Interesting how close the poll is staying. Based on what I've read online, and based on the majority of the comments in this thread, I would have thought I was one of the few who actually prefers the new fluff.

New fluff > Old fluff

Theres stuff from the Newcrons i like, Lychguard are cool, Praetorans are neat, the Ghost ark is cool in concept but the model looks stupid. Cypteks are an awesome concept, mad scientist Necrons, but have gotten lamer in the new book.

I could get past the mustache twirling if they hadn't taken away Pariahs!!!

Don't get me wrong, I like the old fluff too. I originally got into Necrons (and the 40k universe in general) from Dawn of War, and the Necrons were amazing (they were also based on their 3rd edition codex). Granted, I still much prefer my Overlords having actual goals and thoughts and such, and I don't think I could live without my Lychguard, Deathmarks, Night/Doom Scythes, and everything. Those were the models that made me fall even more in love with the 5th edition codex.

The Old Lords did have goals, they just didn't really talk, i mean Deciever Lords where Tzeentch level schemers. Also im pretty sure they new models would still mesh fine in an Oldcrons force.

Hell if i ever actually get around to making my Necron army they are all gonna follow the Nightbringer, as in the Original. Cuz someone up.

I do wish the C'Tans at least had the old Statline that they did. Make them Gargantuans, and make them scary as gak. The fact that they're "shards" now is a little weird, but I can work with it.

Really they need more reliability on that Powers chart, oh and not having a 4+ armor for no reason. Seriously, they have a 4+ invuln, what do they need that armor for? Other than that, the Nightbringer is plenty terrifying.

A "Cthulhu-style faction" would be Chaos Daemons.

"Ancient Being awakens. Reality ends. Do not pass Go, do not collect 200 Throne Gelt." That is Cthulhu. There's no combating the Old Ones. There's no resisting them. They don't hate you, or even really notice that you exist. That they hail from dimensions and spaces wholly alien, and completely inimical to our own, is just their state of being. When they arrive, they bring their reality with them, which destroys our own. "The Old Ones Were, the Old Ones Are, and the Old Ones Shall Be. They will Rule where They once Ruled" as the Black Book says.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, the 4+ armor save is stupid.

Yeah, why would they talk to people?

Deciever Lords did, but then again, they where sadistic bastards. I mean did you read some of the Deciever's lore? That thing was evil on a whole new level.

-Convince people they are happy and skipping through a meadow

Reality-They are skipping through a field of razorblades barefooted while its raining acid.

Indeed.
To use my analogy before, Deceiver lords are like that kid who taunts the insect he's dismembering.

Daemons are very much interested in mortals, though. They're, well, demons. Caring about mortals is what they do. And in this case they wouldn't at all exist without mortals, being as how they sprang from their shadows disturbing the warp and would cease to be without mortal emotion. The gods are vast and alien in their way but they very much have an intimate relationship with humans et al.

C'tan have no interest in mortals other than as a harvest or any relationship to them other than as reapers. The necrons are an aberration because they were the first and gave the c'tan the ability to perceive and interact with organic life. The warp and such has more of the "gibbering incomprehensible chaos" angle but the c'tan are a closer match for the "ageless, pitiless alien lords" angle.

Well, looking at my copy of the 3rd edition Necron book, it just talks about how the Flayed Ones drape themselves in skin and terrify the enemy. There's nothing about any sort of Eldar virus or bug in the system. Index Xenos: Necrons doesn't mention anything deeper either.

The only mention about the Eldar and Flayed Ones come from some Newcron fluff about Craftworld Alaitoc infecting the Bone Kingdom with the flayer virus.

Huh, that's odd.
My codex doesn't mention that either. I know that they talk about that somewhere, but I can't remember the source.
Was it xenology?

Not in Xenology. In depth lore about necrons didn't really turn up in Xenology except that the supposedly dead radical Inquisitor was actually a Flayed Lord wearing the skin and flesh of a human and showing that A) Oldcron Lords had personalities, B) Oldcron Lords could talk, C) still maintaining a level of mystery about the Oldcrons as a whole making you want to scream for more when Xenology concluded.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

The sheer amount of actually interesting lore that could be told instead of that powermonger kid-stuff Ward came up with is just saddening.

The Deceiver could have created so many interesting bodies and forms of Necrons to carry out the C'tan plans. Like that Flayed One lord, i.e. Necrons actually invading mankind, similar to what The Void Dragon does with the Adeptus Mechanicus, but with actual Necrons stalking humans. Any good author could write extremely good stories about the lurking power in the 40k universe, the tale of a race that killed itself and is now led by the most powerful beings in the universe who draw their schemes in the background.

God, I hope Matt Ward never gets a job again.

I was always bummed that when they fleshed out the Oldcrons of 3rd ed from what they had in 2nd edition, they didn't use the opportunity to make them remnants of the Iron Men, back for revenge. The Tombs could have been Dark Age stasis vaults, and the C'tan could have been ancient beings they made a deal with to gain the power to revolt against humanity back at the end of the Golden Age.
