Just from a practical standpoint? I was thinking about getting some SoH to ally with my EC and just wondered whether to buy one or the other

Not really? Justaerin are tougher and can get more out of their guns, Phoenix Terminators hit harder. If you're using Terminators as a general-purpose unit, character bodyguard, or you're in a small game Justaerin are worth looking at, if you're using them as shock troops and you're in a large enough game that you can dump a lot of points into a dedicated melee unit Phoenix Terminators are better.

Sons of Horus don't seem to complement EC to me; they work best on their own (to take full advantage of Merciless Fighters and reserves/outflank shenanigans), and both Legions function pretty similarly. Unless you've got a specific lore reason for using them I'd suggest looking at other options.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

Phoenix Terminators are some of the worst.

If they get the charge, they are great. That is the only situation though. They have no ranged weapon. They are expensive. They need transportation to get somewhere.

I play against EC a lot, and normal cataphractii always perform better then Phoenix Termies.

Ok. Do you have any suggestions for other legions?

As a side note, Sons of Horus Justerian Terminators have 2 wounds. That makes all the difference in my book.

Yes justarian are way better.

Phoenix terminators are probably the worst special terminators in the game right now.

The models are nice but I got some other terminators to with my EC as I see regular terminator squads being better in most situations- no gun plus spear is only marginally better than normal power weapon options.....makes them a big dud as far as rules and game play effectiveness....but again nice models lol

They require setting up: on their own they aren't good unless they charge. But if you have other units tied in combat and Ryllanor? They make breaking the enemy line that much easier.

An extremely situational unit, that is more expensive then units that are better in almost every other situation.

FW really should have made them even better in hand to hand or given the squad some type of ranged wpn option.

Such as more base attacks, or storm bolter/spear combined wpns with the option for a terminator heavy weapon or sonic wpns....

Something...as right now aside from fluff and cool looking there is no reason to play them.

They gave them WS5 with the new book, but that still doesn't justify the point cost. At bare minimum they should have been made the same point cost as a standard termi squad.

If you allying an army simply for hard hitting combat terminators, consider firedrakes?

While they aren't cheap, they are resilient as hell and hit like a truck.
As a salamanders player I rely on them heavily for shock assaults and smashing through lines.
