Also good as a delaying tactic. Drop the troops some where secure and use the transport to soak up damage. Rhinos have saved me in close games by forcing my opponent to either ignore it and walk around or waste a turn shooting/assaulting a 35 point tank.
Just to clarify, Its legal to take a gladius of nothing but pods, deploy the troops on he board, then drop 10-12x pods in front of their army or behind it boxing them in with EMPTY pods.
37,500 pts Daemon Army of the Gods
35,000 pts - X - Iron Tenth
15,000pts - Firehawks
10,000 pts - Nighthaunt
Dkok - 1850

Don't box them in. Instead use the Drop Pods to create a maze they have to navigate. That's significantly more fun.

And when a load of models are heading for a gap between pods - drop another pod in.

That's so... evil.

I am totally going out and buying ALL THE DROP PODS and two demicompanies (with just the bare minimum) just so I can pull off the "moving maze" tactic.

I think the best option is the Flesh Tearers Detachment for Blood Angels. The requirement is 1HQ, 1Troops and 1 Fast Attack with 5 Fast Attacks possible, among other things.
So... if I have my math right...
6 Flesh Tearers Detachments, each has a Techmarine and 5 basic Scouts. 3 have 5 Drop Pods and 3 have 6 Drop Pods. 1820 points.
That's 34 Drop Pods. 17 come in on Turn 1. The other 17 come in as you roll for them. That's some good times right there. You could make a really nice maze with 34 Drop Pods.
I totally want to do this. I might try this with Solo Cups and report back.

Kriswall, I want to face that list with my pure mucolid list.
The sheer hilarity would be awesome.

Why not just take two Battle Demi Company's and get the drop pods for free? That could net you 12 free pods. Find a way to sneak in some scout bikes with locator beacons and now you can place them at will.
Automatically Appended Next Post: For even more lulz, put in deathwind missile launchers to make the maze a bit more killier.
Then paint your Space Marine captain to look like David Bowie from Labyrinth.

This is more of an economics exercise. Your 12 free pods aren't really free. Each requires the purchase of a corresponding unit. That takes points away from your 1850 limit.
The locator beacon sounds like a good idea, but Drop Pods actually become more accurate as they have less and less space available. In that sense, the beacons aren't necessary. The missile launchers are nice, but the cost means you can take fewer pods.
Painting your Warlord to look like Jareth the Goblin King is a brilliant move. I like it. My buddy is a huge Jareth fan. I know I can make this dream a reality now.

I have never seen Labyrinth and am probably damned for it. Closest joke I can come to is taking a minotaurs chapter, a Doombull chaptermaster, and making the maze that way lol

Battlecry: Welcome to this maze of mine, a tour is in order!
Spoiler:
mine a tour... minotaur... never mind I guess minotaur captains aren't promoted for witty catch phrases.

I calculated and the pods alone for that army would cost over 1500 bucks

hahaha! This is a fantastic (and devilish) idea! YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL DROPPODS.
And yeah, I've tried this trick a number of times, sending empty rhinos up the field (2 at a time) with like, some bikes or something, just to see if I can get my opponent second guessing. Of course, this is way more effective in larger games, like apocalypse: in smaller (2000pts) games, my opponent is more likely to know/figure out that the rhino's aren't loaded (they can see what's on the board, have a rough idea of what things cost, and can do the math). But in apocalypse games, it's fantastic, because there are so many models on the table/in reserve that there's no way to be certain what's coming or going: they actually have ot wrack their brains about whether or not I"m bluffing.

If you're worried about the dollar cost, may I suggest checkers?
Seriously though, nobody needs 35 actual GW Drop Pods. We're going to try this out, but do so as an exercise in proxying. Upside down red Solo cups are about the perfect size and shape to count as a Drop Pod.
