It's that time of year again, when the horror movies come rolling out. We've got Lights Out (saw it, liked it), Don't Breathe and the Blair Witch Project (sequel?). What's your favourite horror movies, and what do you think makes a good one?

I quite like the first Woman In Black myself. It's got a good story and a seriously creepy atmosphere throughout, and that's what makes a good horror movie imo. By comparison. I saw that Nicholas Cage crap Pay The Ghost recently and...it's gak.

In the Mouth of Madness, starring Sam Neil is probably my favorite horror movie.

The only horror movie I've seen recently that wasn't a paint-by-numbers was Obscura. It's decent, worth a watch. It is a neat twist on the usual "demonic possession" trope.

Also, the first season of American Horror Story is quite good, the second is worth it if you liked the first.

My favorite horror movie is also a scifi/horror crossover, Alien. While the sequel was far better, it's a totally different kind of movie. I also like The Thing pretty well. I'm not into slasher films (like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.) at all. They don't scare me, and they really don't entertain me unless I'm really tired or something.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, all the classics. I also love the weird ones and the general thrillers, like Alien and Paranormal Activity (the first one, the rest sucked)

Ooh, my favourite genre. The Thing (the original, none of this prequel lark), Alien and Aliens, House of Wax (pretty obvious, plot but has an interesting twist), Candyman, House on Haunted Hill + Return to House on Haunted Hill, Event Horizon (loved it), Birds..... I cant actually remember all of the ones in my collection.

I have a soft spot for the American version of The Ring, it was what got me really into horror movies. It was one of the rare Americanizations that worked really well and had tons of very creepy atmosphere and tension.

And there is a sequel on the way...which I just don't know, it seems like they are doubling down on scale.

Haven't watched it, but been hearing good things about Don't Breathe. More a thriller than straight up horror.

The Thing from 1950's, or the one with Kurt Russel? I thought the prequel was fine. Nothing special, but fine, and tied into the the 1980's one well.

I watched Sinister when it came out and loved it. Rented the second one last night, having heard it was horrible. It wasn't as good as the first. But still had a few jumps. And it wasn't just a random new family; it continued with the actions of Deputy So-and-so, as he tries to stop the threat of Be'ghoul.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Huh, good to know. I'll have to pick it up. Thoroughly enjoyed the first one, creepy set up, good backstory, and solid acting.

Also, not quite horror movie, but having recently watched Sicario: holy gak. Just all around fethed up movie. More a cop drama/war thriller than horror, but some of the messages are downright creepy.

If you loved the first Sinister, you'll appreciate the second. However, the first is still top notch.

I haven't seen sinister 2 but my brother told me that it was, quote..."gak". I hope that's not the case. I loved the first one, despite how depressing it is.

I loved the first. Probably my favorite horror movie (this excludes psych thrillers like Se7en and Identity, which were near-perfect). The second was a decent follow up. Not as amazing as the first. Didn't have the suspense. But it was a nice pace of watching Deputy So-and-so try to save the day. Very little Ba'Ghoul. Few jumps including him like the first, but it was more a story of the kids he's taken, instead of him.

First one I'd honestly rate 9/10. This one, maybe a 5.5/10.

I don't know, he got pretty creepy by the end. Either way, I will agree with "awesome". The movie did a good job forcing you to be self conscious about a common vulnerability, in this case our senses. Something a good horror/thriller/slasher must do.

Never understood why people are scared by something simple as a mere movie, it may be something wrong with me but I have yet to this day watched something that made jump in my seat. But then I suppose one needs to acctualy buy into to a lot of the somewhat insane plotlines for such movies

Look at films like The Strangers. Those weren't anything extraordinary, those were regular people torturing/harassing normal people because the "monsters" were just crazy people. Not every film has insane plotlines.

Besides, I never understood why people who refuse to be scared go watch horror movies or go to haunted houses. The point is to give in to the fear, allow yourself a little bit of that adrenaline rush in a safe environment, not go "look how tough I am, I wasn't scared!"

I thought Don't Breathe was pretty good, but I wouldn't put it up to awesome status. There was a good bit of fethery that was entertaining to watch, but there was small stuff that took me out of the immersion (not that this isn't usually true of movies anyway, when you catch yourself thinking about little oddities). (example in spoiler below)

Spoiler:

The blind dude honestly seemed to ramp up his senses as the movie went along. He started as somewhat capable and then suddenly his sense of smell is superhuman.

I always liked the Puppetmaster movies as a kid.

Sinister was great to me, I loved the use of open space in the movie. It kind of played on your expectations that are based on other movies, how there's usually space to the side of a person because something is about to jump out of it. It built the suspense because I kept expecting (like other movies) something to just jump out but it never really did. I thought that was pretty clever. I need to check out the second one.

I like the Conjuring movies, and Insidious.

Its not that I think myself more tough than or less scared than others, its just that I dont get scared. Now I appriciate the art of making a good movie of this genera, and I have noting but repect for the people whom has masterd this art. And well, some of us have other people in their lifes whom likes such movies, thus I have been to a fair share of these films

Se7en was also creepy as hell because it was just one regular guy killing people. Yes, it was a psych thriller, but it was scary because it can happen. Nothing is stopping it.
Heck, the first Jaws movie is legit; it CAN happen. Great Whites CAN get that big. Once they started making them the size of mini Megalodons though, it lost its value. But the first one was legit. However, I got spoiled by reading the book first. So much better than the movie.

It's based on a movie, also one of the scariest of all times IMHO, so it's relevant. Did anybody see the premiere of the TV show 'The Exorcist' on Fox last week? I caught it and I think it looks promising. Besides, I like 'Tubular Bells'.

You've nobody to blame for your inability to be scared by movies except yourself. Your location shows "The Eye of Terror'...of course a simple movie isn't going to scare you.

Se7en was good and made for a good cinematic experience indeed. And well Jaws I think are more scary to people whom live places where the water is not near freezing for most of the year

I had Jaws ruined another way too; my grandfather was friends with the real life Captain Quint. He was modeled off a real guy who lived on Long Island. Because the real guy was still out there, still kicking and sharking, it made the movie feel even more fake to me.

Descent - even enjoyed the sequel quite a bit,

Carpenters "The Thing" and/or the Prequall - both are awesome.

Event Horizon, Alien - hell Jaws was scary to me when I was young.

Most things with werewolves in - American Werewolf in London

I'm not into slasher films (like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.)
Agreed

Totally hate and despise Scream, especially since it pretends to be clever and is just another tacky torture (the women) porn film but without the honesty of true torture porn.

Not sure what's so fake about it. The movie came out in 1975, and was pretty damn good for its time and still is today. Are you sad the real Captain Quint is still alive? Then I got some bad news for you about Jurassic Park.
