Title says it all would it be more effective to twin link a weapon or to simply add another gun? From a number perspective which is more effective. Would the Vedetta be a more effective unit if it had 6 lascanons or do 3 twin linked lascanons gets more boom.

More guns. More shots mean more potential hits, which can mean more wounds or more HP lost/increased explosions result. In a game of luck, the more dice you toss the better off you often are.
The best would be more guns that all have twin linked anyway. Lots of shots that are likely to hit. :p

Always more guns. 1 Twinlinked shot will only ever yield 1 hit (unless using Necron telsa), but 2 shots may yield 2 hits, but at the very least have the same chance to hit as the 1 TL shot.

Assuming the weapons are identical and the price is the same... 2 guns is always better than 1 twin-linked gun. It's just math.
The only reason twin-linked is a thing is because it's usually cheaper or more convenient to twin-link a weapon than it is to take a second weapon.

It depends on the cost of twinlinking.
If a laz cannon costs the same for TL or another wep then it's always better to get another wep.
If it's much cheaper like 30 pts for the laz and +5 pts for TL then TL is a bit more efficent as it boosts the accuracy for 1/6th the cost of a second laz cannon.
So for example if you had 210pts to buy laz cannons you could have 7 laz cannons or 6 TL Laz cannons which would you prefer?

Actually this is a good point.
I believe the Tau codex has plenty of examples of 2 of a gun vs 1 TL gun. Usually the single TL gun is 5-10pts cheaper than buying 2 separate guns.

Another fun thing to add to "depends on the points cost," the value of the difference also depends on the model's BS.
For a gun with 1 shot regular:
For a model with BS 3, one TL gun makes 0.75 hits while two of the same gun makes 1.0 hits, a 25% increase in the number of hits.
For a model with BS 4, one TL gun makes 0.889 hits, while two of the same gun makes 1.333 hits, a 33% increase in the number of hits.
From that, the increase in number of hits goes up as BS does, so it becomes steadily worth more points as a model's BS increases.

The only time you might want a TL gun over adding more is if there is a restriction on how many can shoot.
IIRC flyers can only shoot 4 guns. So you would probably be better with 3 TL’d rather then 6 normal.
For a tank that can only fire one gun at full and snap the rest, I’m sure there is a BS breakpoint as to how 1 TL’d shot compares to 1 full, 1 snap.

Best case for a twin-linked weapon (BS3 and no other source of rerolls) it's worth 1.5 guns. Take two guns instead.

Like prev mentioned some platforms can only fire 2 weapons( Like MC's) or max 4 (flyers) so having a flyer with 8 guns is obviously not gonna be effective but having the same flyer with 4 tl guns works and is even a good boost. Same thing with MC's. The only platforms with unlimited weapon fire are fortifications and Super heavy/gargantuan (I think)

Or if points for 2nd gun is much more than linked. After all linked weapons tend to be cheaper than 2xnon linked weapon

I think it depends on BS, to be perfectly honest. When you've got IG or Orks and you're dealing with BS 2 and 3, I'd say just go for the twin-link, as more dice (using my personal experience as reference) usually only mean many more misses, e.g. I feel more comfortable with Deffkoptas and their TL rokkits than if I had the option to fire two times without TL. BS 4+, more guns for sure. The rerolls really don't improve the probability per shot at that point.
