Ok, quick update on the state of the race.

The psychic Scottish goat has called the election for Clinton:

http://www.scotsman.com/news/video-psychic-scottish-goat-predicts-next-us-president-1-4280162

But the mystical Chinese monkey has chosen Trump:

http://shanghaiist.com/2016/11/07/monkey_picks_trump.php

So early results seem mixed. With any luck, a pre-cognisant squid will come along to break this deadlock.

Did that octopuss thing not cast its vote yet?
Or did it die irrc?

edit, was it a squid?

Nah, this trend has been going on for the last 30 years, which includes both GOP and Democrat administrations. It's more complicated than blaming the Republicans.

Not really. Education is largely a state/local issue. 'Small town America' repeatedly votes Republican for the last 30 years, which means the people in charge of their education system are the Republicans who constantly attack and cut funding for teachers and education. Same (Lately...It's a relatively new issue) with health care since it's a Democratic issue, Republicans have to be against helping with it.

I still think it's more complicated than that.

I read an article about a small American town that went from a busy high street, to a ghost town when a new Walmart turned up and put everybody out of business.

Hmmm...Who do you think Walmart supports and is supported by?

Source? What kind of felons? Small time MJ possession charges?

I doubt that gives them enough time to register for today's election, what with them now being free from jail. They'd have had to register yesterday (business day) and even then have some sort of proof of residence (state prison count?). I'm not concerned if that's even remotely true.

Edit: Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/us/governor-terry-mcauliffe-virginia-voting-rights-convicted-felons.html?_r=0

He is allowing them to vote. There is nothing in there that I've seen about the ability to buy fire arms.

Myrna Pérez, director of a voting rights project at the Brennan Center, said Mr. McAuliffe’s move was particularly important because Virginia has had such restrictive laws on voting by felons. Still, she said,“Compared to the rest of the country, this is a very middle of the road policy.’’

Ms. Pérez said a number of states already had less restrictive policies than the one announced by Mr. McAuliffe. Fourteen states allow felons to vote after their prison terms are completed even while they remain on parole or probation.

I know this is hot news in ther derposphere right now because it plays to the rigged elections narrative, but the governor started doing this in April, and has been doing it in batches since then, when he announced a plan via executive order to restore voting rights to 200,000 ex-felons.

Is this a good idea? For voting rights, yes it is. There is no reason someone who commits a crime, serves their time, and then is released forever loses their franchise while of course, still paying taxes. Felons should automatically have their voting rights restored when they are released. There is no reason for them to have lost them in the first place. You want former criminals to re-enter society, after all, not forever ostracized on the fringes of it.

Firearms is a slightly stickier element. I'd lean towards "yes" but I don't want to get into my exact, more nuanced stance because it's really not salient to this thread.

It will be over when the Republican base hits that point of absolute shame where they just can't do this anymore.

Death panels wasn't it.

Birtherism wasn't it.

Donald fething Trump wasn't it.

There is zero chance that it will be blocking Clinton for 4 or 8 years, if she wins today.

Can't see the disfunction ending any time soon, then.

False equivalency?

With all due respect, that's utter horsegak.

The American public is forced with choosing between a woman who took money from a man linked to ISIL i.e Saudi Prince

or a complete and utter buffoon with a loose mouth, and you think that's false equivalency?

It is a terrible choice for the American people....

The problem with that particular vaporized horse is it doesn't really invite followups. Anyone who still believes "they're both equally bad" really is worth a sigh and a shrug at this point, at best. So, good luck with that, sigh, shrug.

You may think so, but it's public knowledge that some of the money donated to the Clinton Foundation came from Saudi Princes linked to ISIL.

I know it, you know it, and HRC certainly knows it.

Why didn't she hand that money back? Take the moral high ground? I made a mistake, I didn't really know about this guy, but now that I know, he can have his money back.

Easy easy easy, and would have drawn a line under it.

But now the whiff of corruption is over her, and will be hanging over her administration from day 1.

Not a good look for a President.

It's tough being President, people are out to get her, no need to shoot herself in the foot.

Looking at some of the last minute polls.

I still think Clinton wins easily... but, there's something to be said about "hidden Trump voters" that the polls may not accurately reflect...

Not sure I'd buy that, but eh?

Here's a couple of last minute polls:
http://us13.campaign-archive1.com/?u=99839c1f5b2cbb6320408fcb8&id=e8554a1cd7
Pennsylvania
Clinton: 46.51%
Trump: 48.43%
Johnson: 2.30%
Stein: 1.08%
Other/Undecided: 1.69%
(1300+ Respondents, MOE +/- 2.68)

Florida
Clinton: 46.13%
Trump: 49.72%
Johnson: 2.43%
Stein: 0.62%
Other/Undecided: 1.09%
(1100+ Respondents, MOE +/- 2.89)

Michigan
Clinton: 46.82%
Trump: 48.52%
Johnson: 2.89%
Stein: 0.90%
Other/Undecided: 0.87%
(1200+ Respondents, MOE +/- 2.77)

Georgia
Clinton: 45.11%
Trump: 51.58%
Johnson: 1.89%
Stein: 0.42%
Other/Undecided: 0.99%
(1250+ Respondents, MOE +/- 2.76)

I've tried poking holes in that... but, I don't see how Trump wins PA and MI.

Here's a national poll that has trump up 2%, but within MoE:
http://www.investors.com/politics/trump-holds-2-point-lead-over-clinton-as-election-day-arrives-final-ibd-tipp-poll-results/

Seems odd 'cuz in RCP, most other polls has Clinton around +3%.

I'm not dismissing that specific concern, but the "they're both equally bad" meme. I find that idea to be eminently dismissible and to be honest I think you do too. Even if you won't vote for her, I bet you don't find them equally bad.
