Starting a renegade/slightly traitor marine army who use a lot of cultists, but aren't as Chaosy as the GW cultists are, with the unnecessary hoods and chaos stars and general evil stuff, and aren't as well equipped/armoured or all the same like the guardsmen models are. Can anyone recommend any good alternatives?

You could get the Cultist Assualt, buy some spare bodies and blitz, and kitbash your own. The Cultist Assault box can be chopped up, and the heads and weapons can be taken, and the stars and other evil stuff sanded down.

Frostgrave Cultists would be my first port of call. Empire Flagellants as well.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I got that, and was actually quite disappointed by it. I wasn't paying too much attention and just thought 'more cultists, sweet'. turns out it was the normal cultist kit x 4 with a fancy marine champion. I thought there'd be a bit more variation to the models or you'd at least get the other autogun and autopistol/CCW guys from the Dark Vengeance box, and the heavy guys too, but no. As it stands I've now got 5 guys in semi-gimp masks armed with potatoes on a string.

Age of Sigmar Chaos Marauders. They have a suitable barbaric look but not overtly chaos. Combine with some Catachan arms and you got some decent "woodsman" chaos cultists.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Perhaps go on ebay and order the cutists from the DV box. You'll get a wider variety of figs. Shave off some Chaos iconograpy and spikes and swap a few heads and you'll have much less chaos'y looking figs.

The Frostgrave box is a good suggestion, but the figs are a bit smaller so if you go that way I strongly suggest getting some guns from Victoria Miniatures (the first gen lasguns are good) as they run a bit smaller (in a good way) than GW weapons.

If you like the Copplestone castings figures shown above, you can find additional similar figs being sold by EM4 miniatures in their "Future Warriors" line. Both lines were sculpted by Mark Copplestone in the same style, some of almost the exact same subject.
