http://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/james-cameron-eyeing-christmas-2017-release-for-avatar-2/
There's no part of this I'm going to waste money on. There's not enough rum in the world to make this worth seeing.
James Cameron has laid out a mission plan ahead of the release of Avatar 2: to prove that the 2009 original won’t go down in the cinematic history books as “some big fluke.” Now, it seems the director has set his sights on Christmas of 2017 to launch the next chapter in his ambitious sci-fi universe.
Planning to shoot no less than three sequels simultaneously, the original release date of Avatar 2 was pushed to lend Cameron more time to flesh out the world of Pandora and its many moons. Nevertheless, late 2017 is now the preliminary milestone.

Cameron revealed the nugget in an interview with Montreal Gazette, where he teased a meta-narrative that will underpin the sci-fi trilogy and how each standalone chapter will dovetail into a “much larger story.” Will we finally dive deep into the sky-blue oceans of Pandora?
“Christmas of ’17 is the target. At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.
“We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task,” he added. “It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”
Either way, it’ll be yet another universe for moviegoers to wrap their heads around, what with Disney’s rejuvenated Star Wars, Marvel’s goliath and the DC Expanded Universe all occupying various portions of cinema’s ever-growing slate. This raises the billion dollar question of whether Avatar will be able to find an audience almost a decade after it brought the worldwide box office to its knees, but even if it doesn’t emulate the original, Cameron needs to cook up something special to maintain excitement across the entire trilogy.
If Avatar 2 does indeed nail down a Christmas 2017 release window, Avatar 3 and 4 will likely follow suit in 2018 and 2019, respectively

Sort of excited. The plot for Avatar was pretty weak, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. A good movie to see at the IMAX in 3D.

And yeah... I'm still seriously not all that interested in this, I may see it on rental or some such, but definitely not in theater.

Keep in mind that it was about the first mainstream film to take advantage of the 3D tech.
IMO, I think that's part of the reason why it was successful.

If only they'd stolen the plot of Princess Mononoke instead, the movie would have been ten times better.
And, yeah, people saw it because it's really pretty. Plot was secondary.

You should watch it. Its very pretty. Good movie to turn your brain off for and just look at the pretty pictures.
But yeah, its plot had the consistency and taste of flour soup. Which is a shame because I think it was really close to having a good plot. A few easy changes would have given it substance.

Yes, but Amazon Prime isn't going to have it on a 100 foot diagonal with booming 3D sound. I mean, if you're to ever go to the IMAX, I think this is the one to go see it for.
I agree that I'd probably never watch it again after that, if that was the gist, which upon re-reading I think was.

Yup, pretty much. The film will only be worthwhile for the visual spectacle, no reason to see it any other way in my view.

I will never understand when movies come out that are all spectacle and visuals with weak plots or stories and people respond by saying they'll just watch it at home later. I wound much rather watch the solid story movie at home and the pointless spectacle movie on the giant screen.

Indeed, but scene of Earth Space fleet glassing the planet, while awesome would be short, and Cameron likes long films. C-C-C--Combo Breaker!!
I enjoyed the movie immensely and saw it 3 times in theater. I understand its cool to dismiss it as 'x' but in space but I think you can pretty much break every movie down to just 'x' but 'x'. So that is just the silliest of silly complaints. It has a worth while plot once you stop looking for internet cred. Though admittedly I appreciated the color and imagination that went into the world of Pandora.
I thought Sam Worthington (wasn't he supposed to become a thing?) did a pretty good job of showing the progression of a 'civilized' man that chooses to become the 'noble savage'. He also did a fairly good job showing the struggle between staying loyal in his broken body or cutting free with his new body plot that underlined the middle of the movie.
Its definitely not worth renting at home (neither are half the movies I've enjoyed in theaters and then bought). Avatar 2 will be the same way. It will likely be ment to be seen in 3D on the biggest damn screen available and thus should be seen that way. I find that to be a legitimate artistic choice by the creator just like a movie in black and white or with a sepia down tone.
Y'all can hate it, thats cool. I am pretty excited for it though. An with Disney building an Avatar themed expansion to the Animal Kingdom I can assume it will have all the movie thrown its way.
(Btw I didn't mind Ferngully, that bat was a hoot. Don't care for Dances with Wolves though, can't stand Costner lol).

Plus the aliens were sitting on minerals that made "renewable" energy possible. Even Obama was in there rooting that we nuke 'em.
