For me when 3rd ed came out, and the new land speeder was launched. I just loved the look of the model. Ironically I played dark eldar and orks, and never owned more than the starter one.

warhammer 40k mmo. If I can drive an ork trukk into the back of a space marine dread and explode in a fireball of epic, I can die happy!

Typhus. He's such a kickass model. I started part of a CSM force and eventually sold them, but kept my Typhus model that I'd spent 6+ hours on. He's still my favorite and currently rocking as my Herald of Nurgle in my Daemons army.

For me, my interest was piqued with the dawn of war RTS games- soulstorm in particular for the sisters as I loved the idea of their army.
What tipped me over the edge was a modeling night with some friends (I'd been making fun of their nab dolls for a long time) I put together a space marine and had a blast doing it ( apparently the loin cloth I'd put over his groin was actually a purity seal which lead to a good amount of laughs).
About a week later I went with one of my friends into the local gw store and found a box of 10 sisters and that was the start.

When I first started, it was the metal scouts, Inquisitors, and the metal Grey Knights. My first real army was Daemomhunters, I thought that they looked the best, being able to pull bits from other armies and make it all mesh together. It was nice to have an army that wasn't just repeats of the same looking guy wearing the same looking armour as everybody else with just a weapon swap. Tons of character in that army.

Riptide. In DoW DC it was the Tau Hammerhead and its rialgun of death I loved and the broadsides. Also Skyrays. So that got me interested in Tau and then the first model I seen to make me want to actually model Tau was the Riptide. As cool as battlesuits are I hope we see some cool new Tau vehicles and auxiliaries. I like all aspects of my chosen main army. Not just one thing.

Typhus. First game I ever played he was my warlord, and walked through so many units with man reaper and plague zombies. My opponent probably let me, but oh well.

Such a characterful, cool model.

Came across a copy of White Dwarf in my local newsagent. I'd never heard of it or Games Workshop, but had played a fair bit of Dungeons and Dragons. The WD was introducing a new type of space marine wearing "Terminator" or "Tactical Dreadnaught" armour. That's what hooked me.

That’s what got me into Eldar. I’ve got a soft spot for grav-armor, and it hit all the right buttons.

I honestly don’t remember my first 40k model. It was probably splitting a RTB01 box with a friend, but I don’t recall.

Tau hammerhead. There were a lot of cool models that got me excited about the game back then but the hammerhead is probably number one.

It wasn't a particular model for me, but the Dawn of War games. They were definitely my gateway into 40k. Did I know what the hell was going on? No- but the lore was cool and the characters were cooler. Hell, the first models I actually got were one of those dinky 3 tac-marine sets. I eventually went with orks though because in general I love orks and dwarves, and since the squats were om-nom-nomed by the lore, orks it was.

I would have been around 11 or 12 years old, my older brother had just gotten into the game back around the turn of the century. He started playing Orks, and me being the younger brother that I was decided to immediately copy him and join the hobby with everyone's favorite Ultramarines! I loved the look of the dreadnoughts. I collected for about a year getting 2 tacs, a 5 man termi squad, some devistators and an HQ. Then they sat terribly painted and unused until I was in university where I donated them to my cousin and started my guard army back in 5th and haven't looked back since.
