Take the rules guard and skitarii/cult mechanicus have now. No changes other than saying they can be battle brothers with chaos. There are numerous examples in the fluff, and it really feels like GW dropped the ball on the last editions ally chart. Taking into account the things chaos are missing that marines have like drop pods, would it really be so game breaking? There are already numerous game breaking combos in the game as is. Now I dont know alot about the demon side, but what do you think would be a broken combo if this was allowed? Can you think of reasons NOT to allow this in tournaments?

Simple; they're bad guys. Bad guys aren't allowed to have fun stuff or stand a chance of winning - they're there to provide screams and bodies so the Eldar, Tau and Marines can boast about how much they killed in turn 1.
Our group doesn't stick to the ridiculous battlebrothers rule for Dark mechanicum or traitor guard - they can ally chaos and daemons

Why would they? What tournament would go out of their way and make up a rule just to appease the fluff of a faction that doesn't strictly have their own rules?

There is a Traitor Guard army that can be BB's with Chaos, IA13's Renegades & Heretics (as well as IA:Vraks own unique version). If an event allows FW, those options are open.
Aside from that, I'm assuming they're going off of GW's decision to treat these factions exactly as they are, as opposed to stand-ins for forces that they aren't attempting to portray really despite being similar.

I run Renegades and Heretics (More for the Renegades less for the heretics) with an allied CSM detachment (Alpha Legion look). It really adds to the theme and I love it. Recently I've added a Vindicare assassin (Eldar Pathfinder), and a Mallus Inqusitor I've fluffed to be watching and making sure the Renegades stay away from Daemons.
Going for an Imperial Uprising look. I understand I could run Imperial Guard, a space marine chapter, Vindicare, and an Inqusitor out of Imperium Codexes but... It just doesn't feel right. It works out okay as long as I keep them 6inches apart.
It wouldn't be broken if they could join eachothers units at all! nothing past some of the stuff ive seen the Imperium pull off.
Id love to see a new matrix, or some sort of exception that makes it work, like CSM not being able to ally with IG or Codex Space marines. Just Machanicus, Inqusition, Assassins, and such

Because 40k is stupid to balance for competative play already and deviating from set matricies and codecies is very shaky ground.

I know how you feel, as an Imperial Guard player mind. The feeling of having lost before you even deploy because some snotty 10 year old has brought on of the big four and selected a bunch of power units meaning that no matter how well you play you will still lose.... It is a feeling I am well acquainted with. Because the four Mary Sue races have to win all the time so that we can all forge the narrative together.
Yeah, meanwhile we in the unloved corner are removing large portions of our armies on turn one.

They make 1 small change to Tau and the all hell breaks loose. If they were to make a major change like Chaos and Imperial BBros, I think the 40K world would stop spinning.
But feel free to play it however you like in basement40K.
Hmmmm....on second thought, adding Abaddon to my Centstar does sound kinda fun.
