Singer David Bowie has died at the age of 69 following a battle with cancer.
His son confirmed the news and a statement was released on his official social media accounts.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," it said.
"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
The singer only released his latest album Blackstar on his birthday on Friday.
There had been rumours about Bowie's health for years.
His last live performance was at a New York charity concert in 2006.
Blackstar, which includes just seven songs, has been well received by critics.
Bowie's breakthrough came with 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
His hits include Let's Dance, Space Oddity, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel, Rebel, Life on Mars and Suffragette City.
Sadly confirmed as true by his son on Twitter.
I'm inarticulate as F. Today is certainly.. Yeah.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Kilkrazy wrote: There's no doubt that Bowie was hugely influential in the development of pop/rock music and a very creative, interesting person.
One of my favourite anecdotes was that he was visiting the home of his friend, and a young woman there was very nervous to meet him. She was a hairdresser, so to put her at ease, he sat in a chair and allowed her to cut his hair so she could speak with him.
Well damn, this is bad news to wake up to. I'm not a fan of all of his work, but even the stuff I don't like has been majorly influential and the music world as a whole will be the worse off for his loss.
Not only a great creative talent, but a kindly and decent man,
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."

Holy gak. This was an unwelcome surprise. Didn't he just release a new album like last week or something?
Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)
If you've seen the sort of suffering that cancer brings, then you'd realize that Fraz is being serious.... So while it's not exactly sad that his suffering is done, it is still sad and painful losing someone.
I only relatively recently got into his music (about a year or so ago), but it still left a profound impact on me, so this was definitely some gakky news to get online to.
