We know the Guardian Spear statline already- S +1 AP2 Melee, Block (choose one enemy to hit dice, roll a d6, if your roll is higher than the hit is ignored), Two handed, with a bolter attached.

Although the description of the spear in the DW book does mention the bolter was modified to use the special DW ammo. I expect the Custodes to have some special ammo of their own.

The Guardian Spear was the traditional weapon of the Adeptus Custodes during the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy. The spears were halberd-like power weapons incorporating a bolt weapon. The weapon's powerful ranged and close combat duality complemented the fighting style of this bodyguard force, giving them good capabilities in both close combat and at a distance. In battle, Custodes spin these weapons in great arcs, slaying enemies with each strike be it in melee combat or from afar.[2]

As symbol of their roles as sentinel, Deathwatch Watch Masters are also given Guardian Spears

Yes, I did say "something stupid like", there are many, many other stupid things GW could do with the fluff to justify Custodes armies in 40K.

Yeah, took Horus 7 years to reach Terra with the might of 8 entire traitor legions. Knowing the difference between the HH writers and GW writers i'm sure Abaddon could do it in 2 weeks.

Before the Heresy, Custodes were often used as bodyguards for people deemed important enough to warrant that kind of protection. It wouldn't be that much of a retcon to allow Custodes units as allies for Imperial armies under the pretence of protecting someone marked by the divine will of the Emperor. The boys in gold do as they please anyway, who's to say they're not really acting on direct instructions of the Throne?

Like sort of a cooler looking Legion of the Damned.

Armies though, that wouldn't fly even in 30k.

That's what I was thinking. Basically a squad allied in would be the only way to use them in 40k(if they do allow it). I can't think of anyone with the "authority" to question the Custodus. If they say the Emperor Wills It, well then....

I swear GW does this. The people at GW can't really be this incompetent and not want to give out "excitement" or "hype" for their products to be released.

I've mixed feelings about Custodes and SoS appearing in the 40k timeframe myself, but I'd be surprised if GW make plastic models that don't end up having 40k rules in some form. As for there reasons for leaving? Perhaps the Imperial web way has become unstable/is being attacked by Chaos again and they need to head out into the galaxy to secure entryways or arcotech. They could be looking for Sensi(if we are talking Custodes might as well go for another deep cut ). Or they could go for the big one and have them looking for a reincarnated Emperor.

So... I'm going to speculate on the Custodes statline. They are supposed to be slightly better than a standard space marine. With that in mind, I'd base them heavily on the Deathwatch Veterans.

Ws 5, Bs 4, S 4, T 4, W 1, I 4, A 2, Sv 3+.

Comes standard with a Guardian Spear. Probably around 40 points per model.

With regards to justifying Custodes in 40k, Primarchs returning is a logical one. It looks like Leman Russ might be on his way back out of the Eye of Terror, but are you really going to trust some monstrous guy walking out of the epicentre of mankind's greatest enemy? Some Custodes appearing to validate his claim to be a Primarch would be a logical leap, hell some of the Custodes might actually know the Primarchs personally.

Well, they are in between marines and the Primarchs in stats, but I'd say they are closer to marines than they are Primarchs. Perhaps a 5+ invulnerable?

Every other model in a starter set has gotten 40k rules. Contemptor Dread, Cataphractii Terminators, Genestealer cult, Deathwatch, etc. I'm pretty sure Custodes will as well. Even if their "army" is but a single choice and costs a TON of points.

Thinking about that.... I think there might be an easy way to estimate their cost and abilities. If we can find out the box contents the two sides are supposed to be evenly matched. If we figure out what the 1000 sons have, then subtract the space wolves, we get the combined cost of the SoS and the Custodes.

What if they tell us that Sisters of Silence were folded into the ranks of Ordo Hereticus, or even Sisters of Battle, after they were formalized as SoB in M36? SoS were still around, in very limited numbers (that we know of) as late as M32, and they'd be a fantastic "black ops" unit to have available for witch hunting, after all....

I know, I know, that would mean GW actually paying attention to SoB, maybe even bringing them out of the obscurity of web order and e-codex only, and that would never happen.

But, then, it seems that the most reliable rumor mongers have indicated some real love, and new releases, coming for Thousand Sons, who they've similarly crapped upon and tried to ignore for many years.

Guess we'll see.

They'll be matched for the rules of the boxed game, and the scenarios and available forces, in that game. Not necessarily for 30k/40k rules.

I think it's interesting that the WD cover specifies that it includes rules for "Legio Custodes in Horus Heresy battles", and not for use in 40k. What differences there'd be for Custodes between the two time frames, beyond "can be taken with x, y, or z as allies" type differences, will remain to be seen.

Custodes are coming out. Genestealer Cult is coming out. Sisters of Silence (that happen to be SoB with topknots) are coming out.

If I hear tomorrow that GW is re-releasing SoB the day after, I'll probably stop at a shrug. Maybe a raised brow, if I feel exceptionally generous.

Given you could do pretty much all of their troops with a combi box and their vehicles with a Rhino sprue, I can't imagine a small-but-perfectly-formed Sisters release is tooooo far off.

Current releases seem driven by fanboys internally, so 'no demand' is no longer a reason... following old GeeDub logic there'd been 'no demand' for GS Cult since the pewter models stopped being available, yet here we are... boxed game and release of a mini-army. The wind truly has changed!
