Only when a unit is already over priced and needs protecting.

like grav command squads and the likes.

otherwise its not really ever worth it.

I've never used one, but I have 2 built ready to be painted just for kicks. I've heard they're good on bike Command Squads.

FNP is excellent on a T5 bike squad... makes for annoyingly resilient marines, especially if they're willing to Jink. I haven't been running them long, but they've already stood up to grav Centurions, Kataphron Destroyers, literally hundreds of Tau overwatch shots. Totally worth the points in my limited experience.

Every time I take a command squad. Apothecaries are pretty much the reason to take one. They add another layer of survivability on the squad. If you just want an alpha strike, sternguard do it better, special weapon spam if better on bikes.

A command squad can be tailored to assist your HQ, and make him tougher. Due mostly to the FNP from the medic. The 5+ might not seem like much, but when coupled with invulns/armor/cover saves can make a huge difference at the right time.

15 points for FNP on your unit. Why the hell not? BA have to waste an HQ slot and buy a character for the same benefits.

If you make even one FNP roll on your bike command squad, the Apothecary already made his points back. Always take one if you have the option. If I could, I'd field 3 RW Command Squads all the time but it's not really worth it because I can only take one Apothecary :(

Its also nice as they are a character IIRC so you can sneak challenge things.

Two general rules:

1) If the squad is large (15-20+) then it's going to benefit from FNP and be a solid cornerstone of your army

2) If the squad is very expensive, meaning that just by saving one with FNP you effectively 'make your points back' then its worth it

This. Dark Angels are a good example - if you take even a smallishy sized Ravenwing/Deathwing command squad, FNP can be a huge benefit.

On a related note, what are the other sources of FNP in the game? The OP was asking asking about apothecaries, and that's the limit of my experience, but I'd be curious if there are other sources through character or wargear, especially for Imperium armies... it would be fun on a Battle Sisters power armor blob with a priest, although maybe overkill at that point. For Xenos armies, I'd like to know what to target to take it out when possible... sorry if that's a bit of a hijack, but it seems relevant.

I might be wrong but i think biomancy has a way. but i cant remember if its a unit based or individual based.

I believe BA priest cant hand it out as its only for BA but i might be wrong as well.

Khorne has a blood tithe that gives FNP; it's shocking how durable a 5+ invuln, 5+ FNP daemon can be.

Orks have Pain Boyz, which are really Apothecary equivalents. Space Marines have a named Apothercary (Shen?) available to the Salamanders via the Badab War books. He grants a 4+ FnP. Certain Tau Empire models can take FnP as a wargear upgrade. Almost every army has some source of FnP.

Space Wolves have Wolf Priests but that's a really poor FnP.

I have a vague recollection of BA priests giving FNP to Thunderdome so I'd imagine you can give it out.

Biomancy has a 4+ FNP through endurance

Orks have pain boyz

then you have medics IG wise and apothecaries of all marine flavors

My apothecary definitely earns his keep in a melee oriented biker command squad with beatstick HQ. Otherwise he's a fluff choice in infantry command squads.
