Subject: Boaty McBoatFace name vetoed, but the legend lives on.

The UK's new polar research ship is to be named RRS Sir David Attenborough, despite the title "Boaty McBoatface" previously topping a public vote.
A website inviting name suggestions had attracted huge interest, with Boaty McBoatface the runaway favourite.
But Science Minister Jo Johnson said there were "more suitable" names.
On Friday, days before Sir David turns 90, it was announced that the £200m vessel will be named after the world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster.
Sir David said he was "truly honoured" by the decision.
While the polar ship itself will not be named Boaty McBoatface, one of its remotely operated sub-sea vehicles will be named Boaty in recognition of the vote.
James Hand, who first suggested the flippant moniker, said he was pleased the name would "live on".
In a tweet, he also said that RRS Sir David Attenborough, which came fourth in the public vote, was a "fitting and excellent choice".
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-36225652
So the vote is dead and we lost, however they will name one of the subs Boaty in it's honor. Well, a consolation prize, but better than nothing.

Boaty McBoatface would definitely have been a more memorable name. It is not like Attenborough needs any more stuff named after him.

I'm torn, boaty was awesome, but Attenborough deserves it. Eh, good enough- would rather have a monument to a naturalist than how stupid it is to let the internet decide something.

They should at least have a plaque on there with "Boaty McBoatface" that would be fine with me.
Though a sub named in honor is a decent second choice

Awesome compromise. I'm surprised they even officially recognized the name to begin with, let alone named one of the subs boaty.

Subs are referred to as "boats" all the time. Boaty is a fitting name for a smaller than normal sub.

It's nice that they've named one of the subs Boaty, but I still think it's a major cop out. Why have an online poll if you are going to pick the name in fourth place?

Well, they did specifically state that it was a non-binding poll. In the end, they are the ones who pick the name, the poll was just for suggestions. Having a ship named the RRS Boaty McBoatface would have been totally awesome though, it is a shame they missed out on this marketing opportunity.

I can understand not plumping for Boaty or Poppy--as nice as they might be--but Henry Worsley placed third above Attenborough, and why he wasn't chosen instead baffles me, especially as he was incredibly relevant to the arctic.
That's my real issue with this. Even a democratically selected -serious- choice was dismissed. It makes you wonder why they bothered asking in the first place. They didn't say they'd go with the selection, but that only really justifies not picking Boaty or Poppy, as they've little to do with the mission of the vessel. Not picking Worsley is pushing it.

Especially when you consider that boats like this aren't usually names after living people.
