Subject: Which one makes a better "Pacific Rim" Themed Army?
|
 |

|
Hello everyone, as my Skitarii army nears completion I have already decided what my next project will be, a Pacific Rim themed army! I have been a fan of Mechs such as Gundam, Mech Warrior ect. since I was a kid and am a big fan of Pacific Rim, in particular the concept of the Jaegers I found to be absolutely awesome. Now I've discussed this with a couple of people and I've heard two different ideas and I'm curious as to what the rest of the community thinks, which book (including Forgeworld variants) do you think I should try and run this Army out of and why? Looking forward to the feedback and comments, thanks for posting!

Dreadnought army. They'll be massively out-matched just like the jaegers were.

The leviathan dreadnought is very much the hulkbuster suit.
I'd say either tau or (probably more appropriately) wraithknights.

The correct answer is BOTH. Run 3 Knights with a Riptide wing. Done

The true answer is of course to run a Titan Legion. Have you ever seen a Warlord model in real life? As someone who has built one, I can tell you that this is as dundundundundunDUNDUNDUNDUNNNN as you can get in 40k.

Or...run some Pacific Rim figures (some of the figures look to be around Knight size) with whatever rules are most fitting.

Imperial Knights, like Jaegers, are more melee oriented than the Tau.

I agree with this... plus reaver titans and warlords are probably closest to the real size of those Jaegers anyways. Give them titan power fists holding oil tankers for EXTRA dundundundundunDUNDUNDUNDUNNNN!

As aesthetics is detached from the rules, I have to go with Knights. Tau GMCs are all ranged combatants and the Jaegers from the film were fighting with fisticuffs, only using ranged weapons as a finisher.

Are you crazy (to those suggesting IK)? Tau! The whole pacific rim movie was inspired by the Gundams and mecha designs from Japan. Del Torro even looked at art of tsunamis and other ocean storms to get the waves right.
The chassis and roles of the mecha were inspired by the east, but the paint schemes were inspired by western stuff. Does that make sense? Coyote Tango's paint scheme was inspired by the cobra paint scheme from the US army but its physical design mimics a certain gundam.
So normally Tau are painted clean I would start a Tau suit army and then paint them with more western inspiration than eastern. Does that makes sense?
Edit
The Tau gargantuans are pretty potent in melee unless its against a dedicated melee gargantuan or something meant to kill large things in melee.
Edit2
I'm doing my Ta'unar in a pacific rim theme. I even called it the Danger Zero.

I think the idea of Gundams is certainly a Tau thing, but the melee focus (swords and fists) is more an Imperial Knight thing. They are certainly built to be focused in melee, like the Jaegers. Purely on combat style, I'd say Knights.

Which is why I suggested using both IKs & Tau. You get the aesthetics of the Tau with the melee of the IKs.

That is true. I wish FSE would get some cool melee battlesuits. From a mechanics point, but it sacrifices the visual design elements heavily to the point I would be hard pressed to notice an IK army that was done as a Jager since they look nothing alike except walking biped forms. The aesthetics are completely different.

A mix of Titans and Tau, really. Knights are too small for Jaegers, and the latter's looks is much more closer to Tau.
Still, voted for IKs because they are playable at lower points than Titans and have melee capacity
===
You might even compare some to 40k armies, just for fun:
Cherno Alpha - AM. Bulky, trusty, green
Gipsy Danger - SM. Protagonist, power fist
Crimson Typhoon - Eldar. Quick, lean, bizarrely looking
Striker Eureka - Tau. Most range-packing of the lot, sleek, clean, gundam-y
Monsters - well, Tyranids

Oh personality and aesthetic wise if we had to assign a faction to a Jeager? Hmmm I think it would be cooler to design a Jager for each faction instead.
Cherno Alpha is the one exception. It is clearly the Emperor's next generation sentinel that was about to go into production before gak hit the fan.

Hah! You know, it might be possible to even run an (Unbound) theme list...
Cherno Alpha: Knight Gallant
Gipsy Danger: Knight Errant
Crimson Typhoon: Wraithknight
Striker Eureka: Ta'unar (it was the strongest of the Jaegers, by the fluff, even if it didn't entirely seem that way in the movie).
Oh, and yeah, 'nids for the Kaiju, or maybe even Daemons.

Perhaps a mercenary unit who all fight together. Must be one pricey team to get that kind of fire power. Quite the individuals by 40k standards to all work as a team.

Has to be Knights, since in Pacific Rim the big robots spent a lot of time punching. Tau, even their suits, aren't really known for their punching ability.

My vote goes to the Knights as well. It just seems to fit better to what the Jeagers were in the movie. I would definitely recommend use of the Forge World ones.

While Pacific Rim is built as a homage to Mecha Anime (it's not exclusively gundams; Striker and Gipsy both have Evangelion influences) most of the designs were more in line with western designs. Cherno Alpha and Horizon Brave would not look out of place as Imperial Titans and Coyote Tango would fit in with Call of Duty (once they progress to giant robots). Only Crimson Typhoon and Tacit Ronin look like actual anime robots.
Also in terms of overall visual profile, Eldar Wraithknights are closer than Tau Suits.

They are closer in terms of profile. I'll agree there. Coyote Tango also reminds me of an actual Japanese mecha as well. It also look similar to the Ta'unar with its big back canons. We don't see too much of it though. Hence why I'm making a Coyote Tango theme'ed Ta'unar named Danger Zero.

Knights more than Tau since the Tau mechs would be more likely to shoot it while if I remember the movie right it was more melee with shooting secondary.

Shooting at point blank really. In the 3 or so minutes of actual combat in the film it is kinda melee based. If they had remembered they had a sword earlier in the movie than I'd say its more melee based.

Not sure if you're joking or not Gamgee. Those suits in the comic are Riptides (this was before the Stormsurge was released).
And if you say they don't have access to beam sabers, remember Imperial Knights don't have giant nunchucks either.
