Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

Time to pick a theme for next month's challenge! As usual, the poll runs for 2 days, the winner will be the next theme and the runner up gets another go next month.

Supporting Cast: The model should be one with a non-combat role, such as a medic, musician, standard bearer, spotter, general or engineer ect. Note these models may still carry weapons, but preferably posed and painted as to not be using them.

Heatwave: The model should in some way involve, be using or related to fire or heat, for example a Space Marine carrying a flamer, a wizard hurling a fireball or a flame elemental/demon ect.

Mighty Heroes: The model should be one that is particularly powerful or of high rank, typically an army commander or great warrior.

Giant Slayers: The model should be equipped or themed in such a way that it poses a threat to much larger or more powerful enemies. For example, this could be a Guardsman with a meltagun or an mortal warrior wielding an magical weapon.

TBH... I feel that "Mighty Heroes" feels awfully redundant as a category. The only time that you can't paint a character model as an entry is when the category specifies a rank and file dude.

In fact, a Mighty Hero is a valid choice for everything other than supporting cast... and you could make the argument that support casters, medics, engineers, ethereals, commissars etc. can be heroes in their own right.

Arm your hero with a plasmagun, meltagun or a flamer and you've got yourself a heatwave (AND a Giant Killer).

I went for Mighty Heroes as I've got a few HQ's that need paint.

In fact, anything but Supporting Cast, otherwise I'll have to buy something and post my shame in the Count Your Unpainted Mini's thread.

Is no fun, is no Blinsky!

I agree, Keezus.

I voted for Mighty Heroes because I've got a lot of character models that need some love, not to mention a certain Greater Daemon of Khorne that's been pointing at his axe and then at me lately...

I actually could do something for every category, so like every month I'll list my possibilities:
Supporting Cast: I've got 2 Tau Ethereals that could use some paint.
Heat Wave: I've got some Ravenwing Black Knights with Plasma Talons (those are pretty hot).
Mighty Heroes: I have a LOT of character models, both 40k and LotR, that need some painting love, but I'll probably do the aforementioned Bloodthirster.
Giant Slayer: I could do a Tau Crisis suit with Fusion Blasters, or my Dark Angels Combimelta sarge. I could probably get away with Belial under this theme as well (he did face off against Ghazghkull Thraka, after all).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

well, I think it's a pretty safe bet that it'll wind up being "Mighty Heroes"...I've really only got one model left in my hoard that I'd want to do for that category, and to be honest, he kinda scares me

I can't really vote for "Supporting Cast", because that's basically my entry for this month ...actually, same goes for "Giant Killer", now that I think about it...

think I'll go for "Heatwave" - it's a nice, kinda different category, and I'd kinda like to see what you lot do with a bit of fiery inspiration...and it'd give me an excuse to paint some burnaboyz I've had sitting around for ages

...I have to admit, I was kinda hoping for something vehicle-themed, but it's all good...and I've just had a couple more ideas for these categories too, so I should still have something, no matter what gets picked

Difficult choice:
I have a nice master of ordnance who Is just holding her binoculars that would be a nice non-combatant...

I have a large number of figures with fire-based weapons that I could paint, including a penitent engine...

I have more mighty heroes than I can shake a stick at, including Abbadon, Eldrad, Maugan Ra, Kaptin Baddruk...

As far as giant slayers go, I have an assassin that needs painting...

So... *rolls d4* ... Heatwave it is...

haha...oh the temptation is there...but I'm not sure if I'm quite crazy enough yet to attempt heavy conversion work on both a trukk and a warboss and get them both nicely painted, all within a month - plus it might be stretching the theme a little too liberally

if "Mighty Heroes" gets picked, I think I'll have to go with my Zhadsnark "Da Rippa" model...I picked him up pre-assembled in a second-hand lot about a year and a half ago, and I've only been brave enough to go as far as to give him a coat of grey primer ...such a great-looking model with so much detail...I've been putting it off for ages because I'm dreading giving him anything less than a *perfect* paintjob

if "Heatwave" gets picked, I'll most likely paint up a squad of burna boyz...I've had them floating around for a while too...and I would like to try stuffing a trukk full of them and send 'em round barbecuing things

"Supporting Cast"...think I've got some old metal mekboyz kickin' around somewhere, they could work...

"Giant Killer"...hmm...kinda struggling with that theme, most of the stuff I have that would really fit is already painted...guess I could maybe do some deffkoptas? regular ork boyz flying rickety little helicopters, shooting rockets at big nasty tanks and monstrous creatures and the like...kinda fits?

I'd allow Deffkoptas for that, if only because back when I just had the AoBR set to play with, those buggers would get jammy rolls and take out my Dread every. Single. Game....

I went for Heatwave for something different tho I'm certain another of the topics will win because its likely to produce some great entries.

I'm sure I've got something I can come up with something for all the categories, June looks like a busy month for me already so might not be a Conversion special (maybe just a little one )

Plus I'm on an self enforced Ebay Ban atm since I have probably more models than I'll ever likely be able to paint so need to start working through my ideas and backlog.

Looted Leman Russ
Bommer
Many Flash Gitz
4 power klaw nobz.

I think I'll do a Power Klaw nob.

Yep, we have a winner. As Supporting Cast has already had 2 goes, Heatwave will make a comeback in next month's poll.

sounds good ...I'm sure the boyz see him as a mighty hero - and if they don't, I'm sure he'll soon correct them!

Well, I guess I’ll just have to paint up my 30k consuls without fanfare.

The RT Eldar with the huge meltagun can try again next month.

Planning on doing a UM captain from the dawn of time. Maybe in candy colors, depending if those new gemstone technical paints find their way into my collection and work the way I think they will...

Honestly, that last week of the month where I’ve finished one competition entry but can’t start the next one is when a lot of random stuff gets cleared off the bench.

It’s a good thing. Harness it.
