Hey guys,
Inspired by a thread I'm participating in, I have a question.
In the rules, it says the following:
Therefore, in order to be polite, all users are expected to make an effort to use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation and should refrain from using internet shorthand or other distracting methods of writing, such as writing a post completely bolded, with capital letters, in a strange color, etc.
But one of the site's moderators, motyak, said the following:
motyak wrote:Basically, don't post in red if you're not a mod.
Now, I shouldn't have posted in red, so my bad. I'll try to remember not to do so in the future. But in my mind it begs the question:
Are we allowed to colour our text, but not in red?
Or am I reading too much into this, in which case it's strictly RAW and we (non-mod/admin users) are not allowed to post text in any colour at all?
Cheers guys

There isn't a strict rule about not posting in red. Moderators conventionally use red text for visual clarity and emphasis when posting warnings and edits.
Maybe you could use dark red or orange?
The colours were put there for people to use, but it is true that black on white is the easiest format to read, with white on black probably second, so the advice not to use loads of colours is sound.

Fair enough. I just wasn't sure if there was any leeway (a.k.a. a simple case of "Avoid Using Red") or it was more strict.

The other point to consider is that not everyone views Dakka on the default colour theme. I use the worksafe theme which has a background colour of white rather than black, for example, so certain coloured texts (like yellow and cyan) are almost completely illegible.

This. Some colours are really hard to read in some themes, so we discourage posting in colour as a courtesy to those who are going to have to try to read it.

Personally I just find it annoying and distracting, generally it's best to refrain completely as it sets a precedent for other people doing it too. It would soon snowball and the screens would look like bags of skittles, there's really no need for rainbow coloured text, LEETSPK and emojis everywhere, this isn't Club Penguin.
There are some times where it's acceptable or makes sense, here's a link to it being used by me as a checklist...

It can also be a good mechanic for fiction writing when a wall of text dialogue can just become a bit too much. It's often easier to write each character's speech in a different colour as in Ratius' P+M blog.

Or in the SwapShop as Available, Pending, Sold in Green, Orange, Red.

You can type in any colour you like, as long as it's black.

Well that was fun!
The toughest for me to read in Black/Gold Scheme is Dark Blue followed by Black followed by Dark Red. The rest are all pretty legible.

So much this. When people use yellow, I can't read it at all unless I highlight it. I now just skip that post and get on with my life, ignoring the post.

Sorry. A bit of Chaos got in here. Fortunately spoiler tags are good for containing it.
I find text of dramatic colours quite annoying to read, honestly. Simple, flat colours that stand out, such as red, is all well and good (though I leave that one to the mods) but cyan and angry pink is the realm of the devil.
