses. A county site in the USA abandoned because of coal seam fires.

Not to mention the massive pollution caused by coal and oil power. Fission power was always envisioned as a transitory technology to fusion and renewable energy.

Not impossible, just difficult and few want that near them however deep we bury it. Though a several mile deep gold mine would work!

Too deep to ever effect anyone.

It is proving difficult to find suitable burial sites, though.

2.5 miles down is deep enough that we never know it was there, miles and miles under the water tables, sealing off the last mile or so of access's with concrete and demolition charges. No one will ever see it again and the rock layer is so thick it would block it all.
Radiation would not make it to surface.

Pay south Africa a nice sum, nuclear waste gone. They need money too.

Exceot can we honestly trust corporations to actully follow through with proper disposal?

Oh. Not a fool. Disposal in the deep vault would be run by a international group based through somthing like UN, experts, all done to highest standards and laws, security etc.

A international run operations operation.

That needs to change so that we can move forward. In fact as much as nuclear weaponry has prevented wars it's inevitable I think. Only so long before some psychopath decides to not play by the rules and detonates a few. We'll need some counter-measures for when that day comes. Pretty scary when nuclear war could very realistically end the world.

More on topic I think this is cool news. Those germans always were good at science. Not sure if that's still the case but those guys were basically winning all the science nobel prizes in the early to mid-20th century.

Experimental reactors have already put out more energy than it took to start the fusion process, so now it's an issue of increasing output and reducing the exorbitant price tag of the reactor.

The main problem is getting a reactor to perpetuate. Most fire ups last less than a minute, and not by design.

Fusion will put out more electrical power than is placed in easily enough, but powering a rector for 40 seconds or so isn't going to solve power problems.

Fusion is a technology that has been 'a decade from producing results since the 50's, and frankly not much progress has been made. Nevertheless first world science has a duty to the human race to keep trying and trying with this one.

Fusion works in theory and has been proven in practice.

The development of commercial reactors is an engineering problem that eventually will get solved.

The problem with shooting nuclear waste into space is it is a) very expensive, and b) very bad for large parts of the planet if the rocket explodes on its way off the planet.

That's not how radiation sickness works. It's caused by either immediate cell death or damaged DNA leading to transcription errors. There's no cure to it possible, merely preventative measures such as iodine pills or wearing protective clothing and breathing apparatus.

New work with DNA reading and editing techniques is certainly moving towards a point where these corrective molecules can be used to scan for a group of common and known transcription errors and correct or remove them.

Similarly, tumour identification methods teamed with specific and localised drug/treatment delivery are getting better every year.

None of this is going to happen in the very near term, but it is technology that is certainly on the radar of present science.

Can't we just bury nuclear waste deep under the Gobi desert or some other equally remote and desolate wasteland? Maybe even forms nuclear testing sites that are already irradiated.

If theres little to no native population, and not much of an ecosystem to speak of, then what's the problem?

Thats kinda what the US does. We bury it in the middle of the desert, inside a mountain, under tons of concrete and steel. Even if it somehow got back to the surface and spilled into the environment it wouldn't do much damage at all. Assuming the containment vessels ruptured, which are extremely tough.
