Subject: The Amityville Horror House Sells For $850,000
|

It went on the market back in June. 850 grand sounds like a steal, considering it's in Long Island (where I'm assuming property values are pretty high).
http://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/%E2%80%98amityville-horror%E2%80%99-house-in-long-island-sells-after-being-listed-for-dollar850000/ar-AAktp2t?OCID=ansmsnnews11
The house,a 1927 Dutch Colonial once known as 112 Ocean Avenue, was finally sold for $850,000. This was the second time since 2010 it was put up for sell (when it sold for $950,000, less than the asking price of $1.13 million).
The house gained local notoriety in 1974 because of the now-infamous DeFeo Murders, where the perp, Ronald DeFeo Jr. claimed that he was "possessed" at the time of the murders. However, Ron Jr. had a history of problems with his overbearing father, a local car dealer with alleged ties with the Five Families in New York City.
The house's international fame came about with the 1977 novel The Amityville Horror, and the 1979 movie based on the book that's now considered a horror classic.
In the years since, the house has been remodeled and the address changed to discourage the curious, and those drawn to the house because of it's fame. The same is true of one of the other houses used in the film's production.
The remodeled house as of 2005:
The house in it's original, famous form. From a 1974 police photo after the DeFeo murders:
The newspaper clipping reporting the murders:
Police photos (safe for work):
First edition of the novel:
The late George and Kathy Lutz, the couple who bought the house with full disclosure (for $80,0000. A steal, even in 1975) a little over a year after the murders. And the people who were involved in the alleged paranormal activity that made the house famous (along with their kids):
The famous movie poster:
I read my mother's first edition copy of the Anson novel (along with Hans Holzer's Murder in Amityville), and first saw the film on cable back in the mid-80's. Even with all the evidence pointing at a hoax, it's still a creepy and interesting piece of American folklore. With that much baggage, I don't think that I would ever buy a house like that, no matter if's a good deal of not.

I'm not sure I could ever knowingly buy a house where someone had died. Even if it was a peaceful, nonviolent, in their sleep kind of death. It would remind me too much of my own mortality.

I wouldn't own it. Though I would not mind at all visiting it.
This house though had nothing on the house and acres that was sold cheap. Former owner was militia nut of some sort and was capable of making IED's

This happened to owners of the Perron house in Rhode Island after The Conjuring hit theaters.
As to the Amittyville house, there's actually probably little to be worried about with it on the supernatural front. As the years have gone on, mounting evidence overwhelmingly suggests the entire story was fiction invented by the Warrens and the Lutz's to make money.
Still wouldn't buy it though. The Amittyville horror might be a paperback full of lies, but Ronald DeFeo Jr. was definitely real, and that's just creepy.

Yeah, my issues would be with the sightseers and the 'eww' factor of knowing terrible murders were committed there.
Really wouldn't sweat the supernatural thing.

You mean as a demonic bed-and-breakfast? It's an interesting idea, although zoning might be an issue.
Probably would want to alter the exterior to something closer to its original appearance.

I know Lizzie Borden's house is now a B&B. I wonder if it turns a profit?

The TV show sequel is fantastic.
Edit: wait, no, I'm confusing this film with The Exorcist.

I don't think ghosts/demons/goblins exist. I have lived in houses where people died (both long ago and in the immediate present). But I don't think I would like to live in a house or apartment where grisly murders took place because I suspect my mind would dwell on it overmuch.
