Nids - now there's a codex that needs an overhaul.
My son plays CSM and considering he wins every time (I've played Tau, Marine and Guard against him so far), I haven't seen what the issue with this codex is.

To be fair, Tyranids don't do bad either now they've got drop pods (that also float off and go eat things when they're done delivering)

What kind of list your son plays?
CSM is good for non-competitive play I think.

For local play, there's generally nothing wrong with taking any army unless a given player wants to run a specific over-powered unit or list.
Where the weaknesses of a given codex - i.e. Chaos Space Marines - are exposed is at competitive tournaments.

Ahem, I just happened to call into my local GW today, to buy some upgrades for dark angels. (grandson plays them).
And when the the guy serving hears I play chaos, "well you'll be happy the end of the month then" When I ask why?, 'they have new stuff coming out".
"notice no chaos codex's on the shelves".
So get your salt out.

I really wish the likes of Sad Panda would pop in to help put a stop to this continuous & uncalled for tormenting the Chaos fanbase...
I mean seriously, *IF* Chaos Marines ever get another release, our model line is so ancient & full of holes that it'll need to be at least 4-5 kits minimum, on top of an entirely redesigned codex + a bunch of new wargear & vehicle variant options.
We're not something that can be fixed within a week or two at most, before 2-4 weeks of unneeded love is heaped upon Russ's whelps.

The Chaos Marine codex is still available, but now as a softcover version.
And really, a 1 or 2 week release is the absolute worst thing that could happen to us... Formations + Chaoscurion alone aren't going to help us. It worked decently enough for Guard in the Mont'ka book because their model line overall is nearly 100% complete. (basic Guardsmen could do with updating, and a proper Veterans + Roughriders kit would be ace! )
Chaos however needs re-dos at the very least on our basic infantry kit + termies (who can't even build 5 basic combi-bolter/power toy grunts for feth's sake!), and new kits (including NEW weapon options) for Havocs + Chosen.
Plus all the Cult units, (of which we do have reliable rumors for new 1kSons later this year), and hopefully, some new vehicle variants of our very own.
And that still leaves the fugly old Oblits/Mutilators and Cultists wallowing with bad kits.
It's not that I don't want to believe.
But we've been down this road of "hey guys, so-and-so told me new Chaos is coming!!" too many times before. On top of the fact that GW for some reason seems hellbent against giving us any kind of new equipment options or any flavour of characterful rules, beyond lolzMarines-1!
We're just so badly out of date that we really need a Dark Eldar level overhaul of everything
If we get a new book in Jan, after the likely week or two of AoS, yet Wolves are reliably rumored for Feb, I just don't see how there's time enough for us to get anything beyond yet another kick in the groin from GW.

While I don't like to speculate on rumors I think I can sort some things out. First and foremost GW is a company that wants to maximize profit. Chaos Marines are one of their more popular factions, so they will more than likely be released at the time of year where they may maximize sales. This space is usually reserved for vanilla Marines, but they are up-to-date, so next in line I guess.
If I remember correctly the past few "big" releases happened in late September/early October. This includes Marines and the Dark Eldar whole-army redo of 5th edition. Chaos Marines almost NEEDS to be a big release. They have more models in need of updating than any other faction (except Sister, and they are in limbo). Basic Chaos Marines are old, Berserkers are ancient, and the other cults are hybrids. Obliterator models are restic, as are Havoks. Three greater deamons are still restic.
On the plus side, All the dinobots are new, we have a new Dreadnought, Cultists are new (although a little simple), the Rhino is fine, Land Raider is fine (unless they want a new variant) and the deamon prince and possessed are fine. We all ready have a Lord of War (Lord of Skulls).
There is also the rumor of the Rubric marines release in the second half of the year, which I'm guessing ties into this.
If I had to guess..... I'd say a late September release. New boxes for the marines/cult marines (possibly a multi-box or boxes). New Havoks box, New obliterators, and a new toy of some variety. That looks like 6 boxes plus a codex. That's enough for a 4-week release window plus another release a couple months down the line.

Most of all I want a proper Terminator kit... The useless pile of rank horse gak we currently have is beyond pathetic.
All we get with the kit is;
3x Combi-Bolters
1x Combi-Flamer
1x Combi-Melta
2x Power axes
1x Power maul
2x Power fists
1x Chainfist
Plus of course the Heavy flamer & Reaper cannon.
Missing entirely are options for even a single Combi-Plasma + Power sword + Power lance + Lightning claw (let alone a pair of 'em!) + all 5 Icon options.
It's a travesty! There's no way to build any form of functional unit out of that garbage. Of all our lamentable kits, it's easily the most abysmal. At least the likes of Havocs & the bulk of the Cult have the excuse of being ancient Finecrap kits that are going on 10-15+ years old!
Our Termies though are from late 2007! And yet, they're probably the one and only plastic kit in the entire 40k range that cannot even build their basic codex standard options.
*IF* we were to ever get a proper release again, I'd hope for GW to re-do our bread & butter stuff... Give us re-vamped kits for basic Chaos Marines + a proper Terminator kit. Bring out brand new plastic Havocs, (I mean come on, Loyalists have had 2 freaking plastic Devastator kits now!!), and a kit for Chosen who are still entirely without a proper kit.
Leave the Cult units to drip down alongside Daemonic releases.
Of course, this being GW, we'll probably get something like new plastic Plaguemarines and 3 new clam packs because we apparently don't have enough HQ models yet!

Well Plaguemarines are absolutely coming as GW will look at those as one of their top selling CSM kits (because what quasi-competitive Chaos player doesn't have these?) that they can revamp and selling X thousand a quarter. And 3 new clampacks are coming because GW can charge £18 sterling for a single PA model with no options, compared to £25 for 10 models with dozens of leftover bits and sprue, meaning they make almost 8x the cash per gram of plastic and use less grams of plastic overall so they can make more £18 plastics.

Still amazed with SM fitting 12 guys in a Land Raider and Chaos not being able to do the same.
Aparantly the Codex Astartes had some yoga in there for better transport optimisation.

I think the staple excuse for this is that....
Heresy-era Chaos Marines should not have newer equipment. Admittedly we should probably have better stats or abilities to compensate...but GW have that covered too.
We don't get 'Veteran' level stats and abilities because these Chaos Marines aren't Heresy-era Marines, they're renegades.
Yeah, the worst of both worlds.
I'm still amazed by this logic. Seriously, GW wants money? Give us seperate Legions, Renegades and Lost and the Damned books and push the ally system on us yet some more. We Chaos players will probably willingly buy into it because anything is better than the ancient pile of gak we currently have.

If Forgeworld is any indication, Chaos players are easily among the most frugal with our wallets, considering how readily we devour things like the Renegades & Heretics, all the various Legion upgrade packs, daemon engines...
I know that if GW were to re-release Chaos properly next year with say 3+ books; Chaos Space Marines, Daemons, Lost and the Damned, Daemonkin/whatever else, I'd wouldn't hesitate to drop the $200+ just on the books alone!
And with proper kits coming with all that?!
Yeah, my wallet will be running away from me.

New Cult marines must be a nightmare for GW from a new release standpoint.
There is no way any of them could be dual kits really. Nor could you easily make decent upgrade kits for the standard marines.
A plague marine looks nothing like a rubric marine which at the same time looks nothing like a noise marine etc.

Wasn't there some kind of hint at Chaos at the end of WD?

As in this digital only release?
This eBook collection contains three eBooks in a zip file, each adding a different facet to the forces of the Hive Mind. The titles included are:
Codex: Tyranids ā Your primary guide to the Tyranids and their forces, including a complete army list for using them on the tabletop
Leviathan Rising: The Collection ā The Satys system falls under the shadow of Hive Fleet Leviathan... includes new formations to use in a Tyranid army
Shield of Baal: Leviathan ā The Tyranids invade the Cryptus system, and the Imperium stands against them. Includes a new Hive Fleet Leviathan detachment, new datasheets and new formations Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yes but could be anything (warscrolls; massive army);

The reliable sources have all said that this year will see a whole slew of Chaos release of the Blue variety for AoS, with the only 40k bone being a rumored new plastic Rubric Marines kit.
Hopefully there's some new Chaos Daemons stuff within all of that, (Sad Panda seem to gently hint at it), as that will also hopefully at least give a bit of 'tied us over' on the 40k side of things...
Tzeentch Daemons especially need some massive help right now, as our shooting went from a decent risk/reward in 6th, to non-existent in 7th due to the changes to the Psychic phase. (and Warpflame is now a massive pita to deal with, since we've lost the ability to saturate a target(s) with simple volume of shots/wounds...)

Really wish someone would close this rather than letting the pure speculation continue. I keep coming in expecting some nids news so I can justify picking up that new nids box set.

Duh looking for nids in a chaos thread. That's asking for disappointment.

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.
Welcome to Fantasy 40k
If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.
Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.
