In almost every army list thread there is someone who suggests that you don't take armour because in a comp environment there will be hundreds of Grav users. The only problem is I have never faced Grav, I have never even seen someone play with it even though we have three space marine users in our group. On top of that I have played space marine armies outside of our groups several times and never once encountered a single Grav weapon. Is this normal for other 40k players? Has anyone else never faced Grav?

Well it's kind of similar in our group too, 3 SM players including me. I play Crimson Fists so I use mainly just bolters, the Salamander player uses Flamers and Meltas, and the Ultrasmurf player uses a variety, but doesn't spam.

My gaming group just "grav'd up" and I suspect it'll mean that they all get unhappy with grav after dealing with all the daemons, tyranids, and orks we have running around. In a situation where it's all Eldar, Tau, Knights, and SMs running around though I can understand why people think it's grav or nothing.

I see grav spam every time i fight marines. Not grav bikes. Just grav centurions with grav amps. the problem is that centurions have bolters as well as grav guns so its not like they can't deal with low armor units as well... what gets me is the gun wounds based on armor value and then is also AP2. If it wasn't AP2 it wouldn't be so damned overpowered. The better your armor the easier it is for me to wound you cause i don't care what your toughness is, and then I just skip your armor anyways. With a 36"range an abilities like that I consider grav spam to be worse than scatter spam.

In "competitive games", I see the grav centurions with the divination librarian. In more " casual games", I do not see them at all.

Depends entirely on your meta, as with most things. Around me there aren't any grav-spammers, but even if there were, they wouldn't fare well (too much Renegades, Daemons etc.)., but I imagine we would see more grav if our Tau and Eldar players became more active, for example.
It's a great way of dealing with Wraithknights, Riptides and Stormsurges, but is easily stopped by a Void Shield Generator.
The meta is local and it is circular. As soon as Knights came out, they were hot stuff, they were everywhere. Then people adapted to knights, and they were gone. Then people stopped bothering with anti-armour/knight weapons, because there were no knights. Then the Knights came back. Et cetera ad infinitum.

In my experience, the biggest WAAC players have all been Space Marine players and so spam the hell out of grav.

But the strange thing is we have people who spam knights, wraithknights, lemon russes, bloodthirsters and even someone who takes only space marine infantry. So it isn't exactly like taking Grav weapons would be a bad thing in our local group.

I only play against my friend who has orks and Raven guard. He has no grav yet but I have used a squad of bikers with grav in a game against him to see how good they actually are.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

It depends on whether these SM players are the types to go around breaking all the weapons off bikes and their tacticals to add Grav guns. Given that the only real source of gravguns so far is the tactical squad, something people already have 4-5 of anyway, there's little need to buy more. I have 5 Tactical squads now and only 1 has Grav because 2 are from BAC and 2 are older, so didn't have Grav at the time, plus I have no grav now to replace it with.

One thing that might explain it is the people in your group are not buying new space marines kits. One of the reasons my army doesn't have a ton of grav besides my dislike of spam is that I simply don't have the bits right now to equip each squad with a grav gun even if I wanted to.

I just faced a Gladius list where the SM player had 6 five-man units with 1 Grav Cannon scouting up in his free Rhinos. I was using Eldar (scatbikes & WK) w/ GK allies (2 DKs). I couldn't move out of range because of Vanguard deployment trapped me in a corner, so I conceded after turn 1. Good times.

If you're spamming scatterbikes, Wraightknights and Dreadknights you deserve a minmaxed spam list yourself. Run with the big dogs and eventually a bigger dog is going to take issue with you

In casual games, I actually only have 1 Scatterbike unit (Farseer protection), the rest have Shuricannons for fluff. But any game vs a Gladius, Necron Decurion, or Tau with any formation is not a casual game. All the "Big Dogs" as you say. Arguably, fielding a Nemesis Strike Force is gimping my Eldar because even though the DKS are amazaballs, 300pts has to be spent on a Libby and Terminators that ususally just die. Cuz, ya know, Grav (see how I brought it back on topic )

The actual grav weapons are kinda hard to come by. Sure, they are out there, but not in any sufficient quantity to spam the way some players want to. If you want to spam Grav, then it's going to cost you $$. New(er) players are more likely to be able to spam grav than a veteran that hasn't bought a lot of the new kits.
Grav is great against MSU and pretty good against vehicles. Hoard armies and non-MSU will give you fits. That's probably why you'll only see a unit (like Cents or a couple bikes) with grav, and not the entire army. GW was smart in only putting one grav cannon in the Space Maine Tactical box, forcing you to buy more Space Marines. Contrast that with Eldar Bikes where each sprue comes with 3 bikes and 3 scatter lasers...

Oh, well as long as you only took shuricannons on most of your hilariously undercosted jetbike/WK army, then that's totally fine /sarcasm
To remain on topic, All the new marine players here take grav (Including myself, as I bought a skyhammer when it came out), none of the guys who had decent sized marine armies beforehand have bought more kits to have grav on any of their stuff. Bar 1 player, grav generally doesn't get used in friendly games, but it comes out for tournies 100% of the time when someone takes marines.

I have grav on my Centurion Devastators (WYSIWYG) and I've added grav-guns to my one unit of Bikers.
I rarely bring Bikers to the table, except if I field my full Battle Company, which is rare.
My Centurions also never go into battle with Librarian accompaniment, and seeing as I only ever seem to fight Orks, they never make their points back, except in diverting enemy attention.
Grav isn't bad when taken sparingly, but grav-spam, like anything else, is bad.
