Hm, guess all that kinda applies to the USA and their Spanish-speaking population, doesn't it? Maybe the USA should have two official languages, nott one. Spanish, to make sure your Spanish-speaking population can get stuff done. Also English, so you can keep doing stuff the way it was already happening. Then just, you know, don't write the language laws in any way that restricts the government from doing stuff in any language imaginable when there's a need to do so.
In the most "urah Merica!" thing I'll probably ever say, the national language of America is Freedom. Part of that language is the freedom of speech, and if freedom of speech doesn't mean the right to say what you want how you want then it doesn't mean anything at all.
Yeah, I think in Canada we like freedom more than America does at this point. Sometimes I wonder why you guys bother to call yourselves the "Land of the Free" at all anymore.
Also, erm, when designing the Electoral College, didn't they give those guys the ability to choose who to vote for, so that in rare occasions, when needed, they could ensure that a guy like Trump stays OUT of office?

I find it's a constant battle against the guy on our shoulder in the devil outfit

That was Madison and Hamilton's intention when they designed it. Obviously though there were a lot more founders than just those two, and the US as a county quickly developed other ideas about how the college should function.

Yeah... sure...

Didn't all of those guys die around 200 years ago? Why are their opinions still relevant?

Yeah, I guess it was to keep a guy like Trump out of office, but really, who would they put in office that isn't a complete loon? Every option they have is pretty bad, so may as well go with what the election picked.
I could live with McMullin, too. I don't agree with him on everything, but he's not a raving untrustworthy bigoted nutbar, so he's got that going for him.

Most other Canadians I know were expecting Hillary to be a fairly standard US politician during her 4 years in office who wouldn't do anything that was really spectacular in any way, but wouldn't mess much up. Basically just status quo.
It was a pretty huge shock to us when you decided to go with Trump instead of Clinton. I've never seen a Canadian newscaster who looked like he was questioning whether he might be hallucinating or something as Peter Mansbridge did when the election was starting to go in Trump's favor.
I fell asleep before finding out who won, fully expecting to wake up to the news that Clinton won all those last states and beat out Trump into office.
Then I woke up, checked the news, re-read the headline.
Then I just sat there, contemplating whether I should go find some of my brother's alcohol to get drunk on. Because Trump's election just kinda seemed really thematically appropriate to be the moment in my life when I started drinking, but at the same time my meds would disagree with being a drinker, so I wasn't sure if it would be worth it or not..
Woah, just read that Fidel Castro died. I wonder what effect that's going to have?

This will become a said day in the history of America.
He's a narcissist and has no clue. Too bad.
I don't know, seem a lot like the political mirror image of what we've had for the prior 8 years.
Your mirror is weird and doesn't seem to get how reflections work.
I mean, if you're one of the people who decided President Obama was the Antichrist, fine, whatever, I guess pretending he's Trump works just as well. But otherwise...come on. You know better.

Well, I'm having a better day knowing that he's no longer using up oxygen that should have gone to more deserving people.
Such as?
When reflecting on Castro's legacy, let's not paint the man as a saint (he wasn't ) but let's remember the forces of history that 'made' him:
American colonialism in Latin America, its support for the corrupt Batista regime, and the dozens of crackpot CIA schemes that drove him into the arms of the USSR.
Having read numerous histories about the CIA, it amazes me that their HQ has not been stormed and burned to the ground by an angry mob of people, so inept and incompetent the CIA have been these past decades...
To sum up, nuance and balance are needed when reflecting and analyzing the life of any historical figure...

Nah, feth that tinpot dictator that used his own people and friends to gain and keep power. Two groups being wrong doesn't suddenly mean one is right and looking for a silver lining from donkey-caves is a silly game that only leads to finding a bad smell. I had a longer post written up but decided that brevity was better in this instance.

Well, ok, I will follow your example of brevity. Fidel Castro was, on balance, alright and Cuba is better off than it would've been under capitalism.
Considering how hard people have tried to kill Castro during the years and failed, I kinda won't trust he's dead until I see the body with my own eyes.

How hard? You would not believe how many crackpot schemes there were over the years.
The CIA couldn't organise a funeral in a graveyard.

They have millions of options, surely one of them is better than Trump.
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

They tried pretty hard didn't they? The less skilled you are, the harder you need to try in order to succeed. :p
CIA has managed to assassinate quite a number of people over the years, so they can't be wholly incompetent?

Set that whole normalizing of relations with Cuba initiative to Warp Factor 13! I can see the boxes of Cohibas and Romeo y Julietas on the shelf of my local tobacconist now...
