What is your cut off? 5% would add in Johnson and Crazy Green Lady.

There are over 1800 "Third Party" candidates that have filed for the 2016 Presidential Election.

You seem surprised by this.

Stein has some ridiculous positions that make her completely unsuited. Her anti-vaxxer, anti-power (as in nuclear, coal, etc.), anti-military stances are absurd. Johnson is slightly less extreme, and probably would reflect a fair amount of Republicans. Interestingly, polling indicates that the third party candidates are drawing more from HRC than Trump, as she polls higher without them.

Those who think this will be a blowout may be in for a rude shock about how close it may be. I would still guess Trump draws close to 40% of the vote. Think about that for a minute.

A lot of that is going to be the "not Clinton" crowd. I know a ton of people who hate Trump, but hate Clinton more, and so will vote for him. I'm not one of them, but it seems those of us refusing to vote for either candidate are in the smaller pool.

<pats on seat next to me>

There's room for the Johson train.

He's a little bit of a kook... but, nothing like Stein, Trump and Clinton.

I don't have a magic number. Buy let's work with 5%. If 5% of the population support a party, I certainly believe that they should be represented in the national debates.

Also, I have no problem with crazies at a debate. In fact, it is informative. There are probably a good number of people preparing to vote for Johnson or Stein who indeed would not vote for them if they were put under the spotlight of a national debate.

If you want funny, go to Townhall and read the proTrump / antiTrump guys tearing each other apart. One proTrumper used the term porch monkey.

I say this as a history lesson to our younger American posters. In ancient times these racist terms were frequently bandied about. Most of the nation, even NY, evolved. I had thought such terms buried in the time of my youth, but like cancer it reappears long after the worst is over. One should occasionally, and only occasionally venture back to where these terms are still occasionally used. It reminds you of three things: how far we have come; how far we have to go; and that evil still exists here.

I live in Appalachia, and I'm here to tell you that horrid phrases like "porch monkey", "tar baby", "spearchucker", n-word, etc never ever went away.

They are used frequently by racists with other white people who the speaker assumes is also racist. You hear alot of this crap being vomited out when you're white living in white-land.

Whenever anyone says racism is dead in the US, I simultaneously laugh and cry inside, because I know better, 100%. It never went away, at least not in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

You don't have to live in Appalachia or a predominantly white state to hear those terms. I was familiar with all of them growing up in NJ, no one in our house used them and the people I knew who used them only send them when there weren't any black people around but it wasn't uncommon. Plenty of other ethnic slurs were bandied about as well. NYC and the Tri State Area is definitely a melting pot of ethnicities and nationalities and people managed to come up with derogatory names for each and every one of them.

But there's a huge difference between the Primary and the General Election. Trumps imbecilic rants may go down well with a portion of the registered republicans but registered republicans are not a sample indicative of the population as a whole.

So yesterday Trump named Steven K. Bannon his new campaign CEO. Bannon is executive chairman of the website Breitbart News. Breitbart News, you may recall, includes such figures as editor Milo Yiannopoulos. He was recently banned from Twitter for orchestrating a racist and sexist troll-swarm of Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones that temporarily drove her from the platform. This seems to be an open embracing of the "alt right" who delights in calling themselves "taboo defying" and "revolutionary" since that sounds a lot better than rabid white nationalists. Indeed, they like to claim that their support is "meta-political" (apparently they don't understand what political means) and they want to expand the range of what is considered acceptable political debate. And by that, they mean things like racial essentialism, anti-Semitism, and keeping out "the foreigners". This is the same group who so gleefully refer to more mainline conservatives as "cucks". Shockingly, angry white nationalists seem to really eat up the strong guy schtick and don't seem to mind the Russian angle.

So now Trump seems to be rejecting any pull to the center and now openly embracing media as a political arm (albeit second rate media). Also, dog whistles are now foghorns, apparently.

Apparently, this is actually a myth.

several years ago when I visited Germany, I found myself having drinks with a German journalist who struck me as fairly intelligent, so I asked her the question. She said that it is certainly not true. President Kennedy said the phrase absolutely correctly, although possibly with a thick American accent. It seems that the German language is simply not that trivial — it has subtleties that very few non-native speakers grasp. She said that if President Kennedy had said "Ich bin Berliner," he would have sounded silly because with his heavy accent he couldn't possibly have come from Berlin. But by saying "Ich bin ein Berliner," he actually said "I am one with the people of Berlin." This is her exact translation as best I can remember it. ~ http://urbanlegends.about.com/cs/historical/a/jfk_berliner.htm

So it would be correct to leave it off the list.

Milo Yiannopoulos's is a massive troll with a contingent of virulent racist and sexist followers. He is, at best, an opportunist playing off a very hateful group. His band of merry haters got him banned on Twitter because, as a profit driven company, they probably didn't want to become a cesspool of that kind of hate. But he is probably anti-Semitic with statements like:

"Generation Trump, the alt right people, the people who like me, they’re not anti-Semites. They don’t care about Jews. I mean, they may have some assumptions about things, how the Jews run everything; well, we do. How the Jews run the banks; well, we do. How the Jews run the media; well, we do. They’re right about all that stuff. … It’s a fact, this is not in debate. It’s a statistical fact … Jews are vastly disproportionately represented in all of these professions. It’s just a fact. It’s not anti-Semitic to point out statistics."

He comes across as a narcissistic nihilist, a sort of modern blackface minstrel providing cover for the worst elements of the "new right" as a stereotypical caricature. He is an outrage peddler and offers nothing of substance or value.

Another author put it well:
Like that of most bullies, Yiannopoulos’ behavior says more about his own character than it does the people he attacks. Yiannopoulos has stated that he would change his sexual orientation if he could, a desire he certainly shares with a large but quiet number of gay men yet which nonetheless indicates a deep sense of personal shame. “I didn’t like me very much and so I created this comedy character,” Yiannopoulos revealed to the website Fusion last year when asked how he became the bombastic media personality he is today. “I don’t have feelings to hurt” he admits to the New York Times. It’s an age-old story: A self-loathing gay man internalizes the bullying and social ostracism to which he’s been subjected and takes it out on others.

Designed solely to titillate its audience, “Milo Yiannopoulos” is a caricature of what resentful, misanthropic, frat bros believe a gay man to be: morally depraved, sexually licentious, and utterly self-aggrandizing. Unlike the old Milo, the new Milo gets to have creepily adoring fans and, in his telling, sex with lots of black dudes. Unlike old Milo, new Milo sells his own brand of T-shirts. And unlike old Milo, the product of a broken home, the new Milo has a “Daddy” in Donald Trump.

He was a bully who actively encouraged harassment and broke twitter's rules and go banned. It's not a "disgrace".

And it's funny to see Mr. I don't read Breitbart/I don't support Trump, now supporting a Breitbart writer and avid Trump supporter, to the point where Yiannopoulos is a mod of that cesspit of racism, sexism, Islamophobia, stupidity, and general bigotry that is /r/the_donald.

He's not even good on his own. This is a guy who has claimed that lesbians don't exist, and blamed the "gay establishment" for the Pulse shooting (because they weren't Islamophobic apparently).
But nice to see that you've fully embraced the alt-right, Whem'.

They will vote to be heard. Enough of that tuning in...somehow...to Trump and you get the impossible becoming possible. Brexit anyone?

Like I said pages ago, if Trump actually wins the phrase "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" won't just be for comedy anymore. Talk about taking everything you want to be real about your country and throwing it into the mud. The racist, petty, bigoted, so far gone from reality that reality looks like fiction, and god help us all isn't racism supposed to be "in the past" cause that's what all you right leaning people keep trying to convince me is true mud.

Also... I fething love Milo and twittah's banning is a disgrace.

Er.... I followed him on Twitter and saw what led up to his bane...

That doesn't mean I support his every stance.

Twitter eventually admitted that the actual racist/sexist post that got him banned wasn't him...

He exposed that Twitter 'unevenly' applies their rules bases on ideology.

But yes, he does come across as a nihilist that's highly critical of the latest liberal outrage machine.

This is th e guy who calls trump "Daddy" ffs
