Greetings!

I am about to get my hands on a Tau Stormsurge, and as most of you know it is a beast. However I don't want to become that guy.

I generally don't like D weapons, as killing someone's high wound/hull in one shot is lame; and the Stormsurge has 4 long range (one use only) destroyer missiles which I think will put off most people.

How much would you reduce the cost of the Stormsurge if those missiles were just the standard Seeker Missiles?

Cheers
Taemu

Personally, if you go down that route, I'd suggest the answer be "none at all" until you get some first-hand experience with it. Start from there, and then after some experience you'll be in the best position to make that call yourself.

On paper, the Stormsurge needs a lot of markerlight support for those things to be reliable. The chance of it one-shotting most things is small even with that.

Yup, without a markerlight, they are just Seeker Missiles with AP1. Admittedly, AP1 is useful, but it's not like fusion blasters or heavy rail rifles are hard to come by.

What's actually scary about the Stormsurge is the ability to drop S10 AP2 Ordnance large blasts virtually anywhere that it has LOS to, plus the ability to puke out a positively terrifying amount of S5 dakka. That, and the fact that it's pretty hard to kill. (I think it probably dies more easily than the Riptide against light to medium weapons, though)

As stated, you'll need 1 ML per destroyer missile to get the D table, and still roll to hit with unmodified BS unless you spend more MLs. Just make sure you fire all your D missles you want that shooting phase at once, because being gargantuan doesn't mean you ignore the shooting rules (fire all of 1 type of weapon at once) even if you can fire all at different targets. You still fire all D missiles declared at 1 target because its the "same weapon"

I am in agreement with most of the posters here. There is a high chance these missiles will never see D level power activated so really they can't be priced accordingly.

But for fun.

Seekers are 8pts for a broadside or vehicle to take as an upgrade.

Str8 ap3

vs

Str8 ap1

Destroyers should be, what 25pts? Why - negate all armor - thats gotta be worth a few points. then D profile has to be worth 12-15pts?

Thanks for all the replies!

Guess I will have to field them first before I can decide on anything. Just must be my distaste for D weapons.

I'd price the missiles at the cost of whatever pathfinders and other marker units cost, the surge costs X points, but to be effective you have to spend a fair amount more on it, so I consider it's base cost as being higher than it actually is.

Only getting the Stormsurge because I'm struggling against some players who bring Eldar Wraithknights and Imperial Knights.

Though since i didn't want to use the destroyer missiles at first, might have been a bit counter-intuitive.

He has tried both the range and melee D weapon variants against me. I did much better when it was the melee variant; still lost but less of a steam-roll.
